How do you do your makeup.... ?

SummerLeaps · 20/08/2011 12:21

I am always fascinated when i see women in public applying makeup and always want to watch how they do things. I never really 'learned' how to do it (and am actually going to a makeup lesson soon).

My DH always says that i do makeup in a way that does not look as if I am wearing it, which was meant to be a compliment, but I would love to be someone who can really transform her face with it. This is what I do;

dob concealer
foundation all over
brush eyebrows with toothbrush (dedicated toothbrush for (thick) eyebrows, not use my toothy toothbrush :) )
pluck a hair or two (eyebrows)
dob two spots of lipstick on lips, then merge colour with finger
blush with either lipstick if lazy or actual blusher (usually terracotta coloured)
mascara on top lashes only because it always runs.

very simple. If I am really making an effort then I will do a powder compact on top of foundation, shade eyes in in brown and neutral shades and would do lipliner but I never get that right.

I generally look a little pale and ordinary, but i honestly do not know what else to do. I kind of 'colour myself in' really.

Would love to know what other people do!

  1. Moisturiser or primer.
  2. dab foundation on nose, apples of cheeks, chin and forehead.
  3. blend with foundation brush.
  4. kohl eyeliner top and bottom.
  5. mascara, top lashes only.
  6. blusher, apples of cheeks extending up cheekbone.

I have dark hair so don't colour eyebrows.

That is my everyday routine. My "Nice" makup routine is longer and more complex!

1- eye primer to lids.
2- light eyeshadow over lids and in crease

  1. darker shadow outer half of lids.
  2. darker colour winging out and in crease
5- blend with soft eyeshadow brush 6- correct eyeshadow shape with cleansing wipe 7- pencil kohl lower lid 8- gel eyeliner upper lid and winged out 9- mascara 10- foundation primer 11- foundation with brush 12- highlighter/shimmer brick winged across cheekbones. 13 - blusher on apples of cheeks 14- lipgloss

It sounds as if you must have beautiful eyes Cats if you make a feature of them. :) Like the idea of sparkly eyeliner alot. Sometimes I use a silvery blue shadow that I got for a 60s themed party that seems to make my eyes stand out more. I like it.

oh, and lastly false lashes if dressing up properly.

SummerLeaps · 20/08/2011 12:29

Does primer really work? i had some i got from a Vue party and was never sure. ?

Moisturise, foundation, touch éclat under eyes and on any blemishes. Powder. Bronzing powder. Liquid black eyeliner on top lids and in outside bottom corner. Lashings of mascara, touch of pink lip gloss. For nights out liquid eyeliner thicker on top and put it on bottom too. Sometimes wear false eyelashes if big night out.

anon2011 · 20/08/2011 12:31

I swear by urban decay primer potion for eyes. I am very into dramatic eye makeup for "dressing up". this is the best thing to keep your colours intense and prevent creasing or slippage.

I use laura mercier foundation primer. My foundation tends to slip of during the day without it. I only ever use it when putting on "nice" makeup and my tube is still going from June 2009. You only need a bit. I hear the smashbox primer is good, but pricey.

Catsmamma · 20/08/2011 12:32

summerleaps my eyelashes are one of my best features when mascara-ed :D

that and thin wrists and ankles

the rest...not so much!

And you should get some sparkly eyeliner, it's fab!

cyb · 20/08/2011 12:33

I like lashes very dark and full - I like diorshow blackout.

anon2011 · 20/08/2011 12:39

I think you need to be careful with sparky line - ok if part of a dramatic look, if more low key looks a bit "12yr old, claire's accessories"!

I agree with doing founmdation after eyeshadow - you can the give your cheeks a quick wipe to deal with any fallout. Doe anyone have any recommendations for eyelash curlers. I hear good things about the shu uemuru ones - worth the money?

Catsmamma · 20/08/2011 12:42

oh indeed anon i do a very thin sparkly line for day wear!

also stick to neutral-ish sparkles, (gold/silver) leave the neon and electric colours to the young'uns.

RoxyRobin · 20/08/2011 12:44

In the dark judging by the results sometimes.

MissBeehiving · 20/08/2011 12:44

Cheek tint

Eyeliner - grey smudgy
Mascara
Liptint

DamnDeDoubtance · 20/08/2011 12:46

Moisturizer. touch of clarins flash balm.

Foundation, eyeliner on upper lids, eyebrows, eyeshadow (neural and green on the lower lid, I LOVE green eyeshadow.)

youtube vidoes are the way forward! They have some great makeup tutorials.

Ifancyashandy · 20/08/2011 13:12

Moisturise.
Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser
Touché Éclat under eyes
Strobe cream on cheekbones/browbones
Loose powder dusted on / blended off
Bronze under cheekbones / across forehead
Blusher on 'apple' of cheeks
Lip gloss

Eyeshadows / eyeliner in evening.

No mascara BUT I've got eyelash extensions!

cyb · 20/08/2011 16:05

MissBehiving I do my concealer last as it finishes off round my eyes really well, and just 'cleans up' the area IYSWIM

Also means I dont put too much on as I can see whats really needed

Chocchip88 · 20/08/2011 17:17

Day to day:
Moisturise
Foundation applied with fingers
Concealer if needed
Brush on powder
Fill in gaps in eyebrows due to teenage over plucking
Curl eyelashes (Shu uemura def worth the £)
Mascara on top only
Then blusher and lip balm.

Night time similar but will add eyeshadow primer, 3 different shades of eyeshadow, more eyeliner. I'll use my 'good' foundation and apply with a brush and finish off with some Bobbi Brown shimmer brick and lip gloss.

I bought a Bobbi Brown make up book when I was about 18 and found it really helpful.
