Help!!!! Wedding outfit needed urgently

Matlow · 06/01/2011 15:20

I am going to an old friends wedding in 2 weeks time and desperately need help with the outfit. I will see lots of old college friends that I haven't seen for ages and really want to look ok. Since having children I have put loads of weight on and feel embarrassed having to face people I haven't seen since I was thin. I am 5ft 10 and a size 16/18. I am in proportion (big all over!). I would rather not wear a skirt or dress so ideally a trouser suit. I would love to look stylish and money is not really an object. However if I am spending a fortune it would be nice to get something that I could wear again.

If any of your fashionistas could help me out I would be really grateful. I should also point out that I am happier than I have ever been and have a wonderful partner and 2 gorgeous children and wouldn't change a thing. I just want to look stylish for this xxxxxxx wedding!

Im well aware that Im like a dog with a bone here (!) but loving this and the suggested accessories are fab. Would def add a faux fur cape for a winter wedding www.net-a-porter.com/product/103093

BecauseItoldYouSo · 07/01/2011 20:07

Have to agree with Gillybobs that Halston Jumpsuit would be stunning on a more voluptous lady!

BecauseItoldYouSo · 07/01/2011 20:27

Or how about this it covers the upper part of the arms

Matlow · 07/01/2011 21:55

The Halston Jumpsuit looks great but not sure about my bottom illumnated by shiny material and might be a step too far, the austin reed is probably more likely. What do you mean by faux fur cape? Any examples.

Thanks for underwear idea, that's in the bag! The shoes look amazing but would probably kill me even if I could actually walk in them (which I doubt).

I like the Asos jumpsuit except for the bare back bit, I think my wobbly sides would preoccupy me too much.

I think I will order the VW red dress and see if the length works for me and check out other possibilities at the same time. If I ended up with the dress could anyone suggest a coat, bag and shoes to go with it?

I appreciate I am a bit of a hopeless case but very grateful for suggestions and feeling a lot more optimistic. Thanks!

Gillybobs · 07/01/2011 22:18

sorry, try again [http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10001_10001_087010350660_-1?breadcrumb=Home~txtblack+fur+cape+]

Gillybobs · 07/01/2011 22:19

sorry cant get that to work, go on to debenhams.com and search for black fur cape

tethersend · 07/01/2011 22:57

Hooray! I don't think you'll regret it. Although, if you don't feel like a million dollars in it, send it back.

I assume you'd wear black opaques with it?

I would wear this and simple black patent pumps or black suede platforms also here

tethersend · 07/01/2011 23:00

Gilly, put two brackets around the link like this

Is it this one? That would look good too.

Gillybobs · 07/01/2011 23:01

thats the one! Thanks Tether. I think it would be something you'd keep in your wardrobe for years

Matlow · 07/01/2011 23:09

Oh my word! I read simple pumps and thought " Thank goodness" then looked at them!!! I guess I'm not going to get away that lightly. Was hoping the cape might be a bit longer like the scottish widows ad!

Only if you want to look like an extra from Harry Potter! : )

tethersend · 07/01/2011 23:15

Sorry! Wrong link for the simple pumps Grin

Try again

Matlow · 07/01/2011 23:24

Ha Ha Harry Potter! Those shoes are amazing but I'm not sure I would wear them enough to justify the eye watering price, love the style and height though.

I will sleep on it, thank you so much ladies!

OP posts:
tethersend · 07/01/2011 23:35

Cheaper and black suede

Matlow · 08/01/2011 11:00

Nice shoes, thank you. Would they go with both dress or jumpsuit?

OP posts:
tethersend · 08/01/2011 11:44

Hmm, would probably go a bit higher with a jumpsuit.

petitdonkey · 08/01/2011 13:09

[http://www.lkbennett.com/shoes/courts/CCSALUT2002PATENT low heel]] or maybe you could look for a shoeboot? Yay on trying the VW - am very tempted by it myself!

petitdonkey · 08/01/2011 13:15

sorry

Matlow · 08/01/2011 21:15

The LK Bennett shoes are lovely. If the red Vivienne Westwood dress covers my horrid knees would it be appropriate to wear a longer smart black coat over it in the church which I would take off at the reception? If yes, has anyone any nice coat suggestions?

petitdonkey · 09/01/2011 09:00

what about a [http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Biba+Belted+fit+and+flare+Mac/141628923,default,pd.html black mac]] ?? I bought one a while ago on a whim and have worn it so much for going out etc.
I would then finish it off with a bright scarf like [http://www.lilyandlionel.com/item.php?id=323&stylenumber=SC2064 this]] or [http://www.hobbs.co.uk/index.cfm?page=1153&showall=true this]], maybe red gloves?? Get your hair blow dried and make your make-up immaculate and you will look so elegant and put-together that no-one will be commenting on your thighs!!

By the way, get the underwear before you try the dress on!!! That dress will also work in the spring/summer with bare legs or sheer tights and nude shoes.

petitdonkey · 09/01/2011 09:02

sorry
really should

Thank you all so much, I am going to get on with trying to get hold of these items. All those that have responded have been unbelievably helpful! I was completely lost and at least now have options.

Since my first child was born 7 years ago I have never once even looked at this section of Mumsnet and now I am hooked! Thanks again.

This coat would also look nice.

yy to blow-dried hair and scarf.

You know you'll never leave now, right? Grin
