Shorts with tights...

I seem to have developed a bit of an obsession with the idea of wearing shorts with tights for the autumn.

I am 31 and think I may be having a 'I miss my yoof' crisis.

Please talk me out of it.

(unless you think it's acceptable, in which case, please point me in the direction of some smartish shorts, pref in grey Blush)

Man here - hope you don't mind. My DW wears this all the time (or with leggings) and, although over 35, looks great. (Not just me: she gets compliments).

So, OP, I say go for it.

DD looks fab in shorts and tights with boots as she is very leggy - she is 11 BTW.

alwaysrunninginheels · 22/09/2011 07:03

Oh i love this thread....as i too felt the calling for shorts and tights this winter. Opted for a fab pair from whistles, dark navy with little spots.....heading quickly towards 40 and adopting the policy "what the hell"!!! I figure my legs are my best feature.....i lived in shorts and tights at uni and am going to wear them with thick navy tights and i love how it looks. I think when you feel you look good you look good(ok i am ignoring all the folk who wear clothes that i think- "why did a friend not tell you about that outfit....") BUT i have run the outfit past a couple of seriously well groomed pals...and they loved it!!!

mamaGool · 22/09/2011 09:29

I say go for it too. Flat-fronted though for anyone with a hint of tum like me

Ephiny · 22/09/2011 09:47

I think it's more to do with figure than age actually - don't think it would have suited me at any age to be honest (I'm short with 'sturdy' legs, shorts are never the most flattering thing for me!), but if you're leggy and still slim at 40 then why not!

MistyMountainHop · 22/09/2011 09:54

i am 31 and wear this look

even with - Shock - FRAYED DENIM shorts!

wear what you want FFS!

PippiLongBottom · 22/09/2011 09:57

I wear this type of outfit pretty much every day. I wear litle dresses too with brogues and cardi's that make me look like Rose West.

I am 36 but I am a stjooooooodent.

PippiLongBottom · 22/09/2011 10:02

My shorts are very short too. None of these knee length ones, they are less flattering IMO.

I have the confidence to wear them and they seem to suit my hourglas figure. I just wear a black vest and then my baggy cardi open. I also have the skater dresses from Topshop which I wear with brown broques and a brown waist belt and black opaques.

All the young students on my course thought I was 10 years younger than I am.

MistyMountainHop · 22/09/2011 12:10

i bet you look lovely pippi

PippiLongBottom · 22/09/2011 12:30

Thanks Misty, that is very kind. I bet you do too in your frayed denim ones. Unfortunately my user name is true and my bum is too 'low' to wear the little denim ones.

Just thought I'd update... Took heart from all the 'just do it' posts and, well, just did it! Found a pair of tweed shorts in Whitestuff that fitted perfectly. Worn with charcoal grey leggings and crisp White shirt. Boots were an issue though. Just couldn't decide what matched so went for these (have had them for years) store.drmartens.co.uk/p-6401-dr-martens-new-auth-wedge-zip-calf-boot-.aspx but didn't quite feel right.

So am now on look out for perfect boots!

Have seen these boots www.kew159.com/fcp/product/womens-clothing/shoes-and-boots/Oakland-Boot/99902771?colour=brown which I love but they're still not right.

Thanks for all your great comments btw. Helped with confidence! Smile

I still have the calling for this outfit and I turned 40 this year! If my husband thinks I look ok, then I'll go with that, he's very honest! I'm on the look out for a tweed paid right now!

AgeingFop · 04/09/2012 07:01

Go for it. It's a good look. I'm sure DH will be honest with you.

There's lots of shorts around at the moment. Some tweed, as well. H&M, Next, New Look - Pink!, and so on.

choceyes · 04/09/2012 09:58

I'm going to give this look a go this autumn! I think it would look great on a petite frame like me, 5'2 and I have skinny legs and no bum, so will give a bit of balance.
I love those H&M ones you linked to AgeingFo will check them out!

My 4yo seriously rocks this look Grin

IShallPracticeMyCurtsey · 04/09/2012 10:32

Anyone can wear this look, even a granny can wear this look, PROVIDED they have decent legs and have selected their materials carefully. OP go for it. I've worn shorts and tights for years and years now, ever since formal shorts first became a 'thing'. They're more flattering to my legs than a short skirt. I'm 29 and will no longer be doing the denimn cutoff + opaques thing, but I have a pair from Topshop that are nice with a pale denim shirt tucked in, good quality tights, and brogues or heels.
