there's another story in the press about allergic reactions to home hair dye. i dye mine roughly every 5 weeks, but am now a bit worried. don't normally do a patch test but will make sure i do from now on. but have a few questions...

  1. is a patch test for a home dye suficient to check for any reaction?
  1. is a reaction more likely with darker colours?
  1. anyone know of any ppd free home dyes? they seem more widely available everywhere else apart from the uk!

I started a thread on this yesterday here.

Patch test is ok but you need to leave it 48-72 hours to be sure as people have had reactions 3 days after using the dye.

Yes much more likely with darker colours - the darker the colour the worse the reaction apparently.

There are a few PPD free dyes - Smart Colour is one I think. Or you can use henna.

just found your thread, it's scary stuff! have looked at henna, not sure about the colours though, i'm ash blonde and just do my hair pretty close to my natural colour to hide the grey, all the henna shades look a bit too red for me.

Most people are not allergic so don't worry too much :) I would just stick with highlights so the dye doesn't touch your skin if you are worried.
