I am small and slim (5'2", size 8) but I have ishoos with my body and a skeletal condition which means that Im not happy about exposing too much rib (they are v prominent). my legs arent great (long, but untoned) and I quite like the retro look. this is a hot fave at the mo, and I like this but would quite like a tankini too.

please help!

Generally I would say avoid tankinis as they are not that flattering -- but they may work for you.

I think you need to try on.

Boden has a couple of retro suits & bikinis free deliveries and returns I would start there and try them on at home in several colours and styles.

I looked at the boden ones, they are nice! I love the red or dead tankinis that look more like ultra short dresses.

RIGHT NOW LISTEN TO ME.
I feel very very strongly about this.
Women of all sizes! Bare yourselves. Do not siend your life apologizing for your body!
We all know who looks best on the beach. These rare creatures make up about 1% of the population.
In the mean time be confident ! Wear a bikini !
If you go to the Med women of all ages just get on with it.
Choose colour well, that will be your friend.
Do not try on in horrible changing room. Take home and try on tops first always first thing in the morning in DAYLIGHT not standing under a curling light. (Also in am body flatter)
Then try bottoms. Look at shape not the size.

Also if you are conscious of hips/ tum/ tits the. Do this

  1. Get a fake tan. Will do wonders
  2. But coordinating accessories. Not a "Brits abroad " sarong but a vest top (for tummy obsessives ) in pretty coordinating colour ", for when you have to build sandcastles.
  3. Look at little skirts for thigh moments. Lands end do them and also freya.
  4. Bhs. (I know) are ace at beachwear

If you like freya ir panache don't rule out eBay once you know your size. I get lots from there.
to op
Frills and ruffles are your friend to bulk you up. Plus a tiny vest top.

Ceiling light.
Not curling

The problem is (and I feel a bit wimpy saying this) my stomach is a mass of scars from ep, cs, various gynae ops and I am anorexic. My weight is normal but I do freak out a bit (although if I use the same thinking for normal clothes, ie baggy does don't hide but draws attention to) it makes sense. Also my ribs are terrible. I mean lumpy and my spares can be wobbled.

That said, I like proper bikinis and I have one in particular which looks fab. Spray tan and wax is booked (ouchee) this is our first booked in advance, proper in the summer rather than last minute, january, holiday abroad. I can't wait! I do like the idea of little skirts though.

Lumbago.... Fab post

lumbago · 13/05/2012 14:04

Thanks.
Am quite evangelical.
Freya did a skirt last year. Was in next.

landofsoapandglory · 13/05/2012 14:05

Matalan do some fab, IMVHO, swimwear. Lots of styles you can mix and match

What about some bikini bottoms like this?

If you sift through Very's swimwear they have loads of different bikini bottom styles, as well as tops, little skirts etc.

lumbago · 13/05/2012 14:08

On next freya do a pier tankini. . Lovely pink
Take it BUT take the matching bikini top. You can always return If you don't wear.
I have a mate with "horrendous" Arm burn scars but she wears sleeveless and once you've seen it you just see her pretty face

noddyholder · 13/05/2012 14:14

this is lovely and would look good with denim shorts and a white fine loose vest

lumbago · 13/05/2012 14:14

Or here the whole range. I like the idea. You can add of remove layers Depending on what you're doing or how you are feeling.

lumbago · 13/05/2012 14:15

I always think they look ouchy noddy.
I think an all in one is nice but ime in the med you look more out of place than with your tummy out.

noddyholder · 13/05/2012 14:20

I find them comfy. So flattering just to show shoulders on me anyway my stomach is my worst bit but i still wear bikinis in the same way i still wear bra and knickers. No one looks i am sure and tbh I just don't care! When my boobs were still in good shape a racing back vest and bikini bottoms was my uniform for the beach but sadly I need scaffold now.

lumbago · 13/05/2012 14:21

I've always found halter makes me lok hefty. Horses courses etc

noddyholder · 13/05/2012 14:22

I don't think anyone looks out of place it is just in the uk that we even DISCUSS it! My mum wears a bikini and she is just older woman in bikini ime. I don't think anyone is expecting a parade of claudia schiffers (kids self)

GobblersKnob · 13/05/2012 14:27

Leia outlt has lots of nice Freya tankinis.

I like the freya ones they are long in the body so you don't have that horrible gap that most tankinis give you, so it is more liek a swimsuit but separates that fit you.

OracleInaCoracle · 13/05/2012 14:33

I look pretty good in halternecks, I am an hourglass so anything that looks a little bit vintage/retro looks good. I am booking a wax and spray tan, getting hair dyed caramel blonde and cut. I lknow that once Im there, I will feel better. I like the skirtini's.
