Is it really bad that I don't?

What usual said!

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 30/05/2012 21:45

I just looked and my oldest mascara is about 6 years old.

So no.

SwedishEdith · 30/05/2012 21:46

No, I don't. Probably got disappointed with it before then though

MrsCog · 30/05/2012 21:46

No I've never done this, mine lasts about a year. To be honest I've always assumed that all those 'guidelines' on when to throw stuff out is just to make extra money from people rebuying. I'm not falling for it!

TwllBach · 30/05/2012 21:49

I always get my mascara second hand from my mother. The last one I had for about three years

JennyPiccolo · 30/05/2012 21:51

i thought that it was nonsense for years till i had mouldy handcream once. BOAK.

MrsRhettButler · 30/05/2012 21:53

No.

AWomanCalledHorse · 30/05/2012 21:56

I noticed my year old mascara whiffed a bit so I chucked it, haven't bought any more since (that was over a year ago)!

ZacharyQuack · 30/05/2012 22:42

I do, but it's probably used up by then and I have had eye infections in the past so I'm very wary now.

valiumredhead · 31/05/2012 08:49

Mine never lasts that long!

Trills · 31/05/2012 08:51

I don't throw makeup away unless it looks or feels or smells unpleasant in some way.

Trills · 31/05/2012 08:51

Mascara is the one thing that I always use up though.

noddyholder · 31/05/2012 08:51

Never get to 6 months I am mascara junkie!

jubilucket · 31/05/2012 08:58

One mascara used to last about two years, but now it's only about three months, mainly because I have teenage dds! Perhaps I need to stop leaving it in the bathroom where the little monkeys can get at it.

Eliza22 · 31/05/2012 09:16

Yes. They dry out or go clumpy and they harbour all kinds of bugs.

Then again, the most I'd pay for one is £8 or thereabouts. Wouldn't be quite so keen to discard if I bought Lancôme or YSL, as I did in my child free (working) days!

Pinkglow · 31/05/2012 09:18

Yeah I chuck mine before then, mostly because they have become clumpy or run out out. My clinque ones though will last and perform much longer.

ComradeJing · 31/05/2012 12:04

Mine don't last 6 months TBH. I do stick to just one brand/type though and use that. I imagine if I was a bit of a mascara junkie and had lots of different ones it would be different.

I'm pretty ruthless with make up full stop though. If I'm not wearing it, out it goes.

OhChristFENTON · 31/05/2012 12:07

I have just realised I haven't bought any new makeup since I splashed out on some for my wedding day...

..that was nearly five years ago, and I'm still using it Blush

happybubblebrain · 31/05/2012 12:11

I have some makeup that is 20 years old. Only lipstick seems to go off. I've used mascaras that are a few years old and I've never had an infection.

I don't agree with the 12m labelling that they put on toiletries and makeup nowadays. It's just to get us to buy more. Very wasteful.

DarrowbyEightFive · 31/05/2012 12:15

The woman in Clinique actually didn't believe me a while back when I told her that my old mascara had lasted 10 years. I used it perhaps once a month or less. From the amount she had piled on her own eyes I imagine she gets through one a week. The 10yo stuff didn't go off, didn't smell, didn't dry up or any of the other scare stories.

DinahMoHum · 31/05/2012 12:22

after 2 or 3 months i think they go clumpy so i chuck them

BornToFolk · 31/05/2012 12:23

Mine never lasts 6 months. I find that it starts to get a bit dry/clumpy/funny smelling after a while (prob 4-5 months) then I buy a new one.

MrsGypsy · 31/05/2012 12:41

I buy the cheapest mascara I can find (after years buying Lancome) as I've found there's really not that much difference between them. I then have no problem throwing it away after about 4 months or so. I'm also prone to eye infections, so I'm keen to throw, so to speak.
