Ok, where is the brilliant 'Warm and waterproof coat' thread from last year? I need another one.

I bought an amazing coat by Didriksons last year on the advice of a MNetter here who worked in the industry. She gave the BEST advice but I can't find the thread now. Basically she explained how warm AND waterproof is a hard combination to come by because we're the only country with such a wet and cold climate and no one designs for us. Nice.

I bought the coat for DS but ended up wearing it myself, now I need to buy him one of his own before he gets soaked to the skin!

Loz thanks. By insulated do you mean would be thick enough for freezing days? Also how is the sizing?

Flisspaps · 26/09/2012 20:52

None of these are what I'm after :(

I want something that looks like a trench coat or a mac, but is waterproof (and preferably warm). I don't want a sports/walking/hiking coat.

BrianButterfield · 26/09/2012 20:56

My Haven arrived today and I can vouch for it being on the small side, size-wise, but uber, uber warm. I wore it out because I had to wear it, and ended up in Tesco, sweating half to death. But it was hardly cold at all here! It does say on the label that it's waterproof so I'm actually looking forward to putting it to the test, and it's the perfect length for 5'4" me. I also think it looks great, really fitted and smart and not like a padded jacket at all.

Lozislovely · 26/09/2012 21:01

Nelly - not sure tbh as it hasn't arrived yet but from reviews of the Wakefield it 'should' be über warm!! It should arrive tomorrow so I'll let you know

Ordered the large as I'm a 12/14 and hoping it has enough room for a jumper underneath without making me look like an Oompa Loompa !!!!

busyboysmum · 26/09/2012 21:06

I saw one of the mums at school wearing this trench coat in white and looking mighty smart in it.

Also quite like this trench coat

earlyriser · 26/09/2012 21:29

Just a word of caution, i got my Merrell Wakefield (uninsulated) about 18 months ago, and it now leaks at the shoulders. Gutted as it really was a stylish waterproof.

StrawberryMonkey · 26/09/2012 21:30

The "Janelle" coats here www.seasaltcornwall.co.uk/women/clothing/jackets_outerwear
Are fab. Guaranteed waterproof (they really work) and breathable and very comfortable too. They have popper tabs to cinch in the waist a bit. The cut is flattering and they are knee length. With wellies you stay dry. No need for waterproof trousers!

AWimbaWay · 26/09/2012 21:32

aigle trench coat

newbrunette · 26/09/2012 21:53

I bought Merrell Quinley last year and it's super warm and so far waterproof. I like it as it's quite fitted at the waist (you can adjust with internal drawstring) and also because it's not as shiny and "puffy" as some insluated coats. And it's got detachable fur round the hood.

HolyAutumnGoldBatman · 26/09/2012 22:21

brian where did you get your Haven from, I'm looking round for a good deal. What colour did you get? I'm thinking of getting the grey/charcoal.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 26/09/2012 22:25

Inspired by this thread, I've just ordered a charcoal Haven from here HolyAutumn

I can also reliably inform those of you that were looking for a Merrell Ellenwood (the rebranded Wakefield) you that Sports-Direct / Trek and Field have just taken delivery of shed loads of them (or, at least, the shop near me has)

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 26/09/2012 22:26

Oh, just realised it's called 'granite' not charcoal on that site.

LadyMetroland · 26/09/2012 22:54

I've got a Jack Wolfskin coat. Very warm and very waterproof. They do a huge range. Defo worth looking at their website (cost £££ but reckon its worth it if you're planning to wear for several years)

I bought mine because its a priority for me to have a MASSIVE hood. Average hoods just get blown off your head, and fringe gets wet while pushing pushchair.

FarrowAndBollock · 26/09/2012 23:16

It was definitely drowninginlaundry. I have name changed since then, but she was really helpful

cabbageandbeans · 26/09/2012 23:41

Is this what everyone is talking about? www.merrell.com/UK/en/Women-Clothing-Jackets-Coats

I am just joining this discussion for the first time and have never heard of the Merrell coat before! I can't understand why everyone is saying it has changed it's name when the company website (if I am on the right company website!) shows it as a wakefield still. Totally confused..........

Tiddlyompompom · 26/09/2012 23:42

Thank you so much for this thread!
I've now set my heart on a Didriksons Rebecca Parka, but can't find one in stock ANYWHERE! Can anyone please point me in the right direction, or is it a lost cause? (I'm after a 38 or 40, pref in the Dark Green)
I'm not keen on the Celeste or Lindsey versions as they're rather shiny. Sad

cabbageandbeans · 27/09/2012 00:07

Love this Anchovies www.vikingkids.co.uk/didriksons/AW11-Desiree-ladies-parka.htm but when I go direct to the didriksons website I can find it???!!! Of course I am very thankful for you link.

Also love the sea salt recommendation lovely long coat to the knees - my cup of tea........how I detest wet 'rained on' thighs (despite having worn wellies and a waterproof!) www.seasaltcornwall.co.uk/women/clothing/jackets_outerwear/janelle_coat_cormorant.htm

Still a bit mystified by the Merrell and what it's actual name is! but I like the one I see called Wakefield.

TellMeLater · 27/09/2012 06:13

I have the North Face Arctic Parka - it's fantastic, very warm on cold days but oddly also very comfortable on not so cold days. Totally waterproof too. Downside is the price, given it's not high fashion I'm hoping to get 10 years wear from it though.

TinyPenguin · 27/09/2012 07:24

any kind of ski jacket should do the job!

AgathaFusty · 27/09/2012 08:46

That depends Tiny on whether people have a certain 'look' in mind (like a parka). Ski jackets are also not very long, so the taller people among us might want something longer than a ski jacket.

C4ro · 27/09/2012 09:46

Oh snap! I got a Died. Rebecca last year and can confirm they are toasty warm and waterproof. It got down to -17 degrees here in Austria and it was no problem whatsoever.

I have a ridiculously long armspan for my height (I'm 170cm tall, 182 cm armspan) and I don't get cold wrists with the nice cuffs. They do size up a bit big but I think it depends on what you expect to wear underneath.

PoisonMountain · 27/09/2012 10:03

Arcteryx. If you have a house to mortgage...

wishiwasonholiday · 27/09/2012 10:10

Wish I didn't open this thread, just fell in love with the didriksons Veronica in shadow and ended up ordering.
