35 and (slightly clueless)

So dh thinks I am too old to wear my
Converse and superga trainers.

We were out shopping - we don't live in the hippest area - and he pointed out that only the teenagers were wearing trainers and all the 'stylish' women were wearing skinnies and boots. Now I don't mind skinnies and boots but I at times think it has had it's day.

So my question is what are the alternatives to my trainers or do I tell him where to shove this which was my initial thought!

But seriously, any suggestions for alternatives as I do seem to live in trainers. They must be flat as running after ds and I wear heels in work and feet need a break.

Well I am in my 40s and wear converse - where I live it is pretty standard wear Wink

ChablisLover · 30/10/2011 20:23

Ah thank you.

There is only one other mummy at school
Who wears converse. The rest are into'sportswear' or mum boots!!!

I love my converse but told him the alternative would be ballet pumps (and he hates those even more!)

Plus I don't want to break my neck in heels and it Sunday afternoon and we were shopping what is the alternative?

Why is your dh suddenly a self appointed fashion expert?

LemonDifficult · 30/10/2011 20:29

I was going to start a thread about 'how old is too old for converse', I really want some. Most of all, I want some of those Ash trainers. I am 34. (I didn't start the thread cos in the end I thought 'Bollocks - your never too old for them!')

Wear them with pride. And skinnies and boots are probably over, it's just that's all I have in my wardrobe and I have no cash spare to admit it.

HotBurrito1 · 30/10/2011 20:29

Watching thread as I have this issue too (same age same trainers same doubts). Sorry I can't be any help. Although if my dh suggested I was too old he'd be sorry Wink

WitchesBrewIsMyFriend · 30/10/2011 20:30

Tell your DH to 'poke it' I wear my Converse with jeans, I also wear jeans and boots and god forbid I wear my sheepskin (ugg) boots.

You wear whatever you want to wear.

josephinebonaparte · 30/10/2011 20:30

I'm going to get some silver leather converse this winter. I'm 34. My husband doesn't get a say in what I wear.

iMemoo · 30/10/2011 20:31

I'm 37 and live in my Converse too :)

pushmepullyou · 30/10/2011 20:32

Converse are if anything older mum wear round my way. I am 34 (35 on Tuesday) and definitely don't consider myself too old for them. I do wear boots and skinnies, particularly in the winter, but think they're shortly to become the 'mum uniform' equivalent of 90's bootcut jeans and black block heeled boots

DameDoom · 30/10/2011 20:40

Converse is the only trainer anyone over 35 should wear in public ('cept for gym). However, they do look crap with a skinny jean though. You need soft worn in bootcut or casual boyfriend jeans ( if you weigh about 8 stone). 35 is certainly not too old - every stylish woman in Paris has a pair for zipping about in.

mamalovebird · 30/10/2011 20:46

I'm 34 (35 in a few months) and I would only wear converse trainers outside of the gym. My Dh has got no room to comment as he still dresses as if he thinks he's Damon Albarn in the Blur days.

wear what you want. It's you that has to wear it Smile

Specialbrew · 30/10/2011 20:51

I'm 39 and wear Converse occassionaly (but don't find them that comfortable tbh).

Your DH would have a fit if he saw me - I wear skinnies with puma hi-tops and don't care what anyone thinks! My DH wouldn't dare to comment on what I wear.

I live in London though, so may be that makes a difference - my SIL lives in a small village though and is almost paranoid about what she wears in case people talk about her.

Wear what makes you feel good!

Theala · 30/10/2011 20:56

"I'm 37 and live in my Converse too"

Me three. My only concession has been buying converse shoes instead of boots. I don't know why this is more acceptable, but it is in my head. Hmm

Xmasbaby11 · 30/10/2011 20:58

Who cares what other mothers wear? Surely the point of being 35 is that we don't have to worry about that!

35 = perfect age. Old enough not to care, not too old to look like mutton.

You may guess I am also 35.

Xmasbaby11 · 30/10/2011 20:58

old enough to look like mutton

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/10/2011 21:27

Agree that Converse with skinnies look bloomin' awful.

ChablisLover · 31/10/2011 11:44

Tried to reply lays night but bloomin app kept freezing

I shall continue wearing my converse loud and proud.

Also have pair of Nike hi tops that might also get an airing and our small village can talk. Even worse cos we are blow ins from another town!

I wear Converse ? with skinny jeans, no less! ? and I'm 36. Who cares what other people might think?

Matsikula · 31/10/2011 20:32

He should check out pictures of Phoebe Philo in hi- tops at the Frieze Art Fair if he reckons he is a style guru...

ladybird4 · 01/05/2012 13:28

I'm 50 and live in Converse, Skinnies worn with cashmere jumper or Jigsaw breton top! I would like an upgrade and am permanently on the look-out for Ash Virgin in taupe but they're always sold out in a 40. I don't give a hoot what anyone thinks - there's no way I'm ready for White Stuff (or should I say Per Una!) yet!

ladybird4 · 01/05/2012 13:30

as for Converse and Skinnies looking "bloomin awful" that really does depend on how tall and slim you are (or arent) :)

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 01/05/2012 13:41

I have superdry trainers instead of converse (well, they were given to me) but can't see a problem with wearing them.
I agree about the "mum uniform" of boots and skinnies. I wear what I feel comfy in, what's suitable for the weather and what's appropriate for the activity I'm doing - normally running around doing chores and sorting out lots of small children.

I've noticed that round here you get funny looks if you wear regular trainers without the rest of the gym gear, or especially a cap.

mrsebojones · 01/05/2012 20:03

I'm a petite 35 year old and wear blue converse!
And today I took purchase of a pair of the Ash mid wedge trainers. I love them - though admittedly I did say to DH that maybe I am experiencing a mid life crisis Blush
Fortunately my DH has more sense that to try and intervene in what I wear lol

GrossePopel · 01/05/2012 20:04

I'm 35 too... I'm caught in a jeans, white tshirt, converse rut. So I will watch this thread with interest.

GrossePopel · 01/05/2012 20:05

I have red, blue, green and white converse, so I do like to vary! Blush. But that's as varied as my wardrobe gets.
