Shorts with tights...

PicknMix · 20/09/2011 23:33

I seem to have developed a bit of an obsession with the idea of wearing shorts with tights for the autumn.

I am 31 and think I may be having a 'I miss my yoof' crisis.

Please talk me out of it.

(unless you think it's acceptable, in which case, please point me in the direction of some smartish shorts, pref in grey Blush)

i love the tweedy shorts, thick tights and biker boots look!

Ifancyashandy · 21/09/2011 11:21

Mine are like yours Aitch, short and tweed. I'll stop wearing this look when Mary Portas does!

And Saggy, was only teasing with the saggy name / saggy lady comment. Why, you're on S&B so you must be fabulous!

sue52 · 21/09/2011 11:35

I think that look is great on the tall, slim and much as it grieves me to say it, the under thirties. You are only just over thirty so if I were you I'd give it a go to get it out of my system.

MrsVoltar · 21/09/2011 11:44

I don't think age should really dictate what you wear but I couldn't wear shorts & tights/leggings, am late 30's though.

If your 'style' is edgy or very trendy would probably be ok, on our school run, there is a 30 ish mum who is very trendy and always has latest looks, she looks fine in this.

But, there are also a couple of other mums have been wearing them, both early 40's and just doesn't look right, their style is classy, expensive looking and the shorts thing doesn't work with that, IMO.

noddyholder · 21/09/2011 11:46

I am 46 in november. I have a tweed pair which i wear with tights shoe boots and a big jumper. I really like them but my legs are still good compared to teh rest of me!Grin

Ephiny · 21/09/2011 12:37

I think it can look quite cute on the right person - I work in a university and some of the students seem to favour this look. However just because it looks good on slim, leggy 18 year olds, doesn't mean it'll work for me! It needs to be very short shorts though, the knee-length ones just look weird IMO - but that of course further restricts who can get away with it...

AitchTwoOh · 21/09/2011 14:02

no knee length, about three inches above the knee here.

TheSandstoneCat · 21/09/2011 14:15

Love the look but not confident enough to wear it this time round. Saw a very chic, elegant woman in my local Carrefour yesterday who looked age appropriate(?) and super sophisticated wearing shorts and tights and she was the other side of 50 IMHO. Guess it proves that it's not age but style that matters ......

MurunBuchstansangur · 21/09/2011 14:19

I live in a town where you can choose between select and new look. Someone please do a linky to some grown ups shorts?

Ifancyashandy · 21/09/2011 14:22

My outfit was a bit like [[http://www.asos.com/Vero-Moda/Vero-Moda-Suedette-Lazer-Cut-Shorts/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=1855108&cid=2623&Rf900=1568&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=20&sort=-1&clr=Black this but grey silk t/shirt and biker boots.

Ifancyashandy · 21/09/2011 14:23

this

not sure why that didn't work.

notanumptyalways · 21/09/2011 14:24

I'm in my mid twenties and am leaving that style alone now. I was wearing it up until a year or so ago but it is too young and a bit out of date even for me.

notanumptyalways · 21/09/2011 14:25

Actually shandy's look in that link is fine, I was thinking the denim shorts style that has been around the last couple of years.

AitchTwoOh · 21/09/2011 14:28

yup that is JUST what i look like. Grin

I know I am far too old for this look (much as I love it) I have a friend whose sister is 49, she is a creative type and makes hats and teaches milinery for a living. She wears tweed shorts and thick knitted tights and looks really nice.
She is slender and long legged and doe have that slightly artistic look about her which helps her carry it off.

thecatatemygymsuit · 21/09/2011 14:57

I love this look, especially tweed/wool shorts, and I am north of 40 Shock. But I do have the legs for it Wink... if anyone can link to some good tweed shorts or similar I'd be extremely grateful.

Ifancyashandy · 21/09/2011 15:05

Got mine in Zara but can't see them online.

OllieinOrange · 21/09/2011 15:09

Kew 159 has some but shape is a bit strange imo here

H&M usually has them in around now too?

thecatatemygymsuit · 21/09/2011 15:40

Thanks shandy, I will check out Zara.
Thank you Ollie, the Kew shorts are lovely fabric, although not sure how flattering they will be on... agree about the slightly odd shape.

scootergal · 21/09/2011 21:53

ha i bought a lovely pair in a wear and returned them as didnt have the courage - they were black matte silk look ...and would have been luverly with a nice shirt ....
this tread has given me the courage to actually try em on! I love the look, but wasnt sure if it would be too young ...am going to try rock it too!

mythical · 21/09/2011 22:13

if this is the idea,or something around it, i like it :)

OracleInaCoracle · 21/09/2011 22:17

H&m have some fab pairs!

stressheaderic · 21/09/2011 22:23

I'm 31 and I love this look still, and it's warm too. Boots/pumps MUST be flat, tights must be black or grey and woolley or cable and shorts must be tweed or cord. A sheer blouse works well with them.
I'm 5'6 and my legs are the best bit of me .
A warm, comfy yet stylish look for a night out.

Ifancyashandy · 22/09/2011 00:20

Ooh Mythical, I think those shorts are too baggy. And there needs to be more leg on show - I think it looks better with ankle/biker boots or lace up brogues. Maybe it would look better with opaque tights?
