Your thoughts on ageing... and who does it well

I saw Gillian Anderson on Graham Norton before Christmas and she looked absolutely stunning - she's in her 40s now and looks better than she did in her 20s. Kind of makes me less afraid of the ageing process myself...!

Who do think has aged well - celebs or anyone you know? Personally I think women get a hard time when it comes to ageing, as if men improve and women don't, so it's nice to have a bit of inspiration.

Orla Brady for me too - amazing.

Madonna looked scary on Graham Norton. She didn't seem to engage but I think that was because she couldn't - she couldn't make the facial expressions that show engagement

JoantheFennel · 15/01/2012 16:08

Sophia Loren
Joan Bakewell
Maggie Smith
Emma Thompson

noddyholder · 15/01/2012 16:08

Emma Thompson is very beautiful

EssentialFattyAcid · 15/01/2012 16:09

Germaine Greer & Gloria Steinem

Orla Brady is stunning but no matter what she says she has had work done - botox and I'd say something done around her eyes too. She also has veneers on her teeth.

She appeared on breakfast TV recently saying she drinks lts of water pr some guff. Yeh right.

So yes, she looks amazing and is naturally a beautiful woman, but she has had help.

Funnily enough, I was wtaching Loose women the ther day (shoot me! It really was brain rot) and it suck me that despite Andrea whatshername and the little blonde one both being blatanyl botoxed, Janet S-P looked the most glowing and good for her age. She was never a looker, but definitely gets better with age and has a lovely complexion.

ValarMorghulis · 15/01/2012 16:23

Julie Andrews looks fantastic for her age.

as does Jaime lee curtis.

i am stunned that orla Brady is 50

ebbandflow · 15/01/2012 19:12

I think Victoria Wood has aged well, she looks right for her age and
Mel Giedroyc.

JoantheFennel · 15/01/2012 19:27

Sue Perkins as well

MabelOrange · 15/01/2012 20:49

Celebrities have the benefit of being interviewed under very sympatheticly lit TV lighting. And flash photography at premieres and on the red carpet when they've had their hair and make-up done.

MrsSchadenfreude · 15/01/2012 21:00

I am cultivating a fiiiiine set of jowls. Grin

boogiewoogie · 15/01/2012 21:39

Feel a bit dismayed when 40s is considered "old". Anyway I think that the following celebrities have aged gracefully and seem to embrace and make the most of their looks now rather than try to look younger iyswim.

Helen Mirren - Always so elegant on the red carpet
Charlotte Rampling
Catherine Deneuve
Jane Seymour
Shakira Caine
Susanna Hoffs

Yasmin Le Bon isn't really that old as she is still in her 40s but she is stunning too, an antidote to Cindy Crawford's recent pictures.

GeriManda · 15/01/2012 21:49

I though Brooke Shields looked lovely on JR last night. I know she's not old but we've seen her grow up. She had a normal forehead and seemed lovely

JoantheFennel · 15/01/2012 22:55

Jane birkin

KandyBarr · 16/01/2012 07:55

I second Janet Street-Porter, though not keen on her sense of style. I read somewhere she advocates seeking out the most junior stylist in the hair salon, because they will have a good sense of how to avoid looking dated.

Hatesqvc · 16/01/2012 10:00

Lulu really F*S Me of by saying her skincare brand has kept her looking younger, she is a botox addict. And as for the qvc presenters I bet they have fiddled with the needle, well maybe not Alison young, who hasn't aged gracefully ( vile woman).

MrsDollyLevi · 16/01/2012 10:11

Gillian Anderson isn't old.... What is she, 43?

I'm 50 this year. Some days, with makeup I look good. Others, with the same stuff on, I look shite.

What can you do? If we're lucky, we live long enough to age.

All of the above look good. They have the best of everything in terms of treatments etc. they should....it's a big part of their job.

Judi Dench is fascinating to me. Just radiant! Also, Pyllida Law who is Emma Thompson's mum. Amazing looking lady. The ones that annoy me are those like Lulu who claim to use their own skincare brand and look as they do. The woman is full of fillers! I'm not saying she doesn't look bad but no cream is going to keep you looking THAT perky!

MrsDollyLevi · 16/01/2012 10:12

"doesn't look good" I mean (Lulu)

RobinSparkles · 16/01/2012 10:21

Kim Catrall
Michelle Pfiefer
Meryl Streep looks like she has gorgeous skin but always has done IMO. Really glowing.
Emma Thompson looked good on JR, as did Brooke Sheilds.
Elle Macphereson.

They've all probably had a bit of "work" but if it's subtle and you don't end up looking like a weird cat, then it's ok!

niminypiminy · 16/01/2012 10:56

Just 10 days shy of my fiftieth birthday now I am completely Shock and also a bit Angry at women in their forties being considered old.

However, in addition to some of the nominations above, I love Tyne Daly: so beautiful, wrinkles, grey hair and all.

Yeah, I think she looks good. She's in her 50s and I think she looks well.

DonaAna · 16/01/2012 15:43

Meryl Streep.
I was going to say Isabelle Huppert but she looks kind of haggard these days.

dexter73 · 16/01/2012 19:15

Jodie Foster looks amazing and she is 49.
