Maternity Jeans - are they hard to find or is it just me?

Dear all

As I'm now 5 months gone, I'm bursting out of my trousers/jeans and have been looking for maternity jeans. I've bought a couple from Next that I really like in terms of the cut etc BUT every time I bend down/over, I end up showing the world my backside - not very practical. To be fair, the elasticated bit is meant to sit below the waist, but the other styles don't have anything to allow for belts anyway so I'm not sure I'd fare better with them.

So - are Next maternity jeans just not that great, or am I wearing the wrong type/size? Any brands you'd recommend, or thoughts on what I can do to rectify this problem??

I found Next maternity jeans a nightmare. I was permanently hauling them up. Zara ones have a lovely tight leg and an over the bump liner which I found to be the business. Especially with autumn coming in. You don't want draughts!

great tip, thank you! I am very disappointed by these Next jeans. I'll have a look at the Zara ones. I often forget about Zara, actually, and they do some good stuff generally.

i bought a pair of jeans from Seraphine (think they were about £50), but were worth every penny. Washed well, kept their shape and were incredibly comfy.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 04/10/2011 14:47

Next jeans are pure shite of the highest order. And I'm too fat for the likes of Zara, so I haven't worn jeans since May :(

bemybebe · 04/10/2011 14:47

Try H&M. I loved them.

nancythursday · 04/10/2011 14:48

My favourites were from gap, the under bump style.
I tried next and mamas & papas, but they didn't fit me.
My gap ones had a wide elastic band all the way round, rather than just sides on the other brands. I wore them from 4 months, up till 8 months. They were great and I could still wear them after the birth, till I lost a bit of weight.

I have a pair of Dorothy Perkins under bump jeans, my mum bought them in the sale when I was 1st pg.

They are the comfiest thing ever, I've worn them from around 20 wks and now they're pretty much the only thing that fits (am 37 wks) so they've had plenty of washing and still look good.

carciofi · 04/10/2011 14:51

I found Seraphine the best.

FrogGreen · 04/10/2011 14:51

I tried many pairs of maternity jeans and couldn't find any that were comfy and didn't fall down all the time. The best of a bad bunch were The Gap's overbump ones. I didn't get on with H&M trews but at least they were cheap. In the end I gave up and wore dresses!

glowfrog · 04/10/2011 14:55

I see more shopping around is required! :-D Thanks for all the tips. Am a bit scared by Gap as the ones I've seen are quite expensive - but if they fit properly, then... I'l have a look at Seraphine, too - didn't know that brand.

I've got TopShop over the bump jeans and practically live in them at the moment (36+3) I never did find a pair of under the bum jeans that didn't constantly feel like they were falling down.

SuchFunSuchFun · 04/10/2011 15:00

Blush under the bum BUMP jeans

Ayoop · 04/10/2011 15:02

Maternity jeans are generally shite, but Topshop are OK and Seraphine if you can splash a bit of cash

HandMini · 04/10/2011 15:03

I gave up on jeans and wore dresses too. Of the ones I tried, H&M were OK and Gap underbump ones were OK. Just not worth it though - leggings, dresses, cardigans and boots are the way to go for autumn/winter bumps. Make the most of wearing dresses before you're feeding and can't anymore!

littlegreenalien · 04/10/2011 15:05

If you want comfort, forget under the bump jeans.

I never found any that didn't feel like they were falling down or exposing some part of me.

Get a lovely pair of over the bump (stretchy panel at front) jeans - Autumn is here, you'll be wanting to keep warm and plenty of tops/jumpers will hide the stretchy panel bit. No-one will ever see that bit.

Imsolarpowered · 04/10/2011 15:06

Last time I went completely crazy with underbump jeans and spent the whole time hitching them up. Settled for Gap overbump which I lived in. Zara jeans were a disaster for me too. Now pregnant again, and will have to buy new pair of Gap ones as I tried on the old ones and they are stretched out of all recognition... can't believe I'm going to be that size again!
Dresses are probably the way forward!

HappyAsIAm · 04/10/2011 15:16

The best maternity jeans I had were some light wash ones about 4 years ago from Blooming Marvellous (which don't exist as a stand alone store now, but they are in Mothercare - not the same as they were by any stretch) and they not only stayed up, but looked decent too. I wore them to death. Now that I'm pregnant again, I want a dark rinse, and I can't find any dark ones that look even half way decent. I am going to try Gap - its my last resort, so fingers crossed!

glowfrog · 04/10/2011 15:18

Dresses are the solution I fear - for I am still a tomboy and prior to pregnancy wore trousers 98% of the time. That being said, I have been wearing the couple of dresses I own a lot over the past few weeks as I struggle with trousers and there's no doubting they're comfortable. At least it's winter and I can hide my aspirin-coloured legs under tights. :-D

And my wearing more dresses would certainly make my DH happy. _

Mamas & papas were best for me. I bought them off eBay and and as u only have 4 months to go I would not spend alot if I were u. I found I wore more dresses too- just less hassle and not worrying bout showing bum or bump as I was huge!! Good luck with pregnancy

pallymama · 04/10/2011 16:21

I loved the H&M ones, bought 4 pairs and lived in them! I found the bump band bit quite supportive too.

glowfrog · 04/10/2011 16:44

cheers, all!

Isabella Oliver ones are great - really stylish but they are very expensive - about £90 I think. However, I only bought one pair which lasted me my pregnancy (wore leggings the rest of the time) and then I sold them on ebay for £35.

HotBurrito1 · 04/10/2011 16:57

I had some H&M under bump ones last pregnancy. No leaning-over moonshine at all.

Uglymush · 04/10/2011 17:03

Had this problem at the weekend - cried in Mothercare!! Found some in New Look for £15.99 a pair. They are very comfy too :)

blueskydrinking · 04/10/2011 19:57

I've got two great pairs of maternity jeans. One was from Isabella Oliver and saw me through trimester 2 and 3 of my last pregnancy, all the way back down to normal size (was still wearing them with a belt as my emergency jeans - they adjust at the waist) and now I'm wearing them on the way back up again nearly 3 years and many, many washes later! Worth every penny.

The others are a pair of skinny jeans which I've just bought from M&P. The pair I had last time from there I bought in the wrong size and they kept falling down, but I'm completely in love with this pair. Their waistbands are all very different as well - I tried on one pair the other day which were beyond hopeless, really odd, useless waist band. But these over the bump skinnies are fab.
