I don't like Boden's creepy e-mail...anyone else?

I have just been sent an email with details of some stuff I put in my basket and later removed with a ' we think you have overlooked purchasing these items' type message.

I am not signed into my account.

That's really intrusive isn't it?

I think these are creepy tactics.

I am going to deregister now.

It's quite common these days. You'll get them from loads of places - Littlewoods, ASOS sometimes, Boots sometimes, Topshop, La Senza...

It's an automated process of matching your IP address to your account. Some places send a voucher code to tempt you into finishing the order, some just email to remind you.

I wouldn't see it as too creepy.

GobblersKnob · 07/09/2012 12:57

I get them from a few places, I am always sticking stuff in baskets, often to see what postage is and then changing my mind.

QueenieLovesEels · 07/09/2012 13:01

I don't like the sense of tracking and invasion of privacy.

I won't shop with them again as a result as I don't think it is acceptable.

It would only be creepy if it said 'You've made a mistake, you look so good in our easy peacock shift we know you'd look great in all colourways of the rumpled cashmere tunic...........'

imnotmymum · 07/09/2012 13:05

My mind was racing then at what Biden was going to say..thought they had been spying on you wearing non-Boden stuff and was insulting you...

imnotmymum · 07/09/2012 13:05

Boden not Biden who the hell is that been even creepier

FamiliesShareGerms · 07/09/2012 13:06

No, I don't like that. I also don't like the fake chumminess of emails saying things like "hi families, I've noticed you've not shopped with us for a while, is it something we said?" I'm quite happy to have a distinct customer / provider relationship, not a new BFF when I purchase something!

QueenieLovesEels · 07/09/2012 13:08

If I was signed in then that would be a different matter, but tracking what you are browsing otherwise is really off.

Northernlurkerisbackatwork I would laugh but give it a year......I mean who the fuck do they think they are.

I never gave them permission to do this.

tell you what I find creepy, when I go on some random webpage and it has adverts saying 'buy now' for stuff I've previously looked at on Amazon

Pinot · 07/09/2012 13:11

It's just Cookies, isn't it? You can get cookie deleting programmes that run on your PC.

EdMcDunnough · 07/09/2012 13:12

Yes when either thing happens it determines me NOT to go back and complete my purchase.

I'm not stupid - I left my basket there for you to 'trip over' (ha ha) because therewas only one item I liked in the entire website, or your postage was outrageous, or I simply changed my mind.

Is that Ok with you???????!

frankie76 · 07/09/2012 13:15

Sorry but it means you won't shop anywhere on line then
All retailers track your online journey
(I work in the industry)
And then we use it all for analysis - these are called dropped baskets,
So you had better de register everywhere

Not sayings its right but we all do it

SoupDragon · 07/09/2012 13:15

I never gave them permission to do this.

I bet you did. You may not realise it though.

QueenieLovesEels · 07/09/2012 13:17

Have you noticed that if you delete cookies and not allow them you can't access most websites?

I just think they have sunk to a whole new low. The chummy emails and overfamilarity is pretty objectionable but this takes the bloody biscuit.

QueenieLovesEels · 07/09/2012 13:20

They all track you!!!!!! Shock Angry

I feel really green.

I really hate the whole Johnny Boden-missing-you, you haven't been here lately, how can we win you back thing, with subtext reading 'you're a silly housewife, aren't you? You're emotionally needy!'

gastrognome · 07/09/2012 13:25

I don't like those kind of tactics either. I'd email them and tell them you object. Nothing to lose, really.

sieglinde · 07/09/2012 13:43

frankie, is that why things I look at keep showing up on The Guardian webpage?

hattymattie · 07/09/2012 14:36

My God - I've a trail of full baskets everywhere - talk about fantasy shopping! Sometimes even my kids fill up baskets. I'd better get on to this.

PretzelTime · 07/09/2012 15:19

Creepy. I change my mind all the time during online shopping and wouldn't want an email like that!
Send them an email and tell them what you think.

NCForNow · 07/09/2012 15:23

I remember working for a company and they said that "catching" those lost customers who stick things in their basket but don't buy them, was a big issue...they were out to get them!

LaurieFairyCake · 07/09/2012 15:25

I think you need to be a bit more dispassionate about it - the computer sent you an email about the incomplete purchase as it's a marketing tactic with results.

same as Johnny being matey - this is cos he knows that repeat customers is where you make your money, hence why I get an email at least once a week.

if we weren't such sheep and all bought from the same place once we started it wouldn't happen Grin

MissBoPeep · 07/09/2012 15:31

You would be amazed at what is known about you from your shopping habits and use of credit card.

If you buy by credit card, a huge amount of info is collected.

There are people sorting through and storing this data in data warehouses every minute of the day- in order to market products and companies.

Big brother IS watching you us.

PretzelTime · 07/09/2012 15:37

S-so what sort of thing do they know MissBoPeep?

valiumredhead · 07/09/2012 15:39

It's not creepy. Amazon do it all the time with there 'things you might be interested in' links.
