Was in HOF today and as i have no money at the moment to spend (despite their sale) decided to cheer myself up with a spray ( or two) of their posh perfumes. Big Mistake- sprayed Serge lutyens Tuberose Criminale- and it was!!!! Well the smell was criminal- like camphor, moth balls mixed with wintergreen , that awful muscle rub stuff. Jesus wept and it lasts and lasts and lasts. Can't kill it off, despite Annick Goutal Ninfeo Mio on my other wrist. You have been warned.....Though i do dare you!!!

Oh and the shame..... Wild Musk.

I should make an attempt to describe Diptyque Philosykos.

It's warm and figgy and makes me think of Greek summer evenings. It doesn't smell synthetic in any way.

Am finding it hard to remove nose from wrist.

kiwigirl42 · 31/10/2012 11:11

ooh squoosh that sounds delicious! can't wait for my samples to arrive now. another smell I really love is good old Fenjal - cheap as chips but I love it!

mignonette · 31/10/2012 11:33

I still love Jovan Musk and Eau Jeune (French pharmacy range) from my teenage years although I always sneaked a spray of my Mothers Diorissimo, 'O' De Lancome (still wear) and Vol De Nuit....

Badvoc · 31/10/2012 12:38

Oh hello! I found you again!
Well doña ana, you will be disappointed in me but I have asked for mine cashmere by next for Xmas.
I like it and it is musky and powdery and nice.
It was either the or cinnabar and I think dh would back at the price of that! :)
Does anyone know if you can still get Roma by Laura biagliotti? Used to love that!

mignonette · 31/10/2012 12:42

I'm after some 'Skin Scent New West for Her'. Lovely ozonic scent.

Anyone tried Alliage? I'm intrigued.

Haberdashery · 31/10/2012 22:51

Oh, sorry. Aliage. But actually I'm reading something now that says it's v sandalwoody which I wouldn't like at all.

Themilkybarisonme · 01/11/2012 08:56

I have read and loved 35 pages of this perfume talk! I rarely wear any because I often find them overwhelming. Having said that, I was p pl

Themilkybarisonme · 01/11/2012 09:19

Ooh, baby intervention. Sorry.

Having said that, the last perfume I bought was Hermes' 24 Faubourg. That was before my wedding, when I was 22, and I'm 30 now! But I spent a long time choosing it and it's still really what I like. Does anyone have any recommendations of other things I might like? It's the complexity of the smell I like so much, if that makes any sense. I don't like too much sweetness, but florals can be fine.
Because I'm a bit hesitant about perfumes, the scents I come across are not perfumes... I like the smell of Redken smooth down shampoo. From my childhood I like the smell of Radox alpine Blush I wore Clarins Eau Resourçante through a tough time so I have positive memories of that.
I like the smell of rain, but not wet dog. I like dettol wipes in lime Grin I like wax and old coffee and the polish they put on wood floors. I really like really strong lavender and have that about near lemon things.

I have loved reading this. I think there's something to be said for putting it in classics just so people who weren't thinking about perfume chance upon it.

kiwigirl42 · 01/11/2012 09:31

Hermes' 24 Faubourg is supposed to be a really well made classic so you've obviously got good taste!
Have a browse over at www.surrendertochance.com or www.luckyscent.com where you can look at the descriptions and order samples to be sent to the UK.
always always get samples to try before committing to a full bottle unless its cheap!

heres a link to some clean fresh perfumes to get you started

kiwigirl42 · 01/11/2012 09:34

Haberdashery there is a good review of Aliage here

Haberdashery · 01/11/2012 11:41

Thanks, Kiwi. Definitely one for the list, I think.

Super busy at work and travelling (I have a very limited number of perfumes with me, maybe 10... ahem) , but Milky 24 Faubourg is fabulous, a great classic.

You seem to like elegant classic bouquets. Your stance on aldehydes (what you smell when you smell Chanel No 5) decides whether classic flower bouquets are your thing or whether you already wear one of the best perfumes of its kind.

I'm currently wearing Incense Rose by Tauer Perfumes. If anyone likes cool incense, this is great.

I tried La vie est belle yesterday at the airport. Nice and pleasant but quite unoriginal, Angel-like, but perhaps more refined and muted. I was looking forward to an interesting iris-leather (Cuir de Russie is an interesting iris-leather9 but no, it was an okay light gourmand but nothing very special.

