The Worst perfume ever!

anniewoo · 28/09/2012 19:54

Was in HOF today and as i have no money at the moment to spend (despite their sale) decided to cheer myself up with a spray ( or two) of their posh perfumes. Big Mistake- sprayed Serge lutyens Tuberose Criminale- and it was!!!! Well the smell was criminal- like camphor, moth balls mixed with wintergreen , that awful muscle rub stuff. Jesus wept and it lasts and lasts and lasts. Can't kill it off, despite Annick Goutal Ninfeo Mio on my other wrist. You have been warned.....Though i do dare you!!!

I'm trying Fracas today, and not liking it at all so far, but I'm persisting. Slightly nauseating at the moment, like sticking your nose deep into some sort of tropical flower.

kiwigirl42 · 03/11/2012 12:39

Haberdashery get a sample of Lipstick Rose (Frederic Malle) from Les Senteurs - its the best rose - violet, make up smell I've ever tried.

kiwigirl42 · 03/11/2012 12:41

Cointreau Fracas doesn't do it for me either. I prefer Tubereuse Criminelle (named as worst perfume ever by OP lol). I tried a lot of tubereuse samples before trying TC - one sniff and I bought a whole bell jar I loved it so much.

coffeeinbed · 03/11/2012 12:59

I love Fracas.
Haven't worn it in years.
Have a bottle stashed away - bought in a sale years ago, not even opened.
Makes me happy knowing it's there, waiting when I'm ready for it again.

Currently wearing Eau du Fier.
Might as well, before it turns bad and breaks my heart.

mignonette · 03/11/2012 14:46

Prada Tuberose is lovely.

shoeprincess2 · 03/11/2012 14:57

coffeeinbed- I ordered an Annick Goutal sample, based on your suggestion. I am currently wearing "Songes". It smells like a more wearable and slightly powdery version of Fracas. I can only tolerate Fracas after about 4 hours, once it has faded. Awaiting samples of Ambre Sultan and Portrait of a Lady (and kicking myself about dithering about Lipstick Rose and not ordering it). Oh well, there's always my next LesSenteurs order Smile.

GingerLemonTea · 03/11/2012 15:00

Received all my samples. So far have tried L'Air du Desert Marocain by Tauer. Really like it. I think it's similar to Penhaligons Elixir which I love. Nice for winter. I have Tom Ford Tuscan Leather on today. I don't like it. Not sure what I was expecting but although I like a lot of masculine scents this is not for me.

coffeeinbed · 03/11/2012 16:52

What did you get Shoeprinces?
let me know how you like it.

shoeprincess2 · 03/11/2012 16:57

Coffeeinbed- It is the one called "Songes"- an oriental floral. It has settled to a very powdery finish, not too dissimilar to Cartier's Baiser Vole. I really like it and can't stop sniffing my wrist. I am now wanting to test more Annick Goutal's fragrances. Any that you recommend? I am thinking about Grand Amour and Heure and Heure Exquise. Have you tried them?

shoeprincess2 · 03/11/2012 17:00

*Grand Amour and Heure Exquise. I have a sleeping baby on my lap...

coffeeinbed · 03/11/2012 17:05

The one you're wearing?
Sorry, of course!
I have tried them, but not sure I can remember anything coherent now.
I did like Eau du Ciel which is very pretty, soft floral.
I also liked Le Jasmin - a green jasmin.
I went though a bottle of Ce Soit ou Jamais - a big rose, but don;t think that's something I'll ever wear again.

SorrelForbes · 03/11/2012 17:39

Trying out my sample of 1740 Marquis de Sade which arrived this morning. So far, I love it. It reminds me of the inside of a packet of Silk Cut!

anniewoo · 03/11/2012 21:29

Ninfeo mio- anick goutal

Anàis anàis boak Sad

Haberdashery · 03/11/2012 22:34

I love Eau Sauvage, DonaAna.

I also love Anais Anais, FTR. It's considered to be quite a classy perfume these days, especially considering the market it was aimed it. Also, you have the accents all wrong there!

Lipstick Rose is totally on the list, Kiwi. Thanks!

CointreauVersial · 03/11/2012 22:59

Fracas didn't get any better - I finally worked out it was the lilac, one of my least favourite smells. Ah well, can't win 'em all.

DonaAna · 04/11/2012 10:00

Moomin you seem to like quite fresh scents but also have a warmer, softer side (I used to wear Dune too and it's a curious cold-warm mixture).

