If you HAD to buy an outfit for a September wedding, what would you buy?

I'm going round and round in circles looking for a wedding guest outfit for my SIL's wedding in Sept. The issue is I just have no idea what to wear, I haven't been to a wedding in years!

So, what would you wear if you were me? All size, height issues aside.

I would buy a maxi dress made of thick material so I could sneakily wear leggings underneath it if it was cold.

For me to go to a September wedding? No budgetary constrains (within reason)? Mmm, will look.

When I went to my bil's wedding in September my choice of outfit was influenced by being 12 weeks pg with my third child. I wore some flowing brown trousers with stretch, a light coloured t-shirt and a brown flouncy cotton cardigan thing over it with smart bag and boots.

No real budgetary constraints - I'm not talking Chanel, but personally I can probably go up to the £500 mark if need be...

I've got a dress, a boden one, the Piazza dress in the green silk, lined up for my SIL's wedding in September (are you actually me? Do I have multiple personality disorder? )

But I don't know if I'll keep it and use it.

Its tricky. Its a bad time of year weather wise (though we are in the uk here) and its a bad time of year to buy anything because its all sale crap and bollocks so I'm at a bit of a loss.

Deep down I think I'll be better off with a shift dress/jacket combo and I think the green dress will go back.

I'm just going to file that one away in "another time when you have too much time on your hands" and deal with it in July/August me thinks...

TattyDevine, that's how I feel. I had a quick squizz in HOF last weekend and was near blinded by the crap they shove out on the shop floor at sale time. I swiftly turned on my heel and decided to come back when the sales are over!

what type of wedding? church and venue after or all in one place? i have my eye on a lovely red dvf dress but i dont think i could wear anything over it iyswim.

I love the DVF dress. It's all being held in one venue (a hotel), yes, there'll be an evening reception with dancing as well.

So the outfit really needs to cover all bases. We're staying at the hotel, so theoretically I could change for the evening, but would rather not.

I'm 29, fat (but losing weight, am a 14 at present, will hopefully be in a 12 by Sept) and ridiculously short. Gosh I sound good!

so you could probably get away with no jacket. any particular colour or style you prefer?

Bloody hell, it's dire out there. I think if I had to buy now for september I'd go dull and layerable. Simpleish dress / shift and jacket.

Herbietea - the dotty p's dress is lovely, looks very Coast-ish. But I'm worried about being dressed the same as one of the other (slimmer, prettier) guests. Argh. What a nightmare.

The first DP dress is lovely - I would definitely buy it if I liked my legs.

The Coggles thingy that Lemon linked is very cool but I'd worry about being hot if there was dancing.

LemonDifficult, alas I fear I could not pull it off. But appreciate it's a fab style and would look amazing on someone with more style than I!

Mumatron - I like. And have been perusing Monsoon this evening. I like a few of their dresses but am afraid of appearing mumsy and surburban (which of course I am!) amongst SIL's hip and trendy PR colleagues!

TrillianAstra - I HATE my legs, but really, really want to wear a dress (for once! I never wear dresses) so on this occasion I might just hope for the best. I'll make sure they're nicely tanned and buy some fantastic heels - a wise fashion-forward friend has assured me that not many leg-issues can't be fixed by a pair of fab killer heels. I'll have to trust her....!

If you are 29 you want to be looking French Connection (great sale on just now) and perhaps some of the concessions in debenhams as they have a sale on too.

If you want to go for something a bit more "special" how about vivienne westwood anglomania? Have s play around on Mywardrobe.

I do like the dress, but feel it would just serve to accentuate every lump and bump. Of which there are a few, sadly!

Thanks Geordieminx. I've well and truly lost my way where style is concerned. Although I'm 29 (which I know is young), I feel I just cannot pull off what I see my (single, thin) contemporaries wearing.

yes they do, the fabric is quite thick and can hide alot ime and you can always get spanxed

You need to set yourself a whole day aside, no kids, head to the nearest big town, with a JL or Debenhams, and grab as many dresses as you can carry. Even ones that you are not sure on, try them all on. Relax, take pics using mobile if necessary.

You will find something.
