Me Again! A load of make-up questions that have been bugging me...

How do you remove your cleanser? I have a bog standard (Simple) cream cleanser which I massage on, and then wipe off with cotton wool pads before applying toner/moisturiser and so on.
I don't feel that I get the whole load of cleanser off (especially at night when taking makeup off) and wondered if there is a better way to go about it?

Can anyone recommend a good and cheap eye makeup remover (preferably supermarket accessible) that does waterproof mascara easily without my resorting to scrubbing Shock?
I currently have Garnier, and it's just not working well - it struggles even if I'm not using waterproof stuff.

Finally(!) Recommend me a good mascara that doesn't smudge! I use waterproof as it's smudgeproof, but I'd like one that does exciting things to my lashes Wink and waterproof just doesn't. Again, the cheaper the better - under a tenner would be great. I'm trying the Clarins free sample (from Cosmo this month) and it smudges like crazy - so much so, I'm channeling Tian Tian (Giant Panda at Edinburgh Zoo) most of the day.

Anyway - thanks for reading if you got this far! And Thanks if you actually respond!

I use la roche posay cleaner, its a foam so it washes off. I remove my makeup first though with a wipe. Then tone and moisturise. That's at night.
In the morning I just use toner after the shower, and then serum then moisturiser.

I use maybelline mascara, it never smudges on me. :)

GetOrfMoiiLand · 06/03/2012 11:58

For the cleanser, a wonderful method is to get a clean flannel, get it wet under the hottest water you can handle, wring it out and then slap on your face (a bit like the hot towels you get in indian restaurants Grin). It acts as a lovely toner and gets the residue off, and leaves your clean looking glowy.

Ime cheap waterproof removing cleanser doesn't exist - I use bifacils from Lancome (it is £20 but really brilliant) and when I run out of that I use baby oil.

I just use the cheapest mascara I can find - I use waterproof but I don't like thickening products so the cheaper the better. But generally I get the freebie mini mascaras from Lancome and Estee Lauder which you get as a gift set when you buy 2 products from House of Fraser. But Maybelline and Lancome are pretty good under-a-tenner options.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 06/03/2012 11:58

I meant Loreal not Lancome re mascara.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 06/03/2012 11:59

Leaves your skin looking glowy.

God if only I could type properly. Grin

Whitershadeofpale · 06/03/2012 11:59

I would second using a wipe and then a wash off cleanser. I know wipes aren't great for the skin but as I use it then wash straight away I think it's fine. If I don't do this my skin always feels like it's got afilm on it which I hate.

Mascaras unfortunately I can't answer as I'm still looking for the holy grail. A mascara that both works and doesn't smudge.

malakadoush · 06/03/2012 12:05

Vichy eye make up remover is on a par with Lancôme Bifacil - I forgot my Lancôme when on a weekend away in Paris and bought the Vichy for e8. Bargain

Re panda eyes I'm waiting for the reply as my current Rimmel gives me Panda eyes as has YSL, Lancôme you name it!

GetOrfMoiiLand · 06/03/2012 12:06

I will have a look for the vichy then - for me a cheap equivalent of bifacil is the holy grail!

malakadoush · 06/03/2012 12:09

www.garden.co.uk/php/showProducts.php?plu=

The exact Vichy eye make up remover for less than £7

malakadoush · 06/03/2012 12:10

I know only Lancome Bifacil is the eye make remover I've used for donkeys but I'm really impressed with the Vichy.

auldspinster · 06/03/2012 12:14

I use the L'oreal bi-phase remover, works fine for me even with waterproof mascara.

sue52 · 06/03/2012 12:15

I use Aqueous cream and a clean flannel as a cleanser. It gets rid of everything and is very cheap. I use MAC mascara, it stays put all day. I used to use Maybeline but you need a couple of coats for good coverage.

Lulumama · 06/03/2012 12:19

Ok, I use a No 7 hot cloth cleanser, and i bought additional muslin cloths from home bargains for 69 p each. I always use baby oil to take off eye make up incl. waterproof mascara. it takes everything off gently and I have used it for years and years and only just getting a few fine lines round eyes ( am mid thirties ) so I think that using that has kept my under eye area moisturised.

