Can anyone explain why you'd buy a nice new dress and then put a cardigan over it?

I don't get it. Some people have spent ££££ on dresses and then put an M&S cardi over the top.

I really need to know why people do this.

per una practically requires a cardi...

I refuse to accept them.

This is going to kick off isn't it? Grin

Why don't people make dresses with sleeves? Most women aren't keen on showing their upper arms but most summer dresses are bleedin' sleeveless...doesn't make sense

Prunnhilda · 29/04/2011 10:17

Can I just rant as well about companies that do make dresses with sleeves, then cut the sleeves in the bigger sizes for arms which are clearly in proportion with a size 8? THey mock me.

TethersEnd · 29/04/2011 10:47

I feel a sleeved dress campaign coming on...

Cotton is priced very high now - maybe it saves money

womma · 29/04/2011 13:25

It means we will all buy a dress AND a jacket/cardigan, the scamsters!

alemci · 29/04/2011 13:37

I love cardis and will wear one over my dress at my mum's wedding in a month. will be a nice one though. can't stand jackets too uncomfortable.

My dress hasn't got proper sleeves either.

cruelladepoppins · 29/04/2011 14:04

Tethers I couldn't work out if you were being ironic about the "we need a sleeved dress campaign" thing, or if you had seen the Prima "Call to Arms" campaign?

TethersEnd · 29/04/2011 14:06

The what now? I was being serious- is there a real campaign?!?

OP posts:
cruelladepoppins · 29/04/2011 14:13

Yerss, there's been a real campaign by Prima magazine ... seems to be perhaps slowing down a little now, but they have been doing it since summer last year. here

It's bloody near impossible to buy a dress with sleeves , unless it is Biba inspired. I have a slim body ,but flabby arms and i NEED sleeves.

cruelladepoppins · 29/04/2011 14:19

There does seem to be a preponderance of sleeveless/ negigibly sleeved dresses.

I like John Lewis website because it lets you do a search for dresses based on sleeve length. It has 300+ dresses with 3/4 or full length sleeves, versus over 1000 which are sleeveless, short-sleeved or cap-sleeved.

Some might say, yes, it's practically summer. I say, "brrrr"! [frozen emoticon]

partyhats · 29/04/2011 14:20

I love cardigans, have hundreds of them in every style imaginable and wear one everyday even if it is boiling hot. In fact I think I am slightly obsessed with knitwear before cardigans it was beneton jumpers in every colour they made.

TethersEnd · 29/04/2011 14:20

Thanks for link Smile

Although I don't think it's only about covering up, I just think sleeves look so much nicer than a bleeding cardigan Grin

9am in a great big fuck off cathedral in a sleeveless frock? it must have been well parky. VB looked like she was shivering in that awful tent smock thing, never mind the guests in summer dresses...

TethersEnd · 29/04/2011 19:13

The get a dress with sleeves!!! Grin

exoticfruits · 30/04/2011 08:06

Have you tried buying a summer dress with sleeves? Not easy to get one with even short sleeves.

TethersEnd · 30/04/2011 10:53

Hence the campaign idea Wink

I think a dress stops being summery with a knitted item over the top.

Trans-seasonal darling. Nowt wrong with a cropped cashmere Cardigan. It's a very British thing.

polyhymnia · 30/04/2011 14:20

So glad to see so many other people want more dresses with sleeves. Sleeveless is no good for those of us whose upper arms are both untoned and mature.

Even plus size retailers - which I try to avoid if poss - have loads of sleeveless dresses. Plus size people can have toned arms, but not all do.

Unfortunately, I also hate cardis. They look frumpy on my ample bust. Though have now dipped my toe in the water and bought two tie front cardis and a long one-button one from Boden - which look and feel much better than I'd feared.

Problem still not solved though. The tie-front cardis are good for a street party but I wouldn't wear sleeveless and a cardi to a 'formal' occasion - would have to embark on a long and possibly fruitless search for a jacket, or just search out sleeves in first place!
