Foundation advice. Recommendations and can I return one?

Hi All,

I packed up DD (6wks) and headed to Boots today determined to treat myself to some decent foundation...having been pregnant all yr my skin has been really changeable so I have been holding off.

As it is I found myself being really indecisive and faltering at paying premium prices...before spending £8 on a Boujois one. Now I am kicking myself because I have put it on and it is irritating my skin, so it might have been cheap but it was a false economy as I don't think I can wear it!

So I have two questions:

  • Is there any chance I can return an opened foundation to Boots as I think I'm allergic to it? Or should I just write this off and chalk it up to experience?
  • Can anyone recommend a good one to go for? I'm happy to pay premium prices for something good. I have pretty good skin so don't need anything really heavy, need to even skin tone as much as anything, quite pale, tending towards dry not greasy and prefer the natural look where poss.

Thank you!

mineral make-up- just discovered it and it's amazing. I use number 7, which is 15 quid, and i know elizabeth arden and bare minerals do one for just over the twenty quid mark, but number 7 is brilliant! my skin has been changeable too- my DS is 6 months, but i swear it is so natural, perfect coverage in less than a minute! i have good skin, but since trying this i am a foundation convert- it doesn't feel like makeup and it covers up the fact i'm still getting up for night feeds. just a sweep of this and i look healthy and glowing. and it doesn't block pores. when i've used liquid foundaions- no matter how expensive- they cause breakouts/ buy some now!

clarins instant smooth here is brilliant
I have tried loads and have loads of different ones, lancome, chanel, dior, bobbi brown, no 7 and this is the easiest and quickest to put on. Last ages and is the only one that I get compliments about my skin.

brimfull · 27/09/2010 19:08

yes to returning one
you have valid reason

BoysAreLikeDogs · 27/09/2010 19:10

if you order bare escentuals mineral foundation (which is v v good indeed)from QVC then you get a 30 day no quibble money back guarantee - even if you open, use half, you don't like it, send it back

c0rns1lk · 27/09/2010 19:13

can also get bobbi brown from QVC

VivaLeBeaver · 27/09/2010 19:13

Nope you can't take opened foundation back, I don't think they should accept it for hygeine reasons?

I use MAC studio tech and find that to be very good. Try a tester next time if you have sensitive skin.

Flog your other one on ebay.

Boots are usually pretty good about returns in my experience

Themasterandmargaritas · 27/09/2010 19:15

I'm a convert to mineral foundation too, living in the tropics a liquid foundation is a no no. It also seems more 'natural' to me. I recommend Lily Lolo. You also need to buy a good brush.

cyb · 27/09/2010 19:17

Hi TMand M. How goes it?

brimfull · 27/09/2010 19:20

laura mercier mineral foundation is heaps better than bare escentuals ime

c0rns1lk · 27/09/2010 19:21

agree ggirl
bare escentuals is a tad glittery

Themasterandmargaritas · 27/09/2010 19:21

Hi cyb, doing well thanks, hows you?

Themasterandmargaritas · 27/09/2010 19:23

Plus you can't possibly buy something that isn't spelt properly. Ridiculous.

puzzlepetal · 27/09/2010 20:02

I like Bourjois foundation, the "looks like you have have a good sleep one" is actually very good.

MrsC2010 · 27/09/2010 20:19

Thanks all, sounds like I should have a browse of QVC then! I get so frustrated with myself, I end up wasting so much money on 'cheap' things when I really ought to spend a little more and get the right thing first time round.

BB tinted moisturising balm the one in the jar.
Very light and looks like you're not wearing foundation. I like it for daytime.

MrsC2010 · 28/09/2010 09:04

Cool, well I'll try my luck on the refund today! You can't really see the reaction apart from my skin texture looks a bit rougher, but it still feels itchy and sensitive even after being washed, showered etc etc. That's all I can think it is, too much of a coincidence otherwise. Angry

Did you return it? Just had something similar happen to me with rimmmel 16 hour foundation, my skin is in bits. Really upset:(

I like YSL perfect touch foundation. It's dewy without being shiny so you don't have to wear powder over it. It has a built in application brush (like a massive touche eclat).

LaraJade · 02/10/2010 10:09

Clinique Almost Perfect spf 15 - just apply with fingers and blend. Like tinted moisturiser; gives skin a nice glow.
Boots take back anything that has caused a problem; i've returned 2 products and got full refund.

bluebump · 02/10/2010 10:12

I use Clinique Superbalanced and it is brilliant, I have often tried to buy cheaper foundations to save spending all that money but it's not worth it.

I do like Lily Lolo too, the mineral powder foundation.

Bucharest · 02/10/2010 10:14

I'm with ggirl and have an instantly smooth face Grin

I've tried Clinique in the past but their formulations are too drying for me.
