Is my hair too long? With pics!

My Mother (whose opinion I shouldn't care about but do) is on the verge of making a hair appt for me when I go home at Christmas as she hates my long hair and has used the word 'witch' about it in the past Hmm

I haven't been to a hairdresser in well over a year. I love my hair long and hate hairdressers thanks to a history of unwanted dos and a deep fear of layered Mum cuts and sensible bobs. In my defence it is very thick and shiny.

I'm 32. Tell me MN, is my hair too long and do I look like a witch??

Imo I would nip 3 inches off the bottom - but DEFINITELY not cut it off, you look fab (and your baby is suer cute too!:) )

I'd have an inch off but no more.

My hair's very similar to yours.
Mine was at the bottom of my back last year and my dm kept nagging me to get it cut shorter.

She even offered to cut it for me Hmm
I can still remember the wonky 70's fringes so there's no way i'd let her near me with a pair of scissors.

I did get it cut to boob length, but by a proper hairdresser and it was my decision.

I did say 'ps but longer..' Grin

Yes I think layers would help if you like waves - when hair is really long the weight pulls curls out - so cutting a bit off will help it spring up a bit overall. Am frantically trying to find pics of layered hair as long as yours now...

this?

Am not trying to persuade you though, if you're happy as it is, leave it Smile

Oh my. That is gorgeous Xmas Envy

Love the pink tips too.

I'm not completely opposed to a wee cut. I do need to trim a few inches off. I had a stab at the MN haircut earlier this year and I still have a few wonky bits Hmm. Never again!

Will research layers and decide. Thank you for your expert advice Smile

Don't cut it! It is beautiful! I am another one who had to have a bowl haircut as a child and am now compensating by having long hair. Everyone likes it except for my parents who probably want me to go back to the bowl haircut again.

I have almost exactly the same 'do' - colour too - so i think it's lovely Wink . I have recently had it about 3 inches shorter than yours and i also have long layers cut from shoulder length down. the layers don't show when it's all one colour and dried straight, but just make it quicker and easier to wash, dry and style. And when i curl it they ad texture and movement. I also have some ombre highlights in the length so it doesn't look like a block of solid helmet hair.

I have the fringe choppy and layered too because my face is quite round so it doesn't look too severe.

i went to have a fringe trim in liverpool once - one of those salons where everyone has bleached blonde hair, extensions and orange tans. the stylists kept asking me if i wanted highlights or to use the sunbeds. i kept saying no, but they went on and on. Eventually one got quite cross with me and said 'look love, we're just trying to help you look less witchy' Shock i said 'it's ok, where i'm from it's quite normal to hair darker than your face'. you can guess the atmos was quite frosty after that and i didn't get the best haircut!

You're welcome Smile

I think the pink (or purple) tips would suit you actually - and the fact that you have a fringe doesn't mean you couldn't do that style - any half decent hairdresser could just cut a few extra layers in around your face to bring your fringe into the style rather than it just kind of sitting there separately, IYSWIM...

Hahaha Spuddy That is brilliant Grin

Those type of salons put the fear of god in me.

You might be selling me on the low down layers though. My hair is a ballache to wash/dry. Hmmm.

Your hair is fine, I also have long dark hair (bra length) with a fringe but mine is finer so I have layers. I go to the hairdresser about 2-3 times a year for a trim, thats all, and I always go to the same one, she's great, welcomes pics to show what I mean.

I usually take a pic of <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=charlotte+gainsbourg&start=184&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&tbo=d&biw=1366&bih=622&tbm=isch&tbnid=6dEOlN6mEikqyM:&imgrefurl=themusicslut.com/tag/charlotte-gainsbourg/&docid=qDCvrFjgierXlM&imgurl=themusicslut.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/charlotte_gainsbourg.jpg&w=1000&h=750&ei=abfFUPWXL6m00QX3ioDYAQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=1064&vpy=292&dur=1346&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=203&ty=113&sig=107301568348655510993&page=6&tbnh=134&tbnw=183&ndsp=37&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:200,i:7" rel="nofollow noindex" target="_blank">Charlotte Gainsbourg to hairdresser because that the look I'm going for.

I quite like the wig you posted a pic of Blush although its probably a bit Kardashian Grin

it knocks 15 mins off drying time for me (precious time with a 12wk old) and because i have loads of hair, it can dry 'haystack' 'pyramid' shaped without the layers. i use way less conditioner too.

I, too, think your hair is lovely. Really thick and luxurious looking. The heavy fringe really suits you as well.

If you haven't had it cut for over a year it will probably need a good couple of inches trimmed off to get rid of any damaged ends. But those will soon grow back, even with regular trimming, if you want them to.

And gah! Mums eh? I once told mine that I was saving up for a pair of Christian Louboutin heels as a present for myself because I loved the red soles. "And what sort of message do you think that will send out dear?" she said, as if I'd just suggested hanging about on a street corner in thigh high boots and a boob tube for a lark.

Bunny, you fox Xmas Envy

Mothers and hair, there should be a book about this. My mum STILL regularly "offers" to cut my hair. She cut it really short at 11 because it was getting thick and curly and she claimed this would make it less bouffy. Hmm Which is so, so stupid that, well, not to put too fine a point on it, I think she was lying and had an issue with it.

I have quite similar hair to you but curlier and with long layers and have done a tame, terrified version of the MN haircut with success. It just took the slightly raggedy bottom 2 inches off. So that's another advantage of long hair with layers, you can bodge them about yourself.

I agree with rockin i think the style on that pic would be perfect for you. Your hair is of course lovely as it is but it would really be brought to life with those layers. If my hair was like yours that's what i would do anyway :)

I waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant your hair. it looks great, don't chop loads off, trim and style if you want but no more.

indeed witches don't have fringes Smile, or such healthy looking hair....normally straggly, isn't it? I am aiming for a witch style, as long as it is long I do not care (sick of too many years of short hair...)

No it's not too long it's lovely. I had long hair like yours about 6 years ago & over the years coupled with medication & too many trims & colours, my hair got shorter and is now just past my shoulders. I'm desperate for it to be long & thick again but just won't grow past this length. It thinned a lot because of the medication. Could be my age (nearing 40) too. Keep it long you won't regret it!

Your hair is amazing!!!!

Don't cut it, just trim it if it needs it. And tell your mum to mind her own.

HorraceTheChristmasOtter · 11/12/2012 09:34

Mine is longer than yours, so no, I don't think it looks too long! It needs a trim, but that's it. I usually tell the hairdresser firmly that I do not want it layered or styled, just an inch and a half of the bottom please. It's always gone fine so far Xmas Grin

Your hair is gorgeous.

Get a couple of inches off max to trim it!

People pay shitloads for extensions and clip ins to get hair that looks like that!

Don't know what your mother is on about?!
