I am red and proud Grin

I use a bodyshop lip-liner on my eyebrows because I can't find the right shade anywhere else. It's a warm beige with just the right hint of reddishness. Acts just like a brow pencil - has that slight extra softness that helps with application.

I have a smattering of wiry grey hairs silvery tresses, and have found a shade of hair dye that I really like: 'Butterscotch' by Casting. It's supposed to create a strawberry blonde shade, but comes out as a warm mid auburn (on my hair anyway, which is, well, warm mid auburn). Over the counter dyes tend to be much darker than the colour on the box, and this works well, although it could be a smidgeon more vibrant if I'm being picky. Looks natural though.

Would love to hear from other ginges (yes, we can use that word - but the non-red, nooooo!).

chicksy I use bare minerals blusher in 'kiss' which seems to suit me very well :)

latrucha · 03/05/2012 21:22

I used to use that Rose Eclat one. It's nice.

knitknack- Yours too! Bit darker than mine but lovely and straight and glossy Envy. I'd love that. I've got this in purple dust. Is that plum? (It's useless eyeshadow, btw creases in seconds) will try gold and taupe too. I think I might have some from my young and fashionable days....

Ooo Beaonsea. Green eyes. Wish I had them too. Envy

Hello! I am indeed ginger. Although I am losing red-ness rapidly and becoming a mid-auburn rather than the reddy ginger I once was (and hated when younger). Some white eyebrow hairs and starting to get silvery fine hairs at the temples but not in the habit of dyeing just yet.

Green/hazel eyes, Mac NC15 for foundation most of the time and the palest Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser when my skin is good. I have ginger/light brown eyebrows but I don't dye them as they are pretty bushy/strong even after threading. I try to use brown/black mascara currently Max Factor Masterpiece. I did use a couple of YSL green mascaras (khaki one and a teal one) but I didn't get on with the clumpiness although the colour was gorgeous. Khaki eye liner pencil from No 7 (Metallic eyes in camoulflage).

I struggle with lip colours because my lips are naturally pretty red but I need help as I get older to even out the shape.

I'm quite freckly but the freckles aren't particularly dark so it is always a struggle to get foundation right without being mask-like.

I want to try a Bobbi Brown makeover to see what they suggest. I get tired of always being shown the same tawny shades by make-up sales assistants because I just don't get that excited by them.

readyforno2 · 03/05/2012 23:43

Ginge over here too.

I also use the bare minerals foundation think its "light". I tend not to bother with blusher.
Have always been teased by my sister for my nonexistent eyebrows until we were at a beauty show (she's a beauty therapist) and I came across cresty cosmetics semi-permanent eyebrow make up, can't link properly as on my phone..

There are a few different shades but the one I use is "brown", it's kinda pricey but is do easy to use. Comes with eyebrow stencils and a brush and you don't need to use a lot.
As for dying my hair, have been down the highlight route and once when I was 17 dyed it really dark, let me just say that ginger roots is NOT a good look. Getting the off grey now though so it will likely be on the cards in the not so distant future.
Does nobody else have a problem dying ginger hair? The times I have had it done have taken ages, even eyelashes etc. My sister has to use the blue/black just for it to take.
(sorry about the essay here.. Couldn't stop writing)

Hair love :) I love it!

Ok another tip - Bobbi Briwn 'taupe' eyeshadow for brows. It's NOT taupe, there's nothing grey about it - in fact it looks aubany (sp?) in the pan, so much so that i nearly stopped a makeup artist from using it on me a few years ago when I discovered it ( my brows are dark brown) but it somehow darkens whilst picking up red tons and looks SO natural, it's brilliant. Plus this one has been going for 3 years now and I've barely dented the surface (I wear it every day).

aftereight · 04/05/2012 11:28

latruchca your colouring is exactly like mine! I use dark grey eyeliner and Bobbi Brown 'taupe' on my brows like knitknack.
Bourgois Rose Passionee is my red lipstick, and have just bought a Maybelline lipgloss in Forever Coral which will be good for evenings. I look like I've just been dug up without some colour on my lips!
Has anyone considered semi permanent eyeliner on their top lid to define their eyes? I've read that a skilled beautician can use tiny dots along the lash line so it doesn't look like a hard line.
By coincidence, I have a pack of Casting Butterscotch hair dye - have had it for over a year, not plucked up the courage to mess with my natural colour to cover the few white hairs.

aftereight · 04/05/2012 11:29

Sorry, just looked and my Bobbi Brown shadow for my brows is Sable.

