MIL getting remarried - need an outfit

TrillianAstra · 12/01/2011 12:00

April wedding so will need wrap/cardigan/jacket/shrug/something

No clue how dressed-up other people will be.

Would rather not spend £££.

Any thoughts?

5'7, size 10, dark hair, darkish skin for an English person, good arms/shoulders, smallish norks, not great legs (nothing calf-length please)

So it has to be full length then?

Are you more of a bright colour sort of person or the black/grey/silver type?

TrillianAstra · 12/01/2011 12:08

Full length or kneelength I guess - just not midcalf, no matter how good it looks in Mad Men.

Won't wear black to a wedding, just in case anyone is superstitious. :)

Was just about to post a link for a reduced (£100 to £30) full length dress (grey) from Debenhams but when previewing link before posting, someone must have ordered the last size 10! Aarrgh!

There are quite a few evening dresses on sale at Debenhams at the moment.

Will have another look around, bit bored at work at the moment (or just too lazy to find something work related to do Grin)

TrillianAstra · 12/01/2011 12:25

I'm at work too...

See the thing is I don't know if I want an eveningy evening dress. Should ask SIL if she has plans but knowing her she'll buy something v expensive full price the week before.

Is it me or does that waistline/neckline/angle make it look like her boobs are too far down her chest?

OP posts:
notinmypocket · 12/01/2011 13:40

I think the way she's standing is rather unfortunate plus she might have slightly droopy boobs?
Don't think the cut of the dress makes them go downhill

Is it too casual and/or not your style?

TrillianAstra · 12/01/2011 13:56

I'm not keen on the colour - from a distance it looks an unhealthy-poo colour. And if the model can look shapeless then what will I look like? Is the dress too big for her or something?

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 12/01/2011 13:58

Sorry, I'm sounding very critical. Thank you for looking for me :)

OP posts:
notinmypocket · 12/01/2011 14:04

Don't be sorry, am not expecting everyone to like the same things!
Plus without knowing you or your style it was hit or miss!

I quite like shapeless hippy dresses but tbh probably not for a wedding!

Bear

Anyone want to do some imaginary shopping?

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 21/01/2011 15:07

Come on - spring wedding, hotel type place, what shall I wear?

OP posts:
tethersend · 21/01/2011 18:44

Narrow it down a bit... maximum budget please.

Any colour no-nos?

Would you like sleeves?

How about something like:

this?

Or this?

Or this with a fur shrug?

TrillianAstra · 21/01/2011 19:18

I don't know until I see things - that's why I need you to throw stuff at me so I can look and then I discover what I like/don't like. Sorry, I am rubbish. I will probably sound really critical of everything too. Because I don't know what I want.

LKBennet dress too old for me I think and looks a bit shapeless.

Tibi Bahati weird shape. Reiss dress an even weirder shape - baggy top then gathered around the bum with a special seam up the bum crack?

Maybe I don't belong on S&B.

Have asked SIL. Doubt she will have any ideas. I could do with a level of smartness indicator. At least I know that there won't be a ban on Coast dresses or anything mad like that!

OP posts:
tethersend · 21/01/2011 19:24

No, this is good- I like the first dress but can't bear the second two.

You need to give feedback- what you hate is more useful than what you like, actually.

Would you like something more structured?

TrillianAstra · 21/01/2011 19:27

I quite like the look of Ramona here

I have a waist and would like to look approximately female human shaped, not weirdly baggy.

Not sure if petal dress is nice or too bridesmaidy.

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 21/01/2011 19:28

I think strapless will be too dressy. Maxi could be nice but would have to be balanced between not too beachy not too eveningy.

OP posts:
tethersend · 21/01/2011 19:48

Was thinking of this but it's out of stock- right lines?

I do not like the ramona (not a fan of hitched hemlines) and think the petal dress is nice but doesn't rock my world.

TrillianAstra · 21/01/2011 20:29

I like the low back on that, that's nice. A-line rather than pencil skirty also good.

OP posts:
tethersend · 22/01/2011 14:01

Would you like something fifties style?

TrillianAstra · 22/01/2011 18:04

Ooooh, have never seen ASOS marketplace before.

Er, maybe 50s style. Not that pink though.

OP posts:
tethersend · 22/01/2011 18:12

I'll be honest- I can't get a handle on what you want. I don't think you want 50s style.

I suppose it's because you're a size 10- if I were a size 10, I would dress differently to I think. So. Tell me your best features. And your top-whack budget. I will start afresh.

TrillianAstra · 22/01/2011 18:15

I think I might need to wait til closer to the time. It's not until April.

I will think again when it is more like spring and I feel spring-ish.

OP posts:
Tillyscoutsmum · 22/01/2011 18:17
