AIBU to want to wear a real fur hat?

amillionyears · 23/12/2012 14:41

My head often gets cold.
A real fur hat seems old fashioned. And not many people wear them.
Is real fur much warmer than synthetic?

And is there still cruelty of animals in the fur trade?

There is no cruelty in the fur trade now - the animals really enjoy it.

amillionyears · 23/12/2012 14:48

Does that mean there always has and always will be cruelty in the industry?

OP posts:
amillionyears · 23/12/2012 14:49

Do they take the skins off dead animals or live animals?

OP posts:
MacaroniAndWalnut · 23/12/2012 14:52

No, the animals skip about in meadows now, and when summer comes their fur is just unzipped, underneath, on their tummies

amillionyears · 23/12/2012 14:55

I was wanting a bit more of an indepth discussion.
From what you are saying the industry has always been cruel.
I dont know if that is right or wrong. But if it is right, why has fur been worn down through the ages, and people didnt seem to complain?

if they are skinned alive, it seems inexcusably cruel to me. I have a lot of hats which keep my head warm tbh, perhaps they are not very elegant though. Do you want a city hat, something to go with an elegant look?

amillionyears · 23/12/2012 14:56

Thinking about it, the only ones I know about are sheep. And they need to be shorn to keep themselves cool in summer.

amillionyears · 23/12/2012 14:57

I just want a very warm hat.
Synthetic ones dont seem very warm.
I dont know if a real fur hat would be warmer or not.

You can't possibly this ignorant. Just google fur trade if you really want to know.

Otherwise, I stick by the adage, only dumb animals wear fur.

amillionyears · 23/12/2012 14:58

I will google fur trade.

OP posts:
amillionyears · 23/12/2012 15:01

ok. A quick google does not look good.

Are there any furs, apart from sheep that are well done, and warm?

\my mate had a rabbit fur hat. It was very nice.

Waspie · 23/12/2012 15:04

I guess you could rescue a couple of foxes from an illegal hunt. Keep them safe, well fed, happy and secure until the finally die peacefully of old age and then have them skinned and turned into a hat? Otherwise, erm, no.

TeenageWildlife · 23/12/2012 15:04

This one should do the trick: www.zazzle.co.uk/troll_hat-148430124760066924

Salbertina · 23/12/2012 15:05

No.

ZZZenAgain · 23/12/2012 15:05

Don't know about sheepskin hats, believe they are warm like sheepskin jackets and slippers. Obviously the sheep is more than shorn since the skin is used for the leather. They are not to my knowledge farmed for the skins. Presumably after being butchered for meat, the carcass is used further in this way. I am not a fur person, really could not say how much warmer fur is than other materials

amillionyears · 23/12/2012 15:06

Not sure if you are joking MrsMushroom?

OP posts:
amillionyears · 23/12/2012 15:09

Teenage, I have been on MN long enough for people to know who I am.

I did think there must be some furs that were ethical if that is the right word.
Dont seem to be very many.

I never thought sheepskin was that warm tbh. A sheepskin coat always feel a bit uncomfortable.

OP posts:
MrsMushroom · 23/12/2012 15:11

No...it was a nice hat.

amillionyears · 23/12/2012 15:13

Did it smell er rabbitty. Cant say I fancy the idea very much, though thanks for the suggestion.
And was it verry warm do you know?

OP posts:
MrsMushroom · 23/12/2012 15:13

He was a model and a television personality. Not sure if that counts for anything...but ime those types tend to be less sensitive about fur often. Rabbit fur is like leather in a way because we eat rabbits. The fur is harvested in after the bun bun is dead. I wouldn't suggest you wear leopard fur or anything.

There will always be people who go "WHAT!??" when someone says their hat/scarf is rabbit fur...but it's your call.

StickEmWithThePointyEnd · 23/12/2012 15:13

why has fur been worn down through the ages, and people didnt seem to complain?

Well they did complain eventually, and that's why you are having to ask if you would be unreasonable to wear one. (Yes btw imo).

In ye olden days I would presume they had a choice of wear fur to keep warm or die of cold. Nowadays we have central heating.

MrsMushroom · 23/12/2012 15:14

No it didn't smell! It was warm I assume. It was very furry.

AlphasTurkeyLeftoverSpagBol · 23/12/2012 15:18

I just got a thinsulate hat. It's not the prettiest thing ever, but it is the warmest thing ever. And no bunnies were harmed. Win win.

OutragedFromLeeds · 23/12/2012 15:21

How about this?