Chicksy · 04/05/2012 21:51

handbagcrab thanks for the tip I will give that one a try.

Krumbum · 05/05/2012 00:45

I'm not ginger but I'm very pale in colouring as my dad is ginger. just thought I'd suggest some brown mascaras as ppl saying they are hard to find. I have a really nice maxfactor one called masterpiece beyond length, it's double ended with a nice brown one end and a gold on the other which is a bit different and nice on lower lashes for a night out. The benefit bad gal in plum is very flattering for pale skin too, not as harsh as black.

knitknack · 05/05/2012 07:56

aftereight I think it just means that BB do lots of natural looking powders that are great for brows!

MIL took the boys to see Matilda last weekend which left DH and I to wander around that there London for a few hours so I dragged him straight to Space NK which I could never afford when I actually LIVED in London (and still can't really being as I'm a teacher and therefore woefully under appreciated... oh wait, hang on, this isn't a teacher thread hahah) anyway, the point is that i bought a 'taupe' from By Terry that is absolutely the most amazing eyeshadow that I have ever owned. It's called 'misty grey' but (and what IS it with make up companies colour definitions?) it's not grey at all ON ME - it's so incredible, I swear it will look different colours on different people... it's kind of multilayered, so on me again it picks out the golden tones in my eyes, whilst still being a neutral taupe. It can be a subtle wash with one layer or really deep and dramatic if I build it up. I"m utterly sold on By Terry makeup now, but since this eyeshadow alone was £23 I think I'll just have to keep dreaming haha

Highly recommend it though - give it a swatch if you're ever passing a SNK.

Just to let you know that I had a makeover at a Bobbi Brown counter today and this is what she used on me:

Eye Brightener (concealer) Light Bisque
Foundation Warm Ivory
Brightening Powder
Bronzer Antigua
Pot Rouge Powder Pink (this is a cream blush)
Lip Colour Rosy 7
Eyeshadow Ivory S1 all over and Stone Cream Shadow
Gel Liner in Black Plum
Black Mascara

I asked for ideas to update my makeup ready for going back to work. So polished, groomed, natural and quick to apply. I liked the colours, the lipstick and blush in particular were good and I bought these. The foundation seemed a bit heavier than I usually wear but looked nice but I've still got loads of my usual type. I don't normally wear bronzer and I'm not sure about having yet another product/step for busy work mornings. The gel liner looked good and I will probably buy this next. I queried black mascara rather than brown/black but the assistant looked at me like I was crazy for not always wearing black!

mathanxiety · 16/05/2012 23:03

DD1 is a redhead with palest pale skin. She uses blacker than black mascara to make her blue eyes stand out, with shades of taupe, light grey or beige on her eyelids if wearing eyeshadow; otherwise she uses black eyeliner on her upper lids. She uses a peach or light pink mousse blush and leaves her lips fairly nude in order to make her eyes the focus. No greys yet.

Misscatterpuss · 16/05/2012 23:10

Hi fellow red heads. Some great tips here. Are we able to extend it to clothing too. Constantly sticking to black, blues and greys as I am afraid of being any braver. Please share any great finds for red heads, although I know it varies on tones etc x

mathanxiety · 17/05/2012 16:07

DD1 wears a lot of peach, cream, taupe and white and the occasional acid-type tone of yellow or green (but she is early 20s). She had a lovely pillarbox red pea coat for a few years that made her really stand out. Bottle green, grey green, and turquoise are also v nice on her. Grey and navy tend to wash her out but she can wear black.

PippiL · 17/05/2012 19:28

I'm a ginge! Grin hello fello gingas.

I wear Lancôme teint idol ultra 02. Just discovered it. It amazing.
No red lipstick. Dior do some lovely sheer ones that work for me in various colours. - Dior addict, High Shine. Have 4 now and only 1 that doesn't really work for me.

Always dye my eyebrows with Eyelure, then pluck like mad.
As someone said, red hair is harder to dye than other colours. It contains the same levels of melanin as black hair apparently.

I've had some terrible dye jobs at hairdressers where they haven't left colour in for long enough and I've ended up with yellow highlights.

PippiL · 17/05/2012 19:37

Oh an another thing...

Does anyone else find that the best thing about being ginga is that you aren't particularly hirsute?! Minimal lady gardening for me Grin

And Tim Minchin wrote a great song about gingas.
