I am red and proud Grin

I use a bodyshop lip-liner on my eyebrows because I can't find the right shade anywhere else. It's a warm beige with just the right hint of reddishness. Acts just like a brow pencil - has that slight extra softness that helps with application.

I have a smattering of wiry grey hairs silvery tresses, and have found a shade of hair dye that I really like: 'Butterscotch' by Casting. It's supposed to create a strawberry blonde shade, but comes out as a warm mid auburn (on my hair anyway, which is, well, warm mid auburn). Over the counter dyes tend to be much darker than the colour on the box, and this works well, although it could be a smidgeon more vibrant if I'm being picky. Looks natural though.

Would love to hear from other ginges (yes, we can use that word - but the non-red, nooooo!).

Redhead checking in.

I have been dyeing my eyelashes/brows for a few years now. I use Eylure Dylash. My brows are quite dark anyway so it works really well. Without it my pale face looks washed out and dull.

I've only used hair dye twice on my hair as I really like the natural colour. I used 'Amber' by Casting and it came out quite a bonkers red. Like my head was on fire. So I'm not sure I'll be doing that again.

I'd like to hear from redheads who've found a perfect lipstick or eyeshadow colour. I tend to wear golds/browns for eyeshadow, but I'm wondering if there is an HG shade that will make me look totally gorgeous.

I am getting my colours done soon so hopefully that will reveal some new things for me!

lisaro · 03/05/2012 11:13

Another ginge reporting for duty. Mine is a complaint I'm afraid. Brown mascara. Why is it so bloody hard to come by? I really do see it as discrimination against fair people.

OovoofWelcome · 03/05/2012 11:13

Hello jeanvaljean Smile

I've tried that 'Amber' shade and found it too unnatural too. I love my original hair colour as well, but, well, the minor grey issue is there to be attended to Grin

Lipstick wise, I like 'Grace' by No.7 (put on and wiped off a bit). L06 by Une is quite nice too. I know what you mean though - am yet to find my perfect shade.

Keep trying to find a perfect red too, but can't quite nail it...

Hi lisaro (remember you from my other thread - you have the lovely son don't you? Smile) Welcome fellow ginge!

Yes brown mascaras are becoming quite an endangered species. I use black now (Maybelline) because the last brown I used looked too muddy and not quite right...think it was a Maybelline one too. I remember Almay used to do quite a nice one, that was my first ever mascara as a teenager.

I bought a Max Factor mascara called 'Burning Auburn' the other day and got quite excited that I might have found a lovely intense but natural-looking shade. I looked like I'd been crying for two days/had an eye infection Grin

Max factor foundation is nice and pale.

notyummy · 03/05/2012 11:23

Thanks for the hair dye suggestion. I also have some annoying greys at the parting and have been summoning up the courage to dye. I have auburn hair and brown eyes, so I find I am not as pale as some other red heads.

turkeyboots · 03/05/2012 11:24

Hello fellow red heads.

I recently bought a Kate Moss for Rimmel lipstick which is working really well for me. Its advertised as a range of perfect reds. No 250, called "stare at me" is as close to a red that I've ever got.

I use a bodyshop eyebrow pencil for redheads which works perfectly for me as too lazy to be bothered with eyebrow and lash dying.

Any suggestions for brightening red hair, apart from a full dye job? My hair has faded dramatically in the last few year, sniff. People have recently asked me where my DC (both bright red) get their hair colour from!

likelucklove · 03/05/2012 11:25

Marking place for later when I have time.

Redhead with black eyebrows and really light skin so I look a bit weird at the best of times!

Glad to meet more ladies Smile

Pinot · 03/05/2012 11:31

Titian here!

I use black mascara - brown is never enough and I need oomphy eyes to stand out.

I use Soap & Glory Arch de Triumph brown pencil - it's a great soft brown colour and works really well I think.

I've just started using Madder Roor shampoo by Aveda as another redheaded MNer told me it's good for brightening the red in hair. Will let you know!

