Ok, where is the brilliant 'Warm and waterproof coat' thread from last year? I need another one.

I bought an amazing coat by Didriksons last year on the advice of a MNetter here who worked in the industry. She gave the BEST advice but I can't find the thread now. Basically she explained how warm AND waterproof is a hard combination to come by because we're the only country with such a wet and cold climate and no one designs for us. Nice.

I bought the coat for DS but ended up wearing it myself, now I need to buy him one of his own before he gets soaked to the skin!

I've had a Squall Parka from Lands End for around five years now in navy. I wear it a lot in the winter as we have four dogs and wore it on Sunday to watch DH running in a 10K race in torrential rain and howling gale. I was snug, dry and toasty warm inside my coat. The coat still looks like new in spite of being regularly washed, thrown in the boot of the car, used as a cushion by dogs etc. It is not particularly stylish but since I'm not either that isn't a problem - however it is beautifully functional and in terms of cost per wear has been excellent value. I wear a lot of LE fleece/jackets etc. and find their quality on these sorts of garments is generally excellent.

I've just ordered this one

I too am a dog walker and need something light and rainproof, warm and rainproof and sometimes just warm. This one seems to be as close to a portable duvet as I can find fit the bill nicely.

It is expensive, but still cheaper than buying 3 separate coats.

I have just bought the Barbour parka - it is arriving tomorrow so I hope I love it as much as I think I will!

I've already got a Berghaus showerproof jacket, and a Craghopper waterproof jacket and have got loads of wear from them, but they are not very warm for standing in the school playground!

CakeMeIAmYours · 26/09/2012 16:57

Oooh, which one did you get alibaba?

This was a close runner up for me

noyouhavehadawee · 26/09/2012 17:11

oooo i live that aiglee it looks snug as a bug, nt for me at that prce mind Sad

anchovies · 26/09/2012 17:11

Ive got a www.vikingkids.co.uk/didriksons/AW11-Desiree-ladies-parka.htm didriksons desiree and an insultated merrell wakefield. Have also tried lots of other didriksons coats.

My favourite is definitely the desiree, it is completely waterproof and extremely warm. It looks like a parka and the material is really matt so doesn't look at all like a waterproof. I am an apple shaped size 16 and the shape is flattering on me.

TeddyBare · 26/09/2012 17:22

Is it really true that the UK is wetter and colder than everywhere else?
I think I might be in love with the Didriksons Stella Parka it looks so warm and cozy. Unfortunately the only places which seem to sell it online are in German and it will work out something like £300 with shipping. Anyone seen it for sale in the UK for cheaper than that?

accessorieshelp · 26/09/2012 17:25

loving the aigle too but not waterproof

Noseynoonoo · 26/09/2012 17:35

I bought a black Merrell Isadore last year to cope with the school drop-off/collection. I cannot praise it enough. I worried that it would look like a sleeping bag. In reality, because it has an internal drawstring waist it fits really nicely and I had a lot of positive comments about it. I rarely, if ever, felt cold when I was outside last winter.

I think it comes in 5 or so colours and I did shop around to get a good price.

Noseynoonoo · 26/09/2012 17:36

And it's quite long too!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/09/2012 17:39

I love my merrell haven but watch the sizing, I am very skinny but a bit large of nork and the small one is very tight snug around the boobage area.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 26/09/2012 17:46

Kitten I find Merrell sizing quite small across the board. I adore their shoes, and have boots for winter plus walking trainers and walking sandals. I take a half or full size bigger in Merrell than I do in anything else.

I am longing for this barbour sigh

MarysBeard · 26/09/2012 18:46

The Merrell is lovely. I must admit when it rains I just bung on a thin anorak, or if it's v cold as well, a sailing type jacket with a fleece zipped in.

I have a short duvet coat (goose down) for cold dry days. It's toasty.

minipie · 26/09/2012 19:13

So glad I found this thread!

Please can anyone advise me? I need a warm waterproof coat for pram pushing (expecting DC1 in December).

The main thing is I need it to be warm as I feel the cold v easily. Showerproof rather than fully waterproof is ok (no dog, live in London).

I am short (5'3) and petite. Size 8, hourglassy (small waist and crap legs), tiny shoulders, medium boobs.

I'm trying to decide between:

Merrell Wakefield
Didriksons Naomi
North Face Arctic Parka (but a lot more ££ than the others)
this one from Decathlon (v cheap)

Any views on how these fit a small person? Any views on the cheaper Decathlon option (how warm is it?) How warm are the Wakefield and Naomi...?

Is the Ellenwood insulated?

Where can you buy the Didriksons stuff.

AWimbaWay · 26/09/2012 19:58

This welligogs wax coat is a gorgeous flattering fit, I was so close to buying it after trying it on but it doesn't have a hood, I need a hood. It actually looks far nicer in rl than in the photos too. I'm still not sold on anything I've seen and I must have looked at over 1000 online today!

LivingInAGoldBubble · 26/09/2012 19:58

I am not remotely stylish but the best coat I have to keep warm and dry is a ski/outdoor jacket. Worth a look maybe?

Lozislovely · 26/09/2012 19:59

Nelly - I ordered the ellenwood y'day and from what I can tell it only comes in an insulated version.

I wanted a coat that would look smart enough for work and casual enough for weekends so I hope I've made the right decision!!!!

AWimbaWay · 26/09/2012 20:02

fridgepants ilse jacobsen does some brightly coloured ones.

MorrisZapp · 26/09/2012 20:45

Anchovies, tell us more about the desiree? Is it fully lined/ padded?

Are the pockets deep and warm?

Is the hood soft on the inside?

Also, how long is it on you?

Thanks!
