Can over 40s wear skinny jeans?

Skinny jeans look good on other people, but could an early 40s (size 10) wear them without looking like 'mutton dressed as lamb'? If so, where would be a good place to get them?

Yes. 40 isn't old and skinny jeans aren't young 'n' trendy.

Dunno where is good to get them - I bought mine in Next, but they are a bit baggy around the waist (have fat arse & thighs so often get this problem). I think they do a high waist skinny jean, which I will buy next time to tuck in the muffin top.

Have heard very positive reviews of the £12 jeggings from Marks & Spencers...

HettyKett · 05/02/2012 13:39

Yes, of course you can wear them.

As to where to get them, shop around and go with the best fit just like any other jeans.

HettyKett · 05/02/2012 13:41

Jeggings are leggings not skinnies and should be worn treated accoringly.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 05/02/2012 13:46

I hope not, I just got some. Tried all the jeans in H&Ms in my sized and ended up with some washed jeggings/skinnies with a zip on my bum. Really weird but they fit like a glove, not what I was looking for.
It depends what you wear with it BTH, I don't look muttonish in it.
Same age and size.

noddyholder · 05/02/2012 13:48

I hope so I am over 40 and have been wearing them for about 10 years!

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 05/02/2012 13:49

[Hmm] I hope so,

kerstina · 05/02/2012 14:13

I do and I wear hipsters or low rise as I am slim enough too (size 6) I have some boden higher waisted jeans and they make me feel frumpy so just wear what you feel comfortable in not because someone decides it is right or wrong dependent on your age.

Clure · 05/02/2012 14:26

not too old at all. Try on some different styles to see what suits and flatters you. I like topshop baxters. Also got some River Island skinnies from a few years ago which are a nice fit.
I am size 6-8 with a bum and find these jeans suit - I'm also 5'1 and like the fact that both RI and TS come in shorter leg lengths. Also find that the £9 primark ones are ok for a stint.

I have struggled with footwear though. I like ankle boots but find the western style ones I like (with a small heel) seem to be too wide around the ankle and so the jeans look odd tucked in or look daft over the top of the boot! Any suggestions ladies?

SixtyFootDoll · 05/02/2012 14:27

I am 40 and wear skinny cords from gap and have just bought bright blue jeans for the spring.

Mrsrobertduvall · 05/02/2012 14:34

I am nearly 52 and wear them most of the time.
Appropriately of course.
I have just bought a black pair from Top Shop to the disgust of dd 15.

usualsuspect · 05/02/2012 14:35

I wear them and I'm old

simbo · 05/02/2012 14:40

I wear them and I'm older than you. I think it is more of a size than an age thing. I'm a size 10 too. Much depends on how you wear your clothes. Not with a bare midriff or plunging neckline, thus.

suebfg · 05/02/2012 14:53

Course you can. M&S Indigo do good skinnies as do Oasis.

chocolateshoes · 05/02/2012 14:58

what is all this about being over 40? there seem to have been quite a few threads along these lines recently and I am beginning to get worried! I'm 42 and wear skinnies.

Although I'm not a Boden girl at all, I got mine from Johnnie Boden - ie kids! I'm size 12 and got the longest kids pair available (there are some huge teenagers out there so not surprising you can get them big enough really). Much cheaper as not VAT on kids clothes plus there was a discount code at the time! They are v comfy and I think they look good!

emsyj · 05/02/2012 15:02

Maybe that's not the right terminology then HettyKett because the M&S 'things' are definitely closer to jeans than leggings - they are soft, but thick fabric and with seams and pockets that jeans would have. There have been quite a few threads on here about them but I haven't bought them myself - although may do when I am next in need of something of that type.

faustina · 05/02/2012 16:11

Another yes from me. I prefer low rise ones because I am 5' 4 and quite small framed. what's your budget Cloudminnow? If you're in or near London you might do well spending an afternoon in Selfridges trying on all the different makes. Gap also very good - esp new sexy boyfriend skinny jeans

MrsMcEnroe · 05/02/2012 16:14

Yes you can. I am very nearly 40 - 3 months to go!! - and size 6, and I wear ultra-skinnies from Gap (low-rise, "skinny legging jean" - they have a bit of lycra but are definitely jeans rather than jeggings and they look fab). I wear them 4 days a week (I work on the other 3 days) and they look great dressed up or down. 40 is the new 30 I say!

cece · 05/02/2012 16:23

Well I wear them, although not sure I should, and I am 45 and a size 18 Smile Shock

Eggrules · 05/02/2012 16:27

Bought a fab pair of super skinnies from Dorothy Perkins £15 last week. Stretchy, comfortable and I really liked the way they looked (lovely on).

Bienchen · 05/02/2012 16:36

Of course you can if the style suits you.

Hassled · 05/02/2012 16:38

I do, mainly because I have reasonably good legs and my logic is that they will distract from the car crash that is everything else.

My best ones are the Levi Curve skinnies - expensive, but have lasted really well.

Ifancyashandy · 05/02/2012 16:40

Yup. And French Connection ones are fab. As are Top Shop Jamies. I find their Baxters too baggy (size 10 /12).

Jcee · 05/02/2012 16:42

I hope so! I'll be 40 in may and after seeing a thread on here recommending them, i got some johnnie B skinnies in their clearance for £17 and they are fab. I am a size 10/12 and like chocolateshoes I just bought the largest size available - they fit really nicely and look great!

janmoomoo · 05/02/2012 20:25

I am 43 and wear them. Everyone wears them FFS!

The only time they look bad is on the.. ahem... larger lady when worn with a short top. Must be worn with long top.

cyb · 05/02/2012 20:32

ABSOLUTELY NOT

Drawstring trousers only
