How do you do your makeup.... ?

SummerLeaps · 20/08/2011 12:21

I am always fascinated when i see women in public applying makeup and always want to watch how they do things. I never really 'learned' how to do it (and am actually going to a makeup lesson soon).

My DH always says that i do makeup in a way that does not look as if I am wearing it, which was meant to be a compliment, but I would love to be someone who can really transform her face with it. This is what I do;

dob concealer
foundation all over
brush eyebrows with toothbrush (dedicated toothbrush for (thick) eyebrows, not use my toothy toothbrush :) )
pluck a hair or two (eyebrows)
dob two spots of lipstick on lips, then merge colour with finger
blush with either lipstick if lazy or actual blusher (usually terracotta coloured)
mascara on top lashes only because it always runs.

very simple. If I am really making an effort then I will do a powder compact on top of foundation, shade eyes in in brown and neutral shades and would do lipliner but I never get that right.

I generally look a little pale and ordinary, but i honestly do not know what else to do. I kind of 'colour myself in' really.

Would love to know what other people do!

Sunblock
Primer
Foundation
Eyebrows coloured in
Concealer on eyelids
Eyeshadow
Gel or liquid eyeliner (if going out in evening eyeshadow stronger and kohl before eyeshadow and gel on top, really lasts that way)
Mascara - one coat only, loathe fat spidery lashes look
Bronzer under cheekbones
Highlighter on top of cheekbones and under brows
Blusher on apple of cheeks
Concealer under eyes (thought was only one who put it on last cyb)
Lip gloss

Takes 5 mins and can do it without a mirror (apart from the gel eyeliner bit), takes a bit longer at night because take extra care with eyeshadows and eyeliner.

GetOrfMoiCarbsClaire · 20/08/2011 17:28

Don't use foundation brushes, tried them once and made me look like an Estee Lauder make up counter assistant (i.e. painted lady)

brighthair · 20/08/2011 18:02

oooh where to start?! I love make up, and change all the time

at the moment

moisturise, then Almay nearly naked foundation in Ivory
Illuminating concealer under eyes and MAC prep and prime on lid
Illamasqua concealer on blotchy bits, loose powder on nose, forehead and chin
Benefit Coralista Blush

eyes - always a light shadow up to brow, usually Urban Decay Sin. Then another colour on lid and one up to crease. Maybelline gel liner on top lid and flicked out. Maybelline lash catcher mascara. George blonde eyebrow pencil

I love these eyeshadows - MAC woodwinked, mulch, sumptuous olive, coppering, paradisco
also Urban Decay - I have Alice in Wonderland Set, I heart NY set and Book of shadows 2

brighthair · 20/08/2011 18:03

forgot evenings

I add in Philosophy the Present primer, glitter on eyes (depends what eyeshadow I have on) and Benefit High beam on cheekbones. I swap the MAC prep and prime for the Holy Grail that is Urban Decay eyeshadow potion primer

knitknack · 20/08/2011 18:11

I've stopped lining my lower eyes (I use a laura mercier block eyeliner on top) I've found it looks much 'fresher' (on me! I'm not suggesting it doesn't on others)

And yes, shu eumuru curlers are great, as are shesido (sp?!)

KimberlyClark · 20/08/2011 18:27

i am stuck in a rut :(

currently do:
concealor on blemishes
mineral foundation
bronzer on cheekbones
blush on apples
comb eyebrows and pluck if required
teeny little v of brown eyeliner
mascara
lip gloss

yawn :(

bittentothequick · 20/08/2011 18:28

Daytime - mascara.
If I'm going out - mascara, blusher, maybe under eyes stuff.

Hmm, that's less than everyone else so far. Lucky for me I am naturally stunningly gorgeous.

KurriKurri · 20/08/2011 18:37
  1. cleanser, toner and eye refresher
  2. moisturizer and eye cream
  3. Colour calmer, then concealer
  4. foundation
  5. powder
  6. blusher
  7. eyeshadow
  8. Eyeliner
  9. Eyebrows
10. mascara 11. lipliner 12. lipstick.

I put liquid things like moisturizer, foundation, colour calmer etc. on the side of the ball of my left thumb, then pick up a bit with the little finger of my right hand and dab it on my face little by little - its easier to add to than take away.

I was told that the aim should be for people to say 'you look nice' not 'your make up looks nice'.

KurriKurri · 20/08/2011 18:38

That's for going out, - most of the time I don't wear make up, or just a bit of lipstick.

akaemmafrost · 20/08/2011 18:44

I don't wear make up every day, just when I go out so its a big deal. So:

Cleanse and exfoliate, moisturise. Wait a bit.

Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, Clarins Beauty Eye Flash Balm

Foundation, Clarins firming.

Touche Eclat, undereyes.

