Did anyone NOT like their engagement ring?

Usually the engagement ring threads are full of mnetters gushing about how much they love, love, love their engagement rings. My df chose mine as a surprise and I'm not sure it's what I'd have chosen. Just wondering if I'm the only one!

I chose my own - well, I tried it on with dh there, wrote down the number and size as dh would have got the wrong one, then he said he'd buy it when he was ready to ask me!

Then I left him to it.

I don't wear either the engagement or my wedding ring now and haven't since I've had the kids. The wedding finger on that hand has changed shape (not sure why the other side hasn't?) so need to get them altered.

My DH chose mine, I love it because he chose it, it is a diamond solitaire so he played it safe but I love the fact he went and bought the ring. If we had chosen it together I may have gone for something different perhaps with little stones down the side but I don't really think about it.

Do you actually not like it or it just is different from what you might have chosen?

No, it's not just you. I adore the engagement ring my dh got me, but the one I had from my exh was not me at all.

Whoneeds, I suppose I really don't like it. It's a very modest diamond solitaire in a very dull setting that doesn't fit well next to my wedding ring. In fact we had a lot of difficulty finding a wedding ring that fitted next to it to any degree and I had to get a wedding ring that wasn't what I wanted because that was the only one that looked vaguely okay with it.

So it's a bit sad really, I don't like either very much and wanted to have rings that I loved like everyone else. I got married years ago and whenever they catch my eye I still look at them and think that I don't like wearing them.

DH chose mine and I absolutely love it- its not the biggest, most expensive or flashiest but it is 'me' and he chose it and thats what matters to me.

It could do with a good clean though!

could you get the stone reset...perhaps with additional stones?

my aunt had this done, she had two extra diamonds mounted either side after she had her two DCs.

Well, I have suggested having it reset but dh said it would spoil it!

Don't mean to drip, drip but when we were talking about getting engaged I did ask df2b not to think about a diamond solitaire because my sister has an absolutely amazing solitaire engagement ring (people ask her if it's a real diamond it's so flash) and I knew that we wouldn't be able to afford anything remotely approaching it and that mine would look a bit 'nothing' iykwim.

I had in mind choosing something that was relatively inexpensive but a bit different that I really liked.

what about a gorgeous eternity ring...you can get some really pretty ones, and you could wear it under your wedding band so there aren't any issues about it fitting against the engagement ring.

you could go for something different too, I have seen really pretty ones with different coloured stones

or get looking round the antiques if you want something a bit different to wear on right hand ring finger as a love ring

I didn't like mine. It was a tiny weeny spikey diamond solitaire that belonged to his Mum from her first marriage.

I only wore it for a couple of months then stopped. once we'd been together 6 years I said I wanted a proper one; so now have the most stunningly beautiful antique dianmond ring.

I reckon you should ask for an eternity ring or just go and buy a different one yourself.

I do like mine (we both chose it) but had we had a bit more cash at the time/had I seen the gorgeous ring I now quite want, I'd have gone for something different (mine is silver and was about 50 quid I think, so pretty but not suitable to wear all the time as silver tarnishes in water). DH says I should get a ring when I finish my studies ... I'd highly recommend finding something you want to memorialize and getting a ring for that. If you have a nice wedding ring, I think that's symbol enough of the marriage, isn't it? It's maybe nice to have a ring that means something else as well.

I don't like mine so I don't wear it. DH doesn't mind, he says we're not engaged any more so no need to wear it if I don't like the look of it.

Feel a bit better to know that I'm not the only one. DH likes it a lot which is meaningful because I know he put quite a lot of effort into choosing it. I feel a bit guilty / ungrateful I suppose but it's quite sad because he wants me to wear it all the time.

Your rings, your choice. Have them reset into something you do like. I did this with my rings. DH was a bit Hmm but he doesn't wear them. I love them now and don't regret it for a second.

I liked mine at the time but now wish we'd gone for something more interesting that the standard diamond solitaire.

I don't like mine. We were very skint at the time, and it was supposed to be a make do, until we get something nicer. 8 years later...still have it.

I've hinted at a replacement for our 10th anniversary.

Dh went and bought mine on his own. I don't wear it anymore as its not what I would have chosen - its a perfectly nice ring - diamond in platinum but I never really wanted a diamond. I wanted something more interesting - never told Dh though!

you are not the only one, my DH picked mine and I wore it for a few weeks -even got it resized- before I admitted it wasn't me. He was upset but we exchanged it for something I preferred but as we had to exchange it in the shop he bought it in I still had to compromise with what I got as they didn't have a huge selection. Still look at other people's rings and think they are nicer than mine. Part of my problem is that I got engaged during Ireland's " celtic tiger" when people were easily spending between ?4,000-?6,000 if not ?10,000 on a ring which is ridiculous, and although I would have hated for DP to have to borrow money for a ring I'm a bit envious of other people's ring which I feel bad about. He chose a solitaire but i chose a row of small diamonds as I knew I couldn't compete with other girls. I think it's really sad that there is so much emphasis on the ring and even though I know it's a symbol of love and my DH is fab I still would like a bigger one which is upsetting cos I know it's shallow and I know he would be so upset if he knew how I felt. I never even thought about rings til I got engaged and then it became a really big deal which is sad.

My mum didn't like the one my dad gave her but likes the one her ex fiancé gave her so she still wears it. Ouch.

Mine was alright, I loved it at the time because I was so in love with dh. But just before dd was born, he bought me another one, which I love, love, love, love. Mainly because it is three times the size of the original (modest) one Grin

I know a few people who do not like their rings and have made their DHs buy tham new ones after a few years so I made sure DH got me one I loved from the start. I still love it now and when I clean all the hand cream out from under the stone with my electric toothbrush it looks lovely. I had to have a wedding ring made to fit round it. Could that be an option, have your wedding ring fashioned round it somehow. Try not to compare it to your sisters. It is not nothing it is given to you with love from your DH. However if is it is really minging you could always lose it.
