notsofastmrbond · 22/09/2011 21:26

Bibbity, apologies I'm doing this by way of a straw poll of mnetters.

It's all down to genetics - can vary massively. You need to look at your mum to get an indication of when you're going to go grey as the characteristics of the hair on your head are controlled by an x-linked chromosome/the hormone oestrogen.

My mum didn't start going grey till she was well into her 50's

In my case it coincided with having children Hmm so 33 or 34

forrestgump · 22/09/2011 21:27

definatly went greyer after each child. My mum was white by 37! I am indenial at 36!

notsofastmrbond · 22/09/2011 21:28

Ok then, I was 31 when I found my first grey. I am just about to turn 49 and still have very little grey hair - less than 10%. My natural hair colour is medium brown.

Selks · 22/09/2011 21:29

about 40

GlaikitFizzog · 22/09/2011 21:29

17 :( but so did my dad and he's now bald. I'm currently shedding hair like theres no tomorrow after having DS, but I am hoping it will grow back

FreakoidOrganisoid · 22/09/2011 21:30

I've had a few since I was 19. Got a lot more at 25 when I was pregnant. Am now about 1/5 grey and am only 30 Sad

My mum went darker from brown to black with each child eventually going grey with no.4 at 45
I don't expect to follow in her footsteps tho as I'm very very blonde and haven't yet gone darker not even with DS - my dad was mousey coloured and don't know when he went grey just realised oneday at 55 that he was
DH is starting to go grey at 36

You need to look at your mum to get an indication of when you're going to go grey as the characteristics of the hair on your head are controlled by an x-linked chromosome

As a woman you have X chromosomes from your mum (either the one from her mum or from her dad) and from your dad (from his mum).

So if greying is controlled by X chromosomes you should look at your mum and your paternal grandmother.

Cathycat · 22/09/2011 21:34

I am actually surprised reading this. I'm 40 and have not a single one!

GlaikitFizzog · 22/09/2011 21:34

I feel your pain FreakoidOrganisoid most of mine are collected in a patch right at the front on my parting! The rest are liberally sprinkled everywhere else!

crazynanna · 22/09/2011 21:34

None yet (48 next week).
Strangely, the fanjo looks like it has a permanent sprinkling of talcum powder.Hmm

TrillianAstra · 22/09/2011 21:35

I found my first when I was about 24.

I still pull them out as they are few and fair between.

HarrietSchulenberg · 22/09/2011 21:35

Found first one at 34 but now 40 and have few but not really noticable.

ellangirl · 22/09/2011 21:35

27 in my case. I also think it might have a link with pregnancy hormones (other apparent side effects of pregnancy hormones in my case include bad hair loss and worsening vitiligo!)

GlaikitFizzog · 22/09/2011 21:35

Going by that then Trillian I am totally fecked!! If Philip Schofield can be the silver fox, I'm going to be a silver vixen! :o

LeBOF · 22/09/2011 21:36

None yet, but I think my mum was in her fifties.

VelvetSnow · 22/09/2011 21:37

Oh, thanks for reminding me OP.

I found my first one today - I'm only fucking 28!

Please tell me it's not all down hill from here...

MurunBuchstansangur · 22/09/2011 21:37

Haven't stopped dyeing my hair since I was 15. I'm 32 now and I've only ever seen one.

My Mum went very grey at about 45 IIRC. but she dyes her hair a lot too...

Bellavita · 22/09/2011 21:39

About 40.
