AIBU to want to wear a real fur hat?

amillionyears · 23/12/2012 14:41

My head often gets cold.
A real fur hat seems old fashioned. And not many people wear them.
Is real fur much warmer than synthetic?

And is there still cruelty of animals in the fur trade?

I seem to have a circulation problem.
I am either a hot or cold person.
I have central heating up high.
I am wearing a hat as well today, indoors.
I am a bit fed up of my head being almost constantly cold. It gives me headaches.

How about this?
I have a nice sheepskin coat from them which is very warm and lovely.

kilmuir · 23/12/2012 15:25

Some of the animals are anally electrocuted, and some are still alive when they are skinned, rabbits in particular.
i can think of 'kinder' fabrics to put on my head

There is cruelty in fur farming. But equally there is cruelty in farming animals for meat (anyone who says there isn't is deluded imo). I eat meat, and if i had a fur hat i would wear it.

Why don't you get a perm? Or a wig? That would keep your head warm.

amillionyears · 23/12/2012 15:30

Ah thats better.
All those ideas look good. Thank you very much.

The thinsulate looks nice and cheap, and may do the job.

The dog site I will have a better look at. They must collect the hairs in some way? And presumably they are from the hairs of their living dog but collected nicely.

And titans link looks good.
And it doesnt look knitted I dont think. I was hoping to find something that doesnt have holes in for the air to get through iyswim.

OP where are you that you need such super warm head gear?

amillionyears · 23/12/2012 15:48

Outraged, a perm wouldnt be anywhere near warm enough as far as I know.
Dont fancy a wig.

I am in the UK, and not particularly a cold part either.
I know it is me ifyswim, not really the environment around me.

If you eat meat then wear the fur - there's not that much difference is there?

DonaAna · 23/12/2012 16:07

I love fur and come from a culture where people have worn it for thousands of years - and where it gets very cold. I've never seen the difference between meat-eating, leather-wearing and fur-wearing. You have to do all of the above to survive in a cold climate.

A fur hat is lighter and warmer than a faux fur hat.
Mink and fox are the best types (chinchilla and sable of course too if you are very rich).
Rabbit fur is a bit sad - once it gets wet, it looks ratty.

Shearling and astrakhan can be stiff and heavy unless you choose carefully.

Mink is my favorite type - light and warm.

Ive got a very nice fake fur hat from ted Baker, only got it last week so still in the shops.
HAVING said that, Ive got American friend who has a beautiful hat she got in Alaska, she said by buying it she supported local community and yes it is from Fox.

NaokHoHoHo · 23/12/2012 17:40

I have a woolly (well it's probably acrylic) hat that's lined with fleece on the inside. It is not elegant, I look silly, but it's so lovely and warm. You don't need fur to have warm ears.

lljkk · 23/12/2012 17:42

How can OP know AIBU short-hand but be so ignorant as to think wearing fur wouldn't overly controversial on MN?

Statements about skinning alive are 99.9% myth. There's no need, It would be dangerous to the workers, unnecessary cruelty, could easily ruin quality of the fur, etc.

Silk balaclava is the best thing I've found for keeping my head warm, btw. Wear under hat.

mrscrimbobash · 23/12/2012 21:08

I have a general anti-fur stance. But if a rabbit, for instance, was killed to be eaten, it makes sense that it's fur is used as well. Otherwise it's doing a disservice to the animal to waste it.

I am not vegetarian btw.

Likewise, we eats cows, we use their hide for leather- the whole cow is used and so it doesn't seem so frivolous.

mrscrimbobash · 23/12/2012 21:11

FWIW: We were brought up in countryside where wild mink used to eat all the chicks, ducklings and goslings. So we would trap the mink as they are a pest.

There was a milliner who would drive past once or twice a month who used the fur for his hats.

In this case it seems a bit win-win.

Loislane78 · 23/12/2012 21:30

If you don't like synthetic, what about wool - very warm.

Also FYI, sheep don't have 'fur' as such, it's called sheepskin.
