Best nail polish colour for short nails?

I have cut and filed them short and now want to paint them. I have a lot of colours, most of which don't suit me so some ideas would be good please.

I like dark colours on shorter nails. Blackened reds, navy, dark green, plums and purples. Or brights are good too! Orange, yellow or hot pink.

Bright red on short square nails looks fab

What Krumbum said. Proper red too. Nothing quite like it. Loreal ROuge Cancan or rimmel do one in the same shade.

clear/french manicure, black, green, fun but quite dark colours. Red on short nails looks horrible.

There is a lovely dark sparkly OPI called My Private Jet which looks good on short nails (& feet)

You think so Pavlov? I think it looks horrible on long nails. Personal taste I suppose!

well actually, tbf, i don't really like red nail police maybe that is why!

Short nails look better with colour or without. Long nails look old fashioned and dated now imo............

oh really? that is good as I have awful nails that only look vaguely decent cut short.

I work with someone who has long talons always painted in a sort of pearly neutral shade and they look so ageing but she obviously loves them.

I filed mine short this morning & painted with Chanel Rouge Noir - love dark dark on short nails, but equally I have a fabulous bright orange Essie (name escapes me now) that looks amazing. Proper Club Orange orange.

cahu - IMHO too. Anything more than 2 or 3 millimeters of length from the pink. Thought I was more or less alone in that TBH.

Mrs Lettuce, I think that when something becomes so wag-like or Towie-fied or just so easily available eg french manicure, long gel nails, eye lash extensions, it immediately becomes naff.

I just got Chanel Particuliere (sort of greyish/brown colour - much nicer than it sounds!) and I LOVE it!

And dont forget to leave a bare strip of nail either side when you apply the polish , it makes the nails look so much longer.

You need to just go and try loads on and see what suits your skin tone. Although I noticed on my last trip to boots that they have notices everywhere saying not to test the nail varnish. Not that it stopped me

Thank you for all your ideas. I am suprised there is so many fans of the red nail. I have always been a bit scared of bright red. I don't buy expensive polish as I find most look awful on me but don't mind as much when only spent a few pounds.

You won't mind getting less than a full bottle when you buy some then. As other people may have done the same.

I got mine done this morning and they are very short with a chocolate brown polish - it's maybe got a hint of gold through it too. It's very shiny and I love it!
I love dark colours on short nails - dark blue, brown, red and also like the sort of griege colours.

Rimmel do a nice cheap version of Rouge Noir...think it's called Black Cherries if I remember. Fab on short nails. Love the colour of the Chanel polishes but find their staying power, even with a topcoat, is pretty poor...

Has anyone got the same ones as me or are they so old no one else has them??