What you already have found sounds great (and briefly check the entire Exclusifs range - also Bel Respiro and Eau de Cologne). If I were you, I'd try to find a Hermes boutique and try on Hermessences. Most of them are sheer, light, crisp and elegant, and you might find new favorites there. Also try the Hermes Jardins series (department stores) plus them many variants of Eau des Merveilles (I've been playing with the latest release. On me, it's very light, sheer and its taffy-like mixture of sweet and saltay). And Ambre Narguile is a velvety, foody but still stylish gourmand.

In the eyes of perfume fans, most new Armanis, Guccis and D&G:s are "muzak" perfumes, ie, very generic and not very ambitious.

People who like Coromandel may or may not like Angel EdT, A*men, the new Lancome La vie est belle, and other chocolatey gourmands. Worth a try anyway.

If you want to be a bit adventurous, order the sample set from Olfactive Studio. They might appeal to you. Many other modern niche brands - Byredo for example - may have things that interest you.

Oh and Coco (EdP) is almost painfully strong. I love it but feel it's too overwhelming around other people - I've often wondered whether I should dilute my bottle by adding a bit of vodka Wink Coco makes me vince from pain and bursts my eardrums, but Bal a Versailles (extrait de parfum) is a perfect fit for me - the fragrant equivalent of a couture ballgown, fits me exactly.

Oh and just a random other thing. I've been enjoying a new Tauer sample set over the past days. Anyone who really likes violets should try Pentachord White - a really modern take on violet, nothing even remotely old-ladyish about it (I'm not a fan of violets - they are usually far too twee on me - but I like this). I'm also in love with the very limited distribution Lys du Desert - a heady take on classics, for some reason it reminds me of Tabac Blond. May need to order a full bottle from the US and pay the import duties.

What perfume are y'all wearing today?

shoeprincess2 · 04/11/2012 10:16

Balenciaga today and I have decided that I have a love/hate relationship with violets! As well as this one, I also have Agent Provocateur Maitresse and I often find the violet fragrance a bit too much. It's not too bad at the moment, but I must admit, I can't wait to use up these perfumes. I know what you mean DonaAna about violets smelling a bit old ladyish. I might nip into my local Boots today and have a squirt of Chanel no 19. I expecte to receive my lessenteurs order this week. Can't wait Smile.

YouOldSlag · 04/11/2012 10:40

I am wearing Jesus del Pozo Ambar- gorgeous oranges and cardoman.

MooMinCow · 04/11/2012 12:59

Thanks DonaAna. Will check out the Hermes ones, next time I'm at John Lewis. I ordered Coromandel, Cuir de Russie, Bois de Illes, Sycomore, 31 Rue Cambon and No5 Eau Premiere and the Diptyque 34 so will wait for them to arrive and report back. I used to wear Angel in my early twenties, but dislike it now and anything too sweet or foody.

I have Coco in EDP - do you think the EDT is less erm potent? I loved CK Obsession too, but a friend of mine used to drown herself in it and it would leave me gasping for air if we were in a confined space! What is the best way to tone down and wear such strong scents? I always spray 2 small pumps on my neck pulse points - I've heard people spraying in air then walking through a mist or spraying on hair Confused.

Am currently wearing Eau De Public Swimming Pool Grin Bloody chlorine stench clings like anything!

DonaAna · 04/11/2012 13:10

Shoe you should definitely try Pentachord White - it's a non-twee violet.

All, when you learn to know perfumes better, you usually find many categories you really like.

I went shopping and did a quick side-by-side of Angel EdT and La vie est belle. Angel is edgier and classier (at least in the opening), but I can smell LVEB on one of my cashmere scarves and actually quite like it. For me, it would be the equivalent of gray sweatpants, comfy and easy-to-wear - not groudbreaking nor superstylish.

Chanel No. 19 is a seriously chic perfume, one of my favorites.

shoeprincess2 · 04/11/2012 13:57

So, I tried Chanel no 19 EdT on one hand and the EdP on the other. I like them both, but the EdT edges it. I looked for a tester of the no 19 poudre but there wasn't one. Would have liked to have tried that too. Pentachord White is added to my list as another one to test. I'll have a bit of a google this afternoon whilst DP watches the Grand Prix and the boys are sleeping! Thanks DonaAna

Anyone used this site?

DonaAna · 04/11/2012 14:08

I haven't but they have a good reputation. Order from them!

Anyone who loves tuberosa, Scent & Sensibility also carry Loretta, Tauer's tube that I am addicted to.
