Your thoughts on ageing... and who does it well

I saw Gillian Anderson on Graham Norton before Christmas and she looked absolutely stunning - she's in her 40s now and looks better than she did in her 20s. Kind of makes me less afraid of the ageing process myself...!

Who do think has aged well - celebs or anyone you know? Personally I think women get a hard time when it comes to ageing, as if men improve and women don't, so it's nice to have a bit of inspiration.

Helen Mirren, Susan Sarandon and Judi Dench are all fab.

RebeccaDanvers · 13/01/2012 13:55

Hmm love SS. Also Meryl Streep.

Wells it's fine if you're prepared to use a little anti ageing intervention as I'm sure all the above undoubtedly do, albeit subtly.

Actually, I thought GA was far too over botoxed in Great Expectations - nobody of her age has a forehead quite so eerily smooth...

molschambers · 13/01/2012 14:02

Agree with Bolter re GA. If the other three have had work done then it is subtle and effective. Like to think they haven't though...

EnglishMuffle · 13/01/2012 14:03

Francesca Annis and Gina McKee - FA well into her 60s but still looks fab, GMc late 40s and looks better than she did (IMO) 10 years ago.

I'm early 40s and currently sporting a face like a bag of spanners. Boo. I'll blame my children. And too much cake.

RebeccaDanvers · 13/01/2012 14:03

Her forehead wasn't smooth when she was on GM. Perhaps the botox had worn off...!

Yasmin le bon, although I am sure she must have had botox, still she looks gorgeous for 47.

Botticelli · 13/01/2012 14:07

Annie Lennox

worldgonecrazy · 13/01/2012 14:09

I don't think ageing is as scary when you actually get there, but ask me again in 15 years.

I do see a lot of slebs who are a similar age to me and get a bit jealous that they can afford the interventions to help keep them youthful. I'd love botox and a face lift when the time comes, but it would be a big expense for us.

kerstina · 13/01/2012 15:07

I think Rachel Weiss looks stunning now in her 40's much more than in her 20's.
Joanna Lumley looks good even if she has had botox ditto Nicole Kidman?
Anna Friel dismays me a bit as am sure she has had lip fillers and botox where as am sure she did not need to mess about with her beautiful youthful face.
Christy Turlington looks as beautiful still.
I don't like the look of obvious botox like Kylie,Danni Minogue think would look better to have naturally aged I don't like the plastic look.

chipstick10 · 13/01/2012 15:57

The secret to aging well is good bone structure. All the above have it. I do not and look like a bag of droopy fat spanners

Sidge · 13/01/2012 16:07

The Queen.

Sigourney Weaver.

Holly Hunter.

wheresthecake · 13/01/2012 20:26

Oral Brady (mistresses) looks amazing for 50!

wheresthecake · 13/01/2012 20:27

Ha ha whoops!
Obv meant Orla.......

KwaziiHunt · 13/01/2012 20:43

She's 50??? Blimey - I'd have put her about 37.

tethersend · 13/01/2012 20:56

I like the 'fuck it' approach of Brigitte Bardot.

Bunbaker · 13/01/2012 20:58

Orla Brady is beautiful. I think Lulu looks good.

southeastastra · 13/01/2012 20:58

i see quite alot of good looking older people in real life, i suppose alot of it is to do with fashion and not having old lady hair dos.

gillian anderson btw isn't old Grin

sad to see cindy crawford has gone in for the botox pillow face look though

molschambers · 13/01/2012 21:02

yy Orla Brady. My girl crush Grin

AKissIsNotAContract · 13/01/2012 21:02

Lulu's had far too much cosmetic surgery.

Bunbaker · 13/01/2012 22:10

I find it depressing that some of the "older" people referred to on her are only in their 40s. FGS that isn't old!

I would think of post menopausal women who look good as the menopause changes the body far more than the difference between 40 and 45 for example.

rhetorician · 13/01/2012 22:15

well it's going to happen - do it with grace and good humour and dignity and don't fight it (I am one of those women who looks better in my mid 40s than in my 20s - although I have 2 tiny children, so this probably won't last Wink)

talkingnonsense · 13/01/2012 22:24

Spanners are hard and proddy! You can't have a face like droopy fat spanners. You can have a cold hard bony face ( ie like a bag of spanners) or a droopy fat face ( like a bulldog? Or a lovely pillow?) but not a mixture. This has been annoying me for ages, not a go at you chopstick!

moondog · 13/01/2012 22:26

at BB's 'fuck it' attitude.
Yes indeed.
When I read Paris Match as an A level student back in the 80s, she looked like that then.
Dog ruff.

tethersend · 13/01/2012 22:47

Thing is, though, she's Brigitte Bardot- such amazing beauty, there's no way she could look as good as she used to.

In fact, nobody looks as good as she used to- so why should she bother? Fuck it Grin