My tips are that a coral blush shade can look fabulous (Bobbi Brown Sheer Cheek Stick in Coral is great), but equally a barbie pink (like Dandelion by Benefit) can really look great.

Pinot · 03/05/2012 11:32

Madder Root, sorry for typo

OovoofWelcome · 03/05/2012 11:48

turkey will definitely check out that K Moss lipstick! Have about ten slightly wrong reds knocking about in my make-up box right now.

Pinot agree re coral and bubblegum pink working really well as blusher.

Mac foundations are ace. I use NC15 and it's a really good shade, not too pinkish but a good pale.

Ooh I'm ginge!

I like an aquamarine eyeliner. Currently got an easy to apply one from no 7 which gets compliments.

I like bare minerals which seems to work well with my pallor. Good blusher from there too.

Eyebrows dyed dark brown and eyelashes black. Wear black mascara not brown as I need the definition. I like max factor mascara. Loreal is rubbish and flaky.

Would like to try lipstick as just worn gloss for years. My mouth is quite big though and I feel lipstick makes it stand out too much...

RedAngryBird · 03/05/2012 12:46

Hi fellow foxy ladies...

I use mac foundation nc20 and concealer too.

Benefit eyebrow kit in shade light. it has a waxy section that fixes the brow.

Eye shadow love mac...shades era, cork, sable, taupe satin...great at making blue eyes pop.

Blush benefit coralista and bella bamba.

Mascara at the moment is max factor lash extension brown/black.

Watching this thread with great interest...

likelucklove · 03/05/2012 15:17

This is making me want to go out and buy more make up!

I do all mine on a budget, but pre-DD, I always bought Touché Eclat Pen and the foundation - it's the only one that gives me enough coverage and is light enough!

Like I said earlier, I have dark eyebrows and have never even thought of dying them before. how do you do it? I'm scared, I'm the type of person where it would go wrong on and they would come out looking platinum blonde Blush

I use black mascara, usually Loreal One Million Lashes which I use my Boots points on! I have dark blue eyes, so I like the contrast.

Use a coral blusher, Benefit, but will use red cheek stain if using my red lipstick, which I go from Sephora in America (Kat Von D's range iyww). If not, I use either Vaseline or No7 lipsticks, I have a light pink one I am loving at the moment.

I have just tried E.L.F cosmetics and was pleasantly surprised! Their pressed powder was light enough and good value (£1.50!), mascara is good for day-to-day and lip gloss wasn't too sticky.

I don't dye my hair because I don't have greys (yet, I'm still a new mum!) but it is getting over the years I kept dying it different colours. Any good ti[s on intensive conditioners, and shampoos/conditioners to bring out our colours? I can barely find the John Freida redhead shampoos anymore :(

AgentProvocateur · 03/05/2012 15:26

I found brown mascara last week - boots own brand, and about £1.99. I'll check exact make when I get home. I was very excited to find it

turkeyboots · 03/05/2012 17:19

I get brown mascara in Tesco, the Barbara Daly range which people rave about. I use the Perfect lash and think its great.

Frontpaw · 03/05/2012 17:25

Never use red lipstick!

Tinted moisturiser is quite good for the pale skinned - Boots was nice but it is now gloopy so I am searching for a new one.

Body Shop make up has rather nice colours. I use a grey-ish L'Oreal mascara which makes lashes look a bit longer than the brown.

Chicksy · 03/05/2012 20:35

Another redhead checking in, although since I had my DC I am not as red as I used to be more strawberry blonde.

Starting to get a few greys but no idea what hair dye I could get that would be similar to my shade.

I gave up on mascara so get my eyebrows tinted dark brown and eyelashes a brown / black. Works well for me and makes me look like I have a face.

Bare minerals for me - fairly medium is a perfect shade.

