Is 34 too old to be shopping in New Look and H&M?

As the title says. Went shopping today for some new clothes on a budget. Ended up finding some lovely knitwear in both New Look and H&M. I haven't shopped in either of this places for years. Am now worried that I will look a bit mutton dressed as lamb! Am I too old to shop there?

I hope not. I'm 41 and still shop there!

omletta · 31/10/2012 21:34

Golly I hope not - I do and I'm 41!

omletta · 31/10/2012 21:34

Ha x post Tuttuti

tanfastic · 31/10/2012 21:34

I hope not I live in H&M and I'm 39. I'm
Not ready for BHS just yet!

zillyzilly · 31/10/2012 21:35

Of course not!

littlebird3 · 31/10/2012 21:37

I still shop in h&m and am older than you.

JemimaMuddledUp · 31/10/2012 21:39

Oh good, I'm glad you all think its OK!

I tried Next and everything was a bit too sparkly.

Off to M&S Classics right now Jemima!!

pudding25 · 31/10/2012 22:55

I get most of my clothes in there and am nearly 41. Warehouse and Miss. Selfridge when I have a bit more cash. Why on earth would you be too old?

SomethingOnce · 31/10/2012 23:38

In a word, no.

defineme · 31/10/2012 23:41

It depends-if you go for the freaky on trend stuff yes, but if you go for all the ordinary stuff then no-I get work wear/summer dresses/jeans everything from H&M and I'm old enough to still call it Hennes!

TheFarSide · 31/10/2012 23:43

I am 50 and shop in New Look (don't want to put anyone off or anything).

PerryCombover · 01/11/2012 00:20

Nope. New Look has never been my friend but it's all very changeable now innit

MordionAgenos · 01/11/2012 00:28

I shop in H&M and I'm 45. Their teen skinny jeans are perfect for the small of stature (I'm 5'2" and a size 6-8), also cheap. It's win win basically. I also buy shirts and summery dresses the for work. I didn't pay huge attention to the other shoppers last time I ws in there but I didn't get a sense of being too old.....

lurkingfromhome · 01/11/2012 08:17

I think it's more a question of choosing wisely from every shop rather than shunning or favouring any particular shop altogether. I'm 45 and shop in H&M, but wouldn't go near shorts, teeny-tiny skirts or anything remotely body-con (not that age is a barrier to those either, but my size 14 figure is ...). Likewise, I have one or two things from M&S but wouldn't go near Per Una or the Classic range. Miss Selfridge I don't go near except for the longline ribbed vests, which are fabulous (and 2 for £12). New Look skinny jeans I love but I find some of their stuff a bit too young for me. It's all about picking out the best bits from every shop.

MordionAgenos · 01/11/2012 10:19

I have some fablas M&S men's cardigans and jumpers. People always ask me where I got them when I wear them.

I usually say 'the 80's' because they don't make them like that any more. Grin

JemimaMuddledUp · 01/11/2012 19:14

Thanks all.

Jumpers BTW were this and this in dark grey so hardly OTT trendy Grin

I still shop in H&M and I'm older than you OP. There's always something in there that I like, and can always find things without frills, puffy shoulders, peter pan collars and other fripperies.

EdsRedeemingQualities · 01/11/2012 19:38

It depends on what you actually buy I think.

Yes a lot of the stuff is very teenagery, but I don't really like it anyway - so I go for the more plain, classic stuff like their long sleeved tops and woolly cardis, which are generally lovely.

The womens section downstairs in our H&M is full of nice things for people our age. You just have to mostly ignore the teens bit upstairs.

New look, not so much - but again, they do have the odd nice thing here and there if you can be arsed to wade through the disco stuff.

wasabipeanut · 01/11/2012 19:45

I got a fabulous red, belted mac in H & M a few weeks ago. Had tons of comments on it. I am 40 in Feb!

HotDAMNlifeisgood · 01/11/2012 19:47

I have that mac. I am 33.

SoulTrain · 01/11/2012 19:49

Yes. Get out. You're turning my stomach.

My Mum buys their cardigans and wide leg trews and she's 63. So I think you're good to go. Grin

BlingBubbles · 01/11/2012 19:49

Oh no, I am 32 and do most of my shopping in new look and h&m.

wasabipeanut · 01/11/2012 19:54

Not just me that can't resist a red coat then? ;)

Graciescotland · 01/11/2012 19:56

I've never been a fan of new look but H&M is great (33)
