Do you keep your shoes/sandals clean on the inside?

my new fit flops are already a little dirty on the footbed after a couple of weeks and it got me wondering if other people clean their shoes on the inside. During the summer I notice that some peoples shoes will be almost perfectly clean on the inside whereas other people will kick of theirs and it's covered in black stuck on dirt.

What's the MN consensus?

English is my first language, although you'd never know it from that post.

isnt it a badge of honour to have Birkies with worn black innards?

KatieScarlett2833 · 19/04/2011 16:12

(Examines Birkies), that would be no, then.

sharbie · 19/04/2011 16:17

ewwwwwww sweaty feet

Paschaelina · 19/04/2011 16:26

Dh has pristine insoles, he also has no hard skin on his heels or ball of foot Envy just like a baby's in fact.
I have black sweaty marks on mine and very hard slightly cracked skin.

Correlation maybe?

cyb · 19/04/2011 16:37

My feet always get filthy in the summer when I wear sandals etc. I dread having to take my shoes off. Other people dont seem to ahve the same problem

LovelyDaffs · 19/04/2011 16:42

Cyb is right most other people don't seem to have the problem, which is why I wonder if everyone cleans them and somehow I missed this lesson. My mother however has foul feel that are black on the soles and her shoes are revolting.

I clean mine, I thought everyone did to "extend the life of their footwear"Smile. Garden to sandals and back makes the soles filthy.

I only go to the trouble of a bit of wet kitchen paper and fairy liquid however.

TheFarSide · 19/04/2011 17:00

I actually rinse my sandals under the tap if I've worn them all day. They dry overnight and are ready to wear the next day.

iWILLdothis · 19/04/2011 17:01

I had to scrub my fitflops this morning! New last year and was mortified every time I had to take them off last summer. Vowed this morning that I'd take better care of them this year. Mine have the creamy colour instep and I'm actually eyeing up the darker ones which wouldn't show up the grime as much! So you're not alone in this problem!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 19/04/2011 17:03

My fitflops are black, job done :o

fatsatsuma · 19/04/2011 17:04

If I wear closed-toe shoes (ie ballet pumps, converse etc) without socks in the summer, they go smelly very quickly Blush , and then I'm too embarassed to take them off in public - really tricky when going into people's houses. In the winter I don't have smelly feet or smelly footwear at all, honest.

Please tell me I'm not the only one Sad

TheProvincialLady · 19/04/2011 17:06

I am like your DH Pashaelina. Beautiful non smelly feet with no effort whatsoever. I never get black marks. If the rest of me was as gorgeous as my feet, I'd be famous for being gorgeous. Sadly, however...

moragbellingham · 19/04/2011 17:10

fatsuma - I was the same - until I realised I had a tiny bit of athlete's foot! One dose of lamisil once and my feet are non-smelly.

sharbie · 19/04/2011 17:34

wet wipes are the answer for feet and shoes have also done the tap thing

what can i do about dds fake uggs tho??

Meggles76 · 19/04/2011 17:48

I wipe sandals and flip flops with a baby wipe after I have worn them. Seems to do the trick.

LovelyDaffs · 19/04/2011 22:59

Ah ha I knew it, there are really people who clean them after each use. Phew it makes me feel a bit better tbh because I was beginning to wonder if I wasnt normal. So now I know that there are some people who have naturally clean odor free feet and others who don't, but clean their shoes and then people like me who just live with grubby shoes and mean to clean them but just dint get around to doing it.

I love MN you find out what goes on behind closed doors.

Fake Uggs need to go in a carrier bag and into the freezer overnight. Kills all the stink by killing the microbes (which scientifically I'm Hmm about...surely they are just suspended?). It does work though.

toddlerama · 20/04/2011 08:20

I put flip flops in the washing machine. Wouldn't feel that way about expensive fitflops though.

Never pumice your feet. Long term, it makes them worse. Thick moisturiser and socks in bed a couple of times a week keeps them nice. And don't walk around the garden barefoot. Often.

sharbie · 20/04/2011 10:55

cool Smile thanks toddler

leavesleaves · 20/04/2011 11:04

In New York during sandal season fussy girls carry baby wipes around so they can wipe the city grime off their feet during the day.

Also, you can use spray on antiperspirant on your feet which is particularly helpful if you are prone to blisters in hot sweaty weather -- dry skin doesn't blister.

Why does it so often seem that life is a matter of constant grooming?