Can anyone suggest a good blusher from the range?

deltawab · 03/05/2012 20:37

Natural redhead here, mid auburn. After 20+years of dying my hair an array of colours, at 39 and am finally embracing my natural colour and desperately trying to get it back! I'm an inch away i think with Loreal Feria Intense Copper Mango with the exception of a few greys coming through!

The Intense Copper Mango shade is lush, but, they have changed the packaging and although they say the shade hasn't shade, i suspect it has. The forumla has anyway. Last time i tried it with the new box, my hair came out with a slightly more 'artificial' red, than a natural ginge, iukwim? So for now where there are old boxes still on shelves i'm stocking up!

I'm liking Rimmel 24 hr lasting foundation in True Ivory and my latest best buy is Revlon Moisture Rich Lipstick in 'Skyline Pink', a subtle nude pink, goes fab with smoky eyes and vibrant copper hair. I use to use a plum coloured mascara (i have brown eyes) at one point which i got a few compliments on but can't find one anyone now?

knitknack · 03/05/2012 20:47

I'm a redhead too and I LOVE brown mascara... because it's always so cheap on ebay hehehe - seriously, any brand you want, you'll always find black/brown on ebay!

I have dark brown eyes and titan hair (I think, I'll put a pic on my profile). I'm a redhead that suits PINK blushers and pinky toned lipsticks. Bobbi Brown's 'blue raspberry' (not in the least blue) is my best 'my lips but better' lipstick... but her new golden-rose colours are good too (there's about six of them). I've some lipsticks from an american company called 'just for redheads' that are nice too, although very perfumed.

Plum coloured mascara is good for me too Deltwab - (experimented via ebay haha). I think the one I'm using is sold as an enhancer for 'hazel eyes' - it's L'oreal I think - I'll check. It's not a full-on traditional plum, but it works really well - it's much more dramatic than my usual black-brown but not harsh as black would be.

I've just bought 3 cream blushes from NYC (again, love ebay) and ALL THREE are perfect natural pink/tawny shades and all 3 work perfectly.. at around £4.50 each I'm very pleased with those!

I've never dyed (yet). I'm 40 in a few months and have about 10 or so grey hairs but nothing I need to cover (yet). It's great to have this advice for when I do :)

latrucha · 03/05/2012 21:00

Good tip about brown black mascara on ebay!

latrucha · 03/05/2012 21:06

I'm a mid redhead with grey blue eyes. What colour eyeshadow should I wear? I've just started wearing a bit again, but I'm not sure what to go for. I'm wearing a kind of khaki colour.

There's a pic on my profile, though you can't see my eyes (they are the same colour as my sons though who is also there) if anyone is interested!

latrucha · 03/05/2012 21:08

If anyone is going to Spain, there is a brand called Pinaud and they do an eyebrow pencil that I find good. Not a great deal of help...

knitknack · 03/05/2012 21:09

Gorgeous hair! I would have thought either a pale golden taupe, a sheer gold or a wash of plum would look gorgeous!

I've just searched on ebay for 'plum mascara' and there's loads of 'em! brilliant prices too :) < loves being redhead even more >

BeaOnSea · 03/05/2012 21:10

Natural redhead here (medium auburn) which is now coloured lighter due to age & greyness. Sorry - I don't know what colours as I have it done at the hairdressers but have a copper red base colour and lighter red/blondish highlights.

I use Estee Lauder doublewear light foundation in No.1

Although I have pale skin, my eyelashes and eyebrows are naturally dark so I use black mascara and a dark brown eyebrow pencil.

My eyes are green and my everyday eyeshadow is really cheap Wet n Wild duo. You used to be able to get them in Tesco but you can get them online now for as little as 79p !!! Don't let that put you off - they are really good and I have extremely sensitive eyes. The colour I get is E95103.

Brown eyeliner is Bourjois kohl & contour in bronze raffine. I also have a teal colour from the same range when I feel like a change.

Blusher is also Bourjois in Rose Eclat

The lipstick that I have been using for ages is Barbara Daly in Sugar Cane. A lovely reddish brown colour that is quite natural looking.