YouOldSlag · 01/11/2012 16:24

DonaAna- I agree about La via est Belle. To me it smelt like I'd spilt Ribena on my arm then rubbed a melted Caramac bar over the top.

anniewoo · 01/11/2012 18:44

Dona Any other perfume i might like based on my list. Seeing as i started this thread Grin

Themilkybarisonme · 01/11/2012 19:08

Ooh, get me! Really? Wow. Can't believe it! Grin

I have no knowledge of anything in this line, just dislike almost everything I smell in shops but was determined to have a perfume, so sniffed everything I could find for ages...

I've never smelt Chanel no5, as far as I know. I'll see if I can when I'm in Manchester next. I really disliked Chanel Mademoiselle, is that similar at all? I was given a sample when buying moisturiser years ago. (That was before a friend at P&G told me it had nothing in it to merit the price tag, and I moved on to Eve Lom TLC cream which is beautifully rosy, but that's by the by).
Thank you!

Themilkybarisonme · 01/11/2012 19:08

And thank you so much kiwi! I was reading back from the end - will look at those links now :)

mignonette · 02/11/2012 10:11

If you like coffee why not send for a sample of Jo Malone's 'Black Vetyver Cafe' cologne?

Haberdashery · 02/11/2012 22:23

I was wandering through a department store earlier and tried some of the Acqua di Parma colognes. I love the original one and have a bottle as a splash it on and forget about it scent (I also put it on my six year old when she wants perfume as I think it's fresh and ephemeral enough not to be OTT for a kid). Was hoping to like the almond one (Mandorlo di Sicilia) but found it far too sweet although I love almonds generally. There was a horrible caramelly undertone which made me feel a bit sick - was more like amaretto than actual almonds. I really loved Fico di Amalfi on first spray - a fruity green scent and of course I adore figs in all their manifestations - but it faded to literally nothing after a few minutes. It would be a good scent to spritz liberally or chuck in one's bath in the manner of eau de cologne but far too pricey for that at fifty quid for a not particularly large bottle.

I love classic eau de cologne generally but it's a shame it doesn't last. I suppose it's all such light airy notes that it can't. What would anyone suggest for a longer-lasting version of a similar scent?

One thing I tried that I wasn't necessarily expecting to like but did was Tom Ford Violet Blonde. It's a more mature and deep and sweet scent than I generally like but had a freshness and flower sweetness that made it more appealing than other musky scents to me. It smelt a bit like my mum's makeup bag from when I was small (in a good way). I also liked Tom Ford Grey Vetiver which had an appealing cold element to it that I was really intrigued by. I don't know what note that is but it was interesting, almost metallic. It was something I sniffed and recoiled a bit because it wasn't what I was expecting at all but I went back for a second and third sniff and decided I loved it. I am considering an actual purchase of that or the Violet Blonde one.

Chanel No 19 Poudré is lovely. I hadn't previously tried it because the Poudré put me off. I intensely dislike what I think of as powdery smells. But this isn't at all powdery or perhaps what I think of as powdery is another thing entirely. But it's fresh and even the end of it is actually citrussy and bright enough not to put me off. Another possible purchase.

DonaAna · 03/11/2012 06:58

Haberdashery colognes are made to refresh, short duration is their general characteristic. Natural citrus essences evaporate very quickly unless they are manipulated chemically.
Neroli Portofino by Tom Ford is a longer-lasting cologne, expensive but worth trying. Any cologne fan needs to try Eau Sauvage EdT (Dior, men's department).
Grey Vetiver is great and very sexy on a woman. So is Eau Noire (men's version) by Lalique.

MooMinCow · 03/11/2012 08:22

DonaAna some help please?

I'm a very seasonal perfume wearer. I love Issey Miyake L'eau or A Scent Florale, Dior Dune, Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche, Prada Infusion D'Iris and Infusion Neroli in Spring/Summer. Autumn and Winter I want warm, spicy smells like Coco Chanel or the original Prada but find them a bit overwhelming for daytime. I have been using Gucci by Gucci and Armani She/Elle (the one in the champagne colour metal cylinder) which are ok but feel a bit generic. I also have Chanel No5 and Allure which I wear occasionally too.

I sniffed Chanel Coromandel last week which I liked. it reminded me a lot of an Indian Bakul attar my mum used to wear (excuse the slight tree hugger description I've linked to Grin). I was also drawn to Diptyque's 34 Blvd St Germain. I have ordered samples from StoC of these 2 plus a few more of the Chanel Exclusifs.

Are there any other brands I should be trying? thanks
