What are your 'wear forever' items of clothing?

I am quite a 'fast fashion' type of girl, rather than always going for timeless classics and I get bored of clothes quite quickly. However, today I put on my favourite ever cardigan that I bought absolutely years ago from Warehouse and realised that I will NEVER get rid of it! It is a grey knit cardi, kind of a longline shape but not baggy. It used to have black buttons but they have all come off (although the button holes are so small, you cant tell it once had buttons), the wrists are starting to look a bit frayed and there is a small hole in the armpit, but I still think it looks great! It is a very flattering shape despite me being a bit fatter than when I bought it and it goes with everything. I love it!

Other things I have had for years and have no intention of ever throwing out are:
A denim mini skirt from topshop
Another cardigan from primark - grey and black striped, although not quite as nice as the grey one!
A purple t-shirt with a sort of 3d satin bow on it (sounds gross, but isnt!) from new look - really great quality t shirt, although it has got deodorant marks on it that wont come out now
Martha jeans (although I guess once these get the inevitable hole in the crotch I will have to get rid).
A purple pea coat from Asda
I totally love my 'just sheepskin' uggs as well, but after 6 winters they have holes in so I have just got some new Ugg Australia ones that I am hoping will last as long - I know uggs are not really the mumsnet way, but I really like them!

Funnily enough all the items that I have spent loads of money on I have got bored of or have worn out quite quickly!

What clothes will you wear forever?

I am hoping all my cashmere jumpers will last forever.

I have a black jumper dress with white fair isle stitching across the shoulders from People Tree that I have worn every winter for the last few years and hope it will last for ages as it's really heavy wool.

I have some sheepskin boots that my grandma bought in Germany in the 70s that are still going...

I have a navy peacoat that I adore and should last for decades but is really quite snug, so hoping I don't get any fatter.

  • Brora cashmere dress
  • inhabit cashmere sweater (too fine to last forever, but I will wear it till it falls apart)
  • J Brand Agnes
  • M&S waterfall cardigan Blush Blush
  • Splendid racer back vests (I replace them with identical ones when they wear out every couple of years from over use. Can't find any others long enough)
  • Leather leggings that I haven't bought he but I know I will wear for the rest of time when I finally do Grin
MarshaBrady · 04/10/2012 15:36

I'll probably introduce other things so keeping them so long isn't too onerous.
But

Stella M green coat
Lanvin black wedges
Marant black heels

I'll wear for as long as they last.

Eliza22 · 04/10/2012 15:37

Jersey dresses. Some plain, some patterned and accompanied by 3/4 sleeve cardies. I couldn't manage without them with my opaque tights.

cocolepew · 04/10/2012 15:38

I have a black leather jacket that I've worn so much it's going white in places. It's not a biker one but a short zip up one.

A grey cadigan from M&S.

A dark purplish cardi from River Island. It has dark purple velvet down the front and beady bits. Its a bit small now, (obviously it shrunk Wink) but I wear it if I need to look a bit smartish.

A black and white stripey top.

HazleNutt · 04/10/2012 15:44

I have a pair of DKNY boots that have high heels and look elegant, go well with a work suit, but are actually made of rubber. Brilliant for rain and snow, totally waterproof. I think I've had them for at least 5-6 years now and hope to get a good few more years out of them.

Doshusallie · 04/10/2012 15:47

Really warm but smart Reversible black waterproof/furry hooded coat from M&S in Amsterdam about 15 years ago, Windsmoor black wool and cashmere three-quarter length coat, navy trench from Monsoon both bought about six years ago. Also various wool and cashmere pashmina size scarves, long grey cashmere cardi from TKMX. Dark brown zip up boots bought on hols in Italy years ago still in great nick. Various classic linen shorts/sundresses for hols. Makes me happy just thinking about them!

Benetton - mens boiled wool, boxy cardi with leather buttons

I was 16 and it was the first thing I'd ever got on Oxford Street.

I am now 42 ! and it still looks amazing (worn with a little vest). Shows of a bit of skin, highlights a great tan, looks sexy in a nice way and is lovely and warm.

xxx Thank you for being a friend cardi Thanks

germyrabbit · 04/10/2012 21:58

ooh nice thread!

really sloughy american apparel sweat shirts, levi 501s, fitted jackets, small heeled laced boots

MarshaBrady · 04/10/2012 22:02

I realised in the park I hadn't said small Celine bag. And felt bad for it.

So Celine bag.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/10/2012 22:05

I've forgotten a couple too:

  • little Gucci handbag of tan leather and pink suede
  • tan leather Hobbs bag
  • big black leather tote from Clarks
  • black silk and cotton mix jumper from Hobbs
  • cropped trench coat from M&S Autograph
AmberNectarine · 04/10/2012 22:16

Marsha, how can you forget that divine Celine? [slaps wrist]

My Mulberry collection
AH mini Gracie
Dior vintage pink snakeskin evening bag
Neon pink Raoul bag

So, all my bags, basically...

My pink Louboutins would have been here too, but the cobblers ruined them. Happily they are sending me a cheque so I will be replacing with a shiny new pair.

Clothes-wise, my IRO jacket, though a v recent purchase will go the distance, my Alexander Wang muscle Ts will be replaced when they fade away, Goldsign jeans which are amazing, McQueen silk scarves, Acne Pistols and two tops from Maje with leopards on, identical but in different colour ways.

RSVPentathlon · 04/10/2012 22:22

A long brown leather jacket from Benetton.
I bought it with my first salary in 2000.
I still wear it several times a month.

MarshaBrady · 04/10/2012 22:24

I know Amber! I actually felt a wee bit if heart ache for it for leaving it out.

It was like being asked to choose my dc's favourite teddies to keep. I'd be argh no don't forget the cat one etc.

How exciting re cheque for new ones (and little pat for old).

cloutiedumpling · 04/10/2012 22:26

A black cardigan from Warehouse purchased about 15 years ago. It has a crew neck, is slightly cropped and still looks great despite being washed several times a month. I've had to stich up the seams every now and then but apart from that it is fine.

peacefuleasyfeeling · 04/10/2012 22:36

Too many pairs of Pied A Terre taaaall boots :)
