Finding a scent for a picky DH?

So, here is my problem.

DH would like a scent for everyday, but doesn't normally wear any.

He loathes shopping at the best of times, and would rather gnaw his leg off than browse the perfume counters in John Lewis.

I am allowed to research, bring home card testers and occasionally take him directly to the shop, squirt one on each arm and run away.

A lot of the ones I like have come out too heavy and sweet on him (Boss Orange, Polo - red bottle, Gucci guilty).

I'm obviously picking wrong, but I'm clueless once I venture into the men's side.

all fresh, not 'new' and naff and unlikely to turn sweet.

floris santal has grass notes in it.

DH wears Acqua Di Gio aftershave and it smells quite sexy on him.
