Scented candle
leather gloves
nice scarf
nice bottle of her favourite tipple

sunnysunchild · 18/11/2011 17:31

Make up a nice food hamper, with nice foody luxury treats, thats what my folks are getting. They don't want anything, but I know they would be really happy with some nice jam, chutneys, fancy cheese biscuits etc..

joanofarchitrave · 18/11/2011 17:38

Senior members of my family are getting 1. a nice cake tin 2. a reasonably appropriate novel and 3. the Lonely Planet guide to Libya (she's an adventurous traveller). I am also buying them each a pair of easi-grip scissors; this is actually aimed at one of them who has arthritis in her hands but in order to look less pointed I am going to get them all a pair and rave about how great they are (I use them myself).

And a school photo of ds, lucky old them.

MULLYPEEP · 18/11/2011 17:40

theatre/ concert tickets to something she'd like? You could add nice lunch or dinner?

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 18/11/2011 17:44

Concert tickets and dinner out somewhere lovely.
I did this for my Mum last year and it was really well appreciated as we don't often get to do anything just us anymore.

Stylelostinlabour · 18/11/2011 18:24

Some lovely ideas but as she has a kindle can't get book, she's a very young 60 and we lost dad 6 weeks ago so this is why it will be hard.

They always went to concerts so I can't do that as it would be a tad insensitive of me (but when it was the two of them this is what I did get)

As she is on her own she doesn't really eat at the moment and I know she'd hate a hamper, but I do a hamper for inlaws each year.

She has gloves, scarfs, bath stuff - maybe a dressing gown but not seen any nice ones though on my travels.

Just want to make it feel special even though it will be a really hard Christmas

My Mum love it the year I got her nice pj's from The White Company.

MULLYPEEP · 18/11/2011 18:30

Aw ok. I'm sorry about your dad. Will be hard for you all. Probably too early/ too obvious but maybe buy a course for a hobby she has always fancied, cake decorating, photography? You could go together?

Mum1369 · 18/11/2011 18:31

Could you book the two of you in for a spa day?

Stylelostinlabour · 18/11/2011 18:32

That is a lovely idea but we went through all the photo's the other day and she has the ones that she likes and she has them all on her laptop so goes through that all the time.

Gosh it's so hard to think of something that won't make her really upset.

Already taking her to a spa in January as a treat

ChristinedePizanne · 18/11/2011 18:32

One of those electric photo frame things pre-loaded with loads of photos of the family? That was one of the best presents we ever got my parents

ChristinedePizanne · 18/11/2011 18:34

Membership of something? National Trust/english heritage/local fabulous place?

Stylelostinlabour · 18/11/2011 18:34

Sorry I must sound really ungrateful! She is knitting at the moment so lovely stuff not sure if I could get her some stuff to store her needles in but not too cath kidston like. And I think it's her way of having to go out if she has to buy wool etc

OP posts:
trumpton · 18/11/2011 18:41

May I suggest These beautiful needles I tried a friends recently and they are so comfortable. They also do straight ones but I lust after the set. You can , of course, knit in the normal way with them and not just in the round.

Bless you , you sound so caring whilst you much be in so much pain yourself.

Stylelostinlabour · 18/11/2011 18:48

Trumpton - is it just a circular set or does it contain other needles? I'm probably being really thick!

It's hard but I just want to make sure I don't make it harder by getting the wrong thing

Keep them coming

OP posts:
trumpton · 18/11/2011 18:53

It is just circular but you can knit backwards and forwards in the normal way. The weight of the knitting hangs from the loop IFSWIM and is therefore more comfy.

They do sets of straight needles as well.

dilbertina · 18/11/2011 18:55

I am sorry about your Dad.

Does she happen to like gardening? I've got my mum a beautful recycled leather gardening apron this year, has big pockets and is long enough to kneel on.....and it's obscure enough that she can't possibly have one! (but only any good if she likes gardening obviously!)

Stylelostinlabour · 18/11/2011 18:55

Oh OK she has a circular one for doing snoods etc

Will look at the straight needles as well

TracyK · 18/11/2011 19:05

How about a day for getting your colours done? That's what I'm getting my mum.

TracyK · 18/11/2011 19:06

Or you can get a bouquet of flowers delivered every month for a year.

Queenkong · 18/11/2011 19:10

Take her for a fancy day out in London. A combination of the following - breakfast at the wolsely (for sleb spotting), spa treatment somewhere fancy, bit of shopping, afternoon tea, cocktails, west end show, dinner, night in a hotel.

moaninlisa · 18/11/2011 19:18
