Even if she has a circular needle the quality of them is just so good and the set has different size needles and you can change the points without disturbing the knitting already done. (ps. I am your Mum's age )

Sorry about your Dad. My Mum is also on her own after losing my Dad when she was only 58 and I know all about being careful to buy presents when things are sensitive and act as reminders.

White Company do lovely dressing gowns - both towelling and waffle. I've bought my Mum both in the past. I've also bought nice cashmere scarves etc. Do you have children - lovely framed photos are also nice.

Think you'll enjoy the spa. We went away for the New Year after my dad died as Mum didn't really want to do anything, especially with couples around. The spa was 98% females so was perfect!

Tickets for a show in the West End that you can go to together?

London day best idea so far. I personally would also welcome a selection of Space NK goodies but do admit I make it easy for my DH and DS by compiling a wish list on their website. Did put together one for my SIL last year though as a surprise after a tough year and seemed to go down well.

Does she like Spanish jamon? Brindisa in Borough Market do Spanish ham cutting classes. I think they do cheese and Spanish meat appreciation type classes too? For something different??

Stylelostinlabour · 19/11/2011 18:25

Oh no but hubby does !

Is she into baking, a cup cake decorating course?

Stylelostinlabour · 19/11/2011 20:10

Sorry - no great ideas but you sound so lovely and close. Wish I'd been close to my mum. Hoping your Christmas is as good as it can be.

smugtandemfeeder · 20/11/2011 09:02

What about some cashmere socks and cashmere hot water bottle cover from brora to go with the dressing gown.

TracyK · 20/11/2011 09:29

What about a nice portrait from an old photo of her and your dad? Or a charicature (sp)/funny one of your dad in favourite/amusing scene?

Stylelostinlabour · 20/11/2011 11:26

Thank you for all the lovely ideas just to update I have gone with an photo I have of them, dressing gown White company and elemis nourishing bath and some choc dad always bought (it'll make us both cry but sometimes its not a bad thing)

Sounds perfect. You've got me welling up and I don't even know you!

I hope your Christmas goes really well. Smile

Why don't you think about a massage or accuppuncture or something like that where people are looking after her. I imagine she might need something like that after what she is going through.
