Ok, where is the brilliant 'Warm and waterproof coat' thread from last year? I need another one.

I bought an amazing coat by Didriksons last year on the advice of a MNetter here who worked in the industry. She gave the BEST advice but I can't find the thread now. Basically she explained how warm AND waterproof is a hard combination to come by because we're the only country with such a wet and cold climate and no one designs for us. Nice.

I bought the coat for DS but ended up wearing it myself, now I need to buy him one of his own before he gets soaked to the skin!

Probably a good cheap waterproof from Tresspass or Regetta with a fleece underneath would do the job. Climbers and walkers always layer to keep warm

PebblePots · 03/10/2012 03:39

Yes it looks seriously snuggly, lovely

wishiwasonholiday · 03/10/2012 07:04

Tested my didriksons Veronica out yesterday in the torrential downpour at school run time, it was lovely and warm and kept me very dry, my legs were drenched but at least my top half was warm and dry!

accessorieshelp · 03/10/2012 10:53

waiting for my didriksons lindsey to arrive but am worried it's going to be too short. I really want/need something that's down to my knees so that my thighs don't get wet

Bunsouttheoven · 03/10/2012 18:29

My Naomi in aubergine arrived today (ordered sat). I ordered a 12 (38) & I think it's too big., I am normally a 12. Bit disappointed actually, I think it looks a bit more fitted in the picture. Not sure whether to return it (at my cost!) & get a 10 or get a refund & begin the search again.
Has anyone seen the red? What sort of red is it? Would have ordered graphite but the hood lining would look bleurgh with my colouring. Is the shadow more grey or beige/stone?

wishiwasonholiday · 03/10/2012 18:30

Not sure if its the sand but my Veronica in shadow is green.

Bunsouttheoven · 03/10/2012 20:07

Ok thanks wish, it's hard to tell from the online photos.

PebblePots · 03/10/2012 20:16

buns - do you not like the eggplant colour? I've just ordered that colour too!

If you got a size down, that would be more fitted wouldn't it? Or since you are slim, you could try the merrell ellenwood, as I gather they are not cut as generously as the didriksons.

Piemistress · 04/10/2012 09:06

I am swithering over which didriksons jacket to order, is it just me or do they all look similarish which makes the decision even harder! I would like a nice shop nearby to stock some so I can try some in! Awaiting to see how long the Lindsay jacket is on accessorise

MorrisZapp · 04/10/2012 09:19

Am meeting DP in town tomorrow so that he can chuck in his tuppence worth on the coat dilemma.

I've narrowed it down to three:

Merrell Ellenwood. It's the most flattering by far, but the material is a bit stiff and unwelcoming.

Jack Wolfskin Icestorm (?). Warm, cosy, soft, flattering. But not waterproof.

North Face Arctic parka. Ludicrously warm, fur on hood is detachable, would last many years. But not as flattering (especially from the back).

All three easy to find in Edinburgh, at Cotswold Outdoor and the North Face shop. I think DP is gonna say get the North Face. It's 320 quid in the shop, holy moley. But can get it for 270 online.

Will report back!

accessorieshelp · 04/10/2012 10:21

piemistress jacket didn't arrive yesterday Sad so waiting today. Need to go food shopping but don't want to miss the special delivery gah
yes they are all very similar and so annoying that there's nowhere to try them on

Curtsey · 04/10/2012 10:29

I've ordered the Didrikson's Cathyln from Viking Kids, waiting for it to arrive. Terrifed by the cost but determined to be warm and dry this year for once. My last version of a 'decent' coat was a 10-year-old parka from AWear, hmm. I'm a size 8 normally so have ordered the 6 in the hope that it'll fit. I will update once I've tried it on!

accessorieshelp · 04/10/2012 10:32

curtsey will be interested to know what it's like as I was dithering between that and the lindsey - cathlyn's more waterproof but lindsey looks longer (although both say 3/4 length on didriksons website).

Curtsey · 04/10/2012 10:42

I'll let you know! I'm a shortarse so hopefully it'll feel that bit longer on me.

accessorieshelp · 04/10/2012 10:46

I'm a shortarse too - has its benefits sometimes!

My2Monkeys · 04/10/2012 12:03

Buns, it sounds as if it's just too big? The general advice seems to be to size down and so if you're normally a 12 you should probably go for the 10. Have you tried adjusting the poppers on the belt? I find that mine is quite nicely fitted, but I did size down.

NumptyMum · 04/10/2012 12:15

For anyone looking for a waterproof but NOT long or v warm coat, I like the look of the Siri Gore-tex from Sprayway...

Piemistress · 04/10/2012 12:37

I am also a shortarse at 5'1". There are better photosvofvthe jackets on their online catalogue, still swithering about the Lindsey, shame I can't find a place that does free returns. Quite a few stockists of kids didriksons stuff near me but no ladies jackets!

Cocochops · 04/10/2012 13:01

I'm back with my Didrikson Lindsey review. Its been sat in the post office since Saturday and I have only been able to pick it up today but worth the wait - I love it!
I got the dark green it definitely does not look as green as on the viking kids website more like a brown grey colour this website shows a better colour here

  • Very warm
  • Brilliant enormous hood not like most coats that cover about half the head
I am definitely going to remove the fur until winter sets in though looks a bit eskimo like on this lovely autumn day!
  • Front length - mid thigh ( I am 5ft 4)
  • Back length - about 6 inches past bum
  • My only complaint is the arns are a bit long for me but I am short so I just kind
of roll them back and it looks fine -Lovely fabric not shiny at all -Lovely day here so haven't been able to test out the waterproofness but from what I have read should be fine

Oh and definitely size down

Hope that's useful!

Piemistress · 04/10/2012 13:07

Oooo thanks! Am swithering about sizes, normally an 8 but since recent arrival of DD am deffo nearer a 12 around the bust and tum. Not sure what size to get!

accessorieshelp · 04/10/2012 13:12

hmm cocochops that's interesting, mine has just been delivered and I am really disappointed!

good points:
-very warm

  • not too chunky considering warmth
  • reaches my knees at the back (am 5ft 3) - only mid thigh at front though

bad points:

  • not bad as such but I would describe the colour as dark brown, not at all green
  • got a size 8 (am normally 10) & its still generous
  • arms look too roomy
  • looks like a mountain jacket, not as urban as I'd have hoped
  • I think there is a slight sheen to the fabric
  • fur squashed but that's probably from packaging & could be fluffed up
  • I know its main aim is to be functional but it just doesn't DO anything for me

So, am going to have to send it back and go back to the drawing board. How frustrating (& I'll have to pay for postage too)

Piemistress · 04/10/2012 13:21

Paying for return postage is what I hate as probably about £10 for the jacket? I did a google image search of the jacket but didn't reveal much. Dilemma! The merrel jackets just don't fit my shape at all.

kiwidreamer · 04/10/2012 13:48

zoovillage.com have very good photos of the Lindsey, I'm a bit disappointed to hear that its not a proper green (I ordered mine last night) I really didnt want a khaki colour, you will absolutely need to size down maybe even 2 sizes, I'm a 14/16 and was recommended by VikingKids to order a 12, I'm not convinced but will wait and see when it arrives. The generous sizing seems to be throughout the Didrikson range. VK estimated it would be £5/6 to return the item and you dont pay postage on a replacement item.

Cocochops · 04/10/2012 13:56

Thats a shame accesories its annoying not to be able to try on. Maybe the 6 would be better ( I got the 6 am normally an 8) but I guess you don't want to have to pay the postage on the off chance. Hope you find something
