Alternative wedding dress which doesn't cost the earth?

Ooh, a S&B picture thread! I have a question up my sleeve (no pun intended Wink)

DP and I are engaged, and I've been thinking about wedding dresses.

I'm not into traditional white wedding dresses. I think they are lovely, but are simply not me at all, it's not what I want.

I'd like to get married in a colourful, pretty dress which has a sense of occasion, but it doesn't need to be weddingy at all. I expect it won't even come from a wedding range.

I don't want to spend the earth! Maximum budget probably about £500 but hoping to spend less. As I'll be giving birth between now and the wedding, I can't say for sure what size I'll be, but hopefully a curvy 14 (possibly more realistically a 16!)

Any ideas lovely mumsnetters? I'm not sure where to start!

50's style ?

BlueMoon74 · 07/08/2012 10:05

Ebay! I got a £1500 Maggie Sottero dress for £200. It arrived dry cleaned, the postage alone had cost her £50. It's stunning! Would seriously advise having a look on there. Good luck! :)

Look Darling v cute

threeleftfeet · 07/08/2012 10:45

OK, trying the new picture thingy, let's see if it works?!

OP posts:
threeleftfeet · 07/08/2012 10:52

Yay! it worked!

CMOTDibbler thanks for the 50s dress. It's absolutely lovely .. but not really me.
And too white, I'd like something colourful :)

White became fashionable for weddings because Queen Victoria got married in white. (Before that you'd just wear your best frock). I reckon it's time for some new wedding fashions! :)

Here's the Look Darling pic (keeping my fingers crossed it works again!)

Again too white and weddingy, sorry Sad

The VoH one comes in all sorts of colours (I have red with polka dots) and the LD can be any colour

threeleftfeet · 07/08/2012 11:00

BlueMoon I'm not against second hand. But I'm reluctant to buy anything without trying it on - I have big boobs and a big belly! Some dresses are flattering on me and some are simply not!!

I suppose I could re-ebay if it doesn't fit?! Maybe too much of a hassle though. I'll have a think about it (and a browse on ebay!)

This website has loads of coloured dresses, and I believe you can change the colours too.

What about something from Get Cutie, or is their stuff too day-dress?

www.getcutie.co.uk

LeggyBlondeNE · 07/08/2012 11:30

Nightwish - one has to be cautious with those Chinese internet dress makers; as they're working from pictures only, you won't get the actual dress pictured but their approximation of it and it won't be the fabrics used by the actual designers whose dress is pictured. Even if you're okay with the fact that they're ripping off designers, there were very mixed reports on the wedding forum I was one from people using those companies. Some dresses were great and some were terrible.

op - you could try bridesmaid dresses instead? Or just head to your nearest ball dress boutique. I nearly got mine from one of those before falling for an amazing red dress in the local bridal shop!

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 07/08/2012 11:30

courtesan boutique have loads of lovely dresses that'd fit the bill.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 07/08/2012 11:30

KissMyEmbroideryHoop · 07/08/2012 11:33

WHEN did that picture thing come about??? And how do I do it? OP I am looking now for a link I was given on here...lovely dresses they are...

KissMyEmbroideryHoop · 07/08/2012 11:34

YAY....found it...here Whirling Turban

These frocks are wow!

KissMyEmbroideryHoop · 07/08/2012 11:35

Look at this one whirlingturban.com/petal_bust_bodice.html

threeleftfeet · 07/08/2012 11:40

Nightwish, thanks that's a brilliant link for wedding dresses in lovely colours (not white!) and in budget too.

But ... they're still too weddingy for me, sorry! (Difficult bugger aren't I?!)

It's the shape. I'm not keen on meringue, and I don't want to look like a princess.

I do like this one from that site - it's a lovely colour. But not keen on the shape.

Coast always have lovely stuff well within that budget!

threeleftfeet · 07/08/2012 11:56

Limelight I absolutely love get cutie!

It is a bit too day dress though I think. I do want a dress with a sense of occasion, just not weddingy!

Thanks for the reminder about Get Cutie dresses though, reckon I should definitely get a couple of them for the honeymoon :)

threeleftfeet · 07/08/2012 11:58

KissMyEmbroideryHoop they've added the new picture thing to just a few threads. There's a S&B one, a cake one and a general one IIRC

OP posts:
threeleftfeet · 07/08/2012 12:19

And this one - you can get it in loads of colours.

Although I suspect it wouldn't suit my shape.
