Bought an epilator today....ouch

Anybody out there have experience of these? please tell me it doesn't hurt like that every time?

No, no it doesn't!!! Don't worry - the first time is definitely the worst, and it does get better. The hair grows back finer so it gets less and less painful.

It's really worth persevering with - I've had mine for threee years now, and love it. So much more in control than when I was a slave to waxing appts!

It also hurts more on longer hair so it's worth using the shaver head to trim down to short length.

Good luck - hope you grow to love your epilator the way I love mine!

What brand do you have diambardiva? I'm sick of waxing appointments but dont ever want to shave again. But they are not el-cheapo either...

Oh, and the best thing is definitely how much slower and finer the hair grows back. I've noticed a real reduction...and I am a dark, hairy lady!

Also I find it such a relief to be "in control" of my hair removal. You can have a quick "hoover" from time to time when you fancy instead of having to look like a gorilla until your monthly waxing.

I have the braun silk epil 3 and it hurts a tiny bit but not bad.
What one do you have?

I have a Braun Silk-epil. It was £50 (a few years ago), so only the cost of two professional waxes.

Hmmm I'm sold, have just been reading reviews on Amazon. Seems to be about £20 cheaper on Amazon than the one I saw in Boots the other day. I think I'm going to be buying one of these very soon...

The first time is the worst. It gets easier and less painful the more you do it as the hair gets finer and the roots get weaker.

I can now do my legs and underarms without even flinching.

After a shower or bath is best when the pores are open.

Yes, as everyone else says, gets far less painful to the point that it's just a stingy fuzzy feeling that is completely bearable.

Make sure you exfoliate (shower puff is fine) and cream regularly to avoid pesky ingrown hairs.

See I wax, and that kinda hurts but doesn't, if that makes sense, I suspect this "hurts but doesn't" as well, if that makes sense.

I've already got the fluffy weak regrowth from waxing for years and years so I dont think I will even suffer like a proper Virgin.

Can't wait to get me one of these! Dont mind waxing but making the phonecall then attending the appointment seems to be a major logistical nightmare with 2 young children so end up foresty half the time (though it doesn't really look it, to be fair, these days, its pretty sparse)

Hmm I got one last summer and it was fab but am really struggling with ingrowing hairs now, despite exfoliating. Is there anything I can do????? I now have several of the raised red bumps on my legs, looks really great.....

Clenchedbottom i used an epilator for about a year - first few momths great, then started to get lots of ingrowing hairs despite exfoliating. I had to stop as my legs looked awful. It took quite a few months for the bumps and scars to go. I have had waxing in the past and only the occasional ingrown hair. I just shave now!

No idea if it gets better....first time I used it, it drew BLOOD!....last time i ever used it believe me!!

I've been using mine for years and I love it.
You need to exfoliate often, but that's not hard if you use the gloves.
I'd never go back to waxing-More cost and the same result.
It's not sore of you carry on, you do get used to it.

I am a real pain wimp and am managing with an exfoliator. I have one that you can use in water so used in it bath for first few times and it was ok.
How slowly do you have to do it though? The hair seems to grow back really quickly - is that because I'm doing it too fast?

Hi all, thanks for your replies. Its the first ever time Ive tried anything other than shaving my legs so I guess they were bound to be sensitive.

I did what the instructions said and bathed first and exfoliated. I seem to remember that somebody once told me the first time you have your legs waxed it wont feel as smooth because you have hairs of all different lengths and some will grow back quickly.

So do I do it again in a few days or do I wait now for a good few weeks? How often do you do it when its established?
It says in the booklet that it can be up to four weeks?!

Impulse buy yesterday at Sainsburys £60 down to £29.99. Always fancied trying it and got a little frustrated as we dont have a shower in our house so its a bath only for me. I'm 39+3 wks with DC2 and cant reach my legs in bath to shave them so something had to give!!!

I once epilated my bikini line. Could only do one side before I gave up, weeping! Prefered to be wonky than go through that again!

Yeah, bikini line is hardcore.

Can't help on your ingrowing problem - never had it (apart from a couple on my horny old kneecaps, but I can live with that).

I've started doing my bikini line. I've started with the very extremities and am working my way further and further in as I go along. The hairs right on the egde are so fine now that they don't hurt.

Not tried underneath though Not sure I dare!

If i got one i would mainly want it for 'underneath' - so if anyone does it there regularly i would be very interested in feedback!
