Esteemed Ladies of S&B.....I need your help like I've never needed it before.

My brother is getting married on Easter Weekend. It'll be a relatively small but very classy affair up in the wilds of Scotland.

I need an amazing dress.

My personal style is vintage/retro/wannabe pin-up. I would love a 40's or 50's inspired dress. I don't like the Vivien of Holloway dresses - they're too costumey for me.

I want something with some structure to it to flatter my figure. Must not be strapless. I love lace, sparkles, tulle. Colourwise I look best in strong colours. I don't want anything from Coast/Karen Millen/Monsoon and definitely not Debenhams.

This is pretty close to my dream money-no-object dress.

Also adore this

I am a size 14 and mostly hourglass (with spanx Wink). I have typically Irish colouring - long dark hair, pale skin and grey/blue eyes.

Budget is up to £200.

Anyone up for the challenge?? If you find me the right dress I will track you down and bestow you with gifts Grin.

HOF

Debenhams

people tree

Don't think any are right though but will keep my eyes peeled.

Sorelip · 01/03/2011 13:07

Have you ever visited dollydagger.co.uk? They have some nice 50s style dresses.

BunnyLebowski · 01/03/2011 13:11

Thanks Tracey Smile

House of Fraser one not awful but the colour would make me look like I'd been dug up Grin

Don't like the Debenhams one - as with most of their dresses I think it looks cheap and a bit tacky.

The People Tree one would be a lovely summer dress for hols but it isn't special enough iyswim.

Thanks sorelip - Yeah I have been on Dolly Dagger but as with Vivien of Holloway the dresses are a bit too costumey for me.

I'm a fussy mare aren't I?!

neckline too high?

reiss

BunnyLebowski · 01/03/2011 13:14

Wheels & Doll Baby one too short and neckline too high - wouldn't look great with my boobs.

Reiss one too boring and too black. Don't want black. Also don't like the curlywurly style straps.

i have never attempten to link before so hope this works!

any of these?

traceybath · 01/03/2011 13:17

farhi

TerrorFirmer · 01/03/2011 13:18

I don't think that many of the High Street have done 50's this season but Jaeger have this one. Simpler than your examples but I bet it's beautifully cut.

EdgarAleNPie · 01/03/2011 13:18

get cutie? likethis?

thumbwitch · 01/03/2011 13:18

Oh that red dress is lush... no good for my colouring but still.

pale blue, pick up the colour in your eyes

foundwanting · 01/03/2011 13:19

This?

This would be lovely in the dark blue.

BunnyLebowski · 01/03/2011 13:21

Thanks lovemyOJ - some lovely dresses on there but many are too VaVaVoom - I want to look pretty rather than overtly 'sexy'. I would quite like this one if it wasn't blue and wasn't made from satin. Satin is not my friend.

What do we think of this?

The Farhi one is really pretty tracey but not right for the occasion.

noddyholder · 01/03/2011 13:21

pretty

BunnyLebowski · 01/03/2011 13:24

Terror - cute but too short/neckline too high.

Edgar - I find the GetCutie ones a bit too gimmicky.

thumbwitch - I like that one. Very pretty!

foundwanting - really like that first one - it's gorgeous! Off to have a browse at that site!

Keep em coming ladies Grin

this range might throw up something for you
If you move away from the circle dresses there are some lovely fitted dresses, that look rather good on the hourglass figure.

Esmee · 01/03/2011 13:25

this?

ArfurBrain · 01/03/2011 13:26

i like the dollydagger but can't see how that isn't costumy but Viv of H isn't??
V of H is half the price....

(I am pissed off that 50s style is so high street, as it has been my summer style for years .)

Esmee · 01/03/2011 13:27

Ah sorry just read you preferred strong colours...

noddyholder · 01/03/2011 13:27

this

ShowOfHands · 01/03/2011 13:29

Lots of vintage style 50s esque dresses on ebay. Rockabilly and swing dress bring up good results.

For example.
