I don't like Boden's creepy e-mail...anyone else?

I have just been sent an email with details of some stuff I put in my basket and later removed with a ' we think you have overlooked purchasing these items' type message.

I am not signed into my account.

That's really intrusive isn't it?

I think these are creepy tactics.

I am going to deregister now.

'we think you have overlooked purchasing these items'

That's actually kind of creepy.
And normal ad emails are really annoying!

Eliza22 · 07/09/2012 16:35

Johhny is very sneaky.... I'd not like that either.

And I'm sick to death of all the catalogues that I receive. What a shocking waste of paper.

BonnyDay · 07/09/2012 17:45

Lol at OP utterly over reacting.

FamiliesShareGerms · 07/09/2012 18:24

Actually, I think cookies and all the other data tracking stuff is creepy, and one of those things that has just sort of happened without any proper public debate about whether we want to be watched in this way online. I don't think you have to be a tin foil hatted conspiracy theorist not to like it!

SoupDragon · 07/09/2012 18:30

All you have to do is go and delete them. You don't have to leave the cookies there beyond the time you are on the site.

travailtotravel · 07/09/2012 18:44

Right, cookies. Easy to sort on your browser settings, also ALL websites should tell you now whether they use cookies and what they use them for . I can't see one on the Boden site but it will be somewhere.

It is a real balance, on the one hand you get offers tailored to your browsing history having used them, on the other you find them intrusive ... I'd write to Johnny and tell him its creepy. It would be interesting to see what his response is.

GobblersKnob · 07/09/2012 19:12

How do you delete cookies?

I know naaathing about anything techy.

frankie76 · 07/09/2012 22:06

Basically companies track your journey
So as someone said when you view things they can if they wish send emails like ' you might like these things' a la amazon
Or if you purchase something they will send you ideas based on that choice
Or on the first page on a website we can tell how you click through to the product so we can monitor how effective items on the first page is
Obviously companies on line when you buy keep your size info etc
So at the end of the year we can say averages e.g customers who bought this were on average aged 35 and the most popular size is a 16
Or Liz from London always buys dressed from us but never underwear - shall we send her an email on underwear and see if we can get her to purchase

TheWonderfulFanny · 08/09/2012 16:03

Now this tempts me to start filling random baskets everywhere and never completing the purchase. Thinking of those disappointed faces will give me a lovely warm glow...

BanoffeeSplitz · 08/09/2012 19:29

TBH I was expecting something creepier in tone, given the smarminess of the writing in the Boden catalogues Grin.

I'm with the people who find data-tracking a bit creepy, I use CCleaner every now & then to clear cookies - useful if you are looking up things like train / plane journeys where it might actually affect the price you are quoted.

OTOH a follow-up email with a voucher code to tempt me into purchase would be nice - I have never had one of those. I must be fantasy shopping in the wrong places! (Although, in all honesty, 10% off or whatever probably wouldn't make my fantasy shopping suddenly affordable).

FrancesFarmer · 09/09/2012 00:58

It's sort of reassuring/erotic to think that Johnny's watching you like that though, isn't it?

Southwest · 09/09/2012 01:17

So can anyone give us a crash corse on how to delete cookies

Also I can't be the only one who never gives out accurate personal info in response to those kind of questions am I?

SoupDragon · 09/09/2012 08:46

In your browser there will be a security option which allows you to delete cookies and/or temporary internet files.

Phaedra11 · 09/09/2012 09:01

I had a similar email from Toast after I changed my mind about buying a dress mid checkout but they took a different angle. They said they were concerned there had been a technical hitch with the website which had prevented me from completing my sale and to please let them know if this had been the case. Otherwise they were sorry to bother me etc.

I did think at the time it was probably a sneaky way of reminding me to buy the item. I did eventually but not until I saw it in the sale Smile

Llareggub · 09/09/2012 09:16

I'm happy for them to do this so long as it is accompanied by a big fat discount.

sieglinde · 09/09/2012 13:59

But I HATE the way websites keep trying to make me buy e.g. undies when I'm looking for a dress, ffs. Why can't I just buy another dress/book/packet of gingersnaps? Why do they always change their MO to try to hook new sales instead of attracting repeat buyers with variation on a theme?