Mascara - revlon grow luscious

a good waterproof one that thickens and makes your lashes glam is Models own

both well under a tenner

Lulumama · 06/03/2012 12:20

making sure your under eye area is free of cream/cleanser/serum etc will help stop your mascara melting away and smudging from your lower lashes

valiumredhead · 06/03/2012 12:32
  • Use a muslin cloth

  • Oil of Olay eye make up cream remover is fab - again use it with a warm muslin cloth.

  • Max Factor Masterpiece doesn't smudge.

ruby22 · 06/03/2012 13:13

Are muslin cloths the same kind of muslin I used for my babies? ie can I chop them up to make the same thing?

Carpe I use the Simple foaming cleanser as found the ,milky one the same.

valiumredhead · 06/03/2012 13:22

People do use them OP but personally when I did that they felt a bit too soft and not exfoliating enough, I use the Liz Earle ones - they used to be a quid each, not sure if they've gone up.

QuinnFabray · 06/03/2012 13:46

Boots Botanics eye make up remover is excellent, and Bourjois ultra glamour mascara is excellent too.

tunaday · 06/03/2012 14:44

Hi Carpe
I use Boots No7 Radiance Boosting Hot Cloth Cleanser. My face feels really clean afterwards and I feel as if all my makeup has been removed.
I LOVE Blinc Mascara. I reckon I have tried EVERY waterproof/Smudgeproof mascara both cheap, expensive and middle of the range. Everything gave me panda eyes within an hour or so. Blinc is the only one Ive used that stays put and comes off with warm water and a cotton wool pad really easily. I bought mine from Blincs website. It isnt cheap but it lasts for ages and ages. The only thing I dont like about it is that it is really runny especially when its new, so you have to put it on v carefully and wait for it to dry. But this is a downside Im prepared to put up with because its the only one Ive found in 35 years that works. Also the black is VERY black. The dark brown is less dramatic and Id say it looks black.

latrucha · 06/03/2012 15:34

I second Boots Botanics eve make up remover.

Also No7 waterproof mascara (I swim, haven't used the other.). Usedit for years and never had a problem with smudging.

Eliza22 · 06/03/2012 15:59

I use the No 7 Hot Cloth Cleanser at night to remove makeup. Some nights I just rinse it off or use the muslin cloth that comes with. It's a bargain 200ml at £5 if you have the No 7 vouchers to trade in. Otherwise, it's a tenner. In the morning I only use a clean muslin and hot water.

Mascara..... Have tried many. Cheap ones and Estée Lauder/Lancôme when I was working full time and had the cash to splash. Right now, I'm using Boots 17, new curling lash in a kind of leopard print packaging. It's really good. No panda effect, even after the gym. I've got poker straight lashes and yes it DOES curl 'em! £6.49p at Boots. Comes off easily with my Waitrose own brand eye makeup remover (£1.95p).

Lulumama · 06/03/2012 16:31

i've nearly finished the no 7 hot cloth cleanser and considering buying the soap & glory one next as i got a load of their skin care reduced after xmas and am v pleased with it

muslin cloths in home bargains... 69 p and v good, better than the one that came with the cleanser imo.

Eliza22 · 06/03/2012 17:49

lulumama agree! The cloth that came with the No7 was weeny and shrivelled up in the wash.

Home Bargain Muslims are excellent, wash well and the whole family uses them now instead of face clothes which start to smell horrid quite quickly. And....69p!!

fayeso · 06/03/2012 18:00

Eliza22 Do you mean Muslins....lol!!!!!

Jennyrosity · 06/03/2012 18:01

Clinique Lash Power mascara is the one you want. It's the only one I've ever used that doesn't leave me with panda eyes.

knitknack · 06/03/2012 19:23

It could be that because you're not removing your cleanser thoroughly it's what's making your mascara run...

Try sticking to your usual simple cleanser but using a hot flannel to wash it off, as others have suggested - much better for your skin and some exfoliation too!

I'd try NOT to use waterproof mascara if I were you, it'll be causing problems with your lashes (all that pulling/scrubbing to get it off)... Do you find the smudging is on your upper or your lower lashes? I'm still LOVING my NYC mascara (but you have to get that on ebay) or alternatively Max Factor lash extension. I don't have problems with either smudging.

Please let us know how you get on!
