Can anyone explain why you'd buy a nice new dress and then put a cardigan over it?

I don't get it. Some people have spent ££££ on dresses and then put an M&S cardi over the top.

I really need to know why people do this.

because they bought the dress last week when it was hot, they got up this morning and its cold!

Upper arm shame surely

Because no fuckers make dresses with sleeves any more. I have quite nice arms from a tonal point of view but they do sport a number of unsightly moles so sometimes a cardigan is only a courtesy to others.

I agree in principle though

It bugs me no end that there are so few dresses with sleeves. I prefer to wear more modest dresses anyway but have a horrible birthmark over my chest and one arm and prefer not to draw attention to it with a strappy dress. I do think it's a shame but if you don't want your arms totally exposed there is very little choice.

There is certainly a dearth of sleeved dresses- I never wear sleeveless anything, but I don't get buying a sleeveless dress and putting something over it.

You may as well stick a parka on.

And the fact that we brits have a love affair with the cardi. National costume dontcha know.

People just aren't trying hard enough

They are cold?

It is layering innit.

If you buy a beautiful short sleeve or sleeveless dress then you can out a layer over it and you are covered for cold or heat. Long sleeved dress and a hot day and you are a sweaty heap.

I have great arms for an old bag though and I would rather be cold than cover up a great frock.

Because for some incomprehensible reason, the makers of summer dresses overestimate the temperature over the country based on what it is in the south, sometimes.

If I wore sleeveless dresses and no cardi here in Scotland, I'd be miserable.

And that's without upper arm shame, which I also suffer from. Deep joy.

The Abbey must be a bit chilly. I'd rather be too warm than get cold.

But there are plenty of options aside from cardies to cover up.

Like what?
Shrugs are naff
Wraps fall off (and a good wrap is hard to find)
Jackets are sweaty when you get cold and boiling in the sun

But then better a really nice cardi than a shrug [bleeuur] or a pashmina [bleeeuuuurrrr]

Some woman earlier had a pink dress and some Victor Meldrew-esque beige overcoat on top, or at least that's what it looked like. Her hat was the same colour as the coat though so I rather suspect it was deliberate.

it is indeed the climate problem. put on nice dress in morning heat. cloud covers sun= cardigan needed
or air conditioning, or possibly people feel underdressed without in the abbey?

Shrugs are hideous unless you are under 8 years old or need something to go with your per una outfit.