Black or Brown eyeliner on lower lids and smudged along top lid.

Bourjois Pink/Gold eyeshadown palette depending on day or night.

Maybelline Black or Brown Mascara.

Body Shop Bronzer as blusher but sparingly, I don't really suit blusher as such, just to add a bit of colour.

Clarins lip balm, clear.

I prefer more colour on eyes and neutral lips. No matter what colour I wear on my lips I look like The Joker.

TheMagnificentBathykolpian · 20/08/2011 19:06

I don't often wear it.

I am wearing it today, we're expecting guests this evening.

I exfoliated and moisturised, then put foundation on, then powder. Then I did my eyes - v light brown all over the socket - to the eyebrows. Then wiped it off - sounds daft I know Grin but it's a gentle wipe that leaves just a tiny hint. then swept a darker brown over the bottom half and out to the corners. then a darker colour right at the bottom, then blend. then a light brown under the eyes, and blend, then a darker brown and blend. then mascara top and bottom. eyes end up looking like this

then cheeks - suck cheeks in and sweep dark blusher along cheekbones. sweep darker blusher in the dimple just below the cheek bone, sweep a light blusher above the cheekbone and blend.

lips - a dab of gloss in the middle of the bottom lip and blend. gives a sexy wet lip look Grin

lubeybooby · 20/08/2011 19:12

foundation
touche eclat
light application of powder
bronzer (little bit)
blusher on apples on cheeks
cream eyeshadow all over
purple or brown eyeshadow from outside to halfway in
eyeliner
eyebrow definer (have really sparse stupid eyebrows)
eyelash curlers
mascara
more mascara
little bit of lip gloss

If I really need it to last longer I use urban decay primer too and if going out at night use a lipstick rather than gloss

PollyRoxs · 20/08/2011 20:55

I am loving this thread being a total make up junkie, I swap and change on a regular basis but at the moment daily I wear

Nivea tinted moisturiser
Benefit posie tint on cheeks applied on a blusher brush
Urban decay eye liner in lucky (bronze brown) shade under lower lashes
Calorie 2000 mascara in black upper and lower lashes
Dusting of mineral veil over t zone
Une tinted lip balm or just Vaseline for lip shine

ComradeJing · 21/08/2011 04:12

I've just totally changed how I do my make up. For the day I now:

  • cleanse etc
  • foundation by cosmetics a la carte/tinted moisturiser by clinique applied with hands.
  • chanel auto eye liner applied under upper lashes (does that make sense?)
  • Benefit Posytint applied with fingers then a bit of laura mercier or bobbi brown cream blush
  • Mac mascara
  • pink lipstick. I've got a strong natural lip colour so either something that just adds to that or a bright/strong colour.
louby86 · 21/08/2011 04:27

I second the bobbi brown make up bible if you're looking to do something different as it has loads of different looks and tips in it and goes through them step by step. My make up looked loads better since getting that!

For daily make up I do the following:

  1. Moisturise, prime t zone and eyelids
  2. Apply concealer and then foundation
  3. Usually use a natural duo eyeshadow
  4. Volumising mascara
  5. Very natural lipgloss, usually use mac lipglass or the lancome one in the silver tube
  6. Blusher last and then blot powder to keep me shine free for the rest of the day!
CountBapula · 21/08/2011 06:40
  1. Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser
  2. Bronzer (Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Bronze)
  3. Cream blush (Mac Ladyblush)
  4. Powder blush to get cream blush to stay put (Revlon matt blush in Perfectly Peach)
  5. Concealer (using a Revlon one at the moment)
  6. Eyelash curlers
  7. Mascara. Lots of.
  8. Chapstick medicated. Best lipbalm ever.
  9. Pale beigey/pink lipstick. Either Nars in Belle de Jour or a Sephora one.

If going out, eyes are as follows:

  1. Laura Mercier cream eyeshadow in gold
  2. Layer one of the medium colours from the Shimmer Brick over the top
  3. Shade outer corner and socket with darkest colour in Shimmer Brick
  4. Highlight browbone with lightest shade from Shimmer Brick
  5. Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner in Espresso (top lashes only)
  6. Shitloads of mascara.
prolificwillybreeder · 21/08/2011 10:21

Soap and glory dewy something or other moisturiser
Eyeshadow- cream then highlighted with a smoky brown.
Eye liner top and sometimes bottom occasion depending. In brown.
No. 7 lash adapt mascara
Beauty flash balm

Caffeine eye roll on concealer
Powder-I think it's ageing me, but I need something. Any ideas?
Don't feel I need blush I have red cheeks anyhow!
No.7 moisture drench lipstick in pink lemonade. Feels like lip balm.

Soopermum1 · 21/08/2011 15:01

moisturise
concealer on blemishes if required
curl eyelashes
eyeliner on top line only
