Help me with face primers (to use instead of, rather than under, foundation?)

I've finished my lovely Clarins beauty balm flash (it was about 3years old, used v sparingley, a christmas present from dh Blush Grin

So, i need to replace it and clarins is a bit above my budget

i don't tend to wear a lot of make up so have found the beauty flash balm was nice to wear instead of foundation. So, I've seen the new loreal primer advertised, and is there one by GOSH too?

Has any one used any of them or any others that they can recommend?

Am on a bit if a budget so when i buy one i want to get the right one! Thanks ladies!

Philosophy The Present Clear Makeup is the business (you can buy it from, ahem QVC, if you don't have stockists near you - think it's about 21 quid) - great under make-up but leaves your skin matte and more refined even if you don't apply any make-up.

yousaidit · 23/09/2010 22:34

I live near Leeds so can get prety much any brand coz there's Harvey Nics and other stores. Would never have thought of looking at Philosophy.. does it suit any skin type?

Thanks for the suggestion btw

I've been using the Benefit primer after accompanying my MIL to a make up lesson/session at their counter. I use it in conjunction with a tinted moisturiser and it makes me look almost human Grin - very pleasing effect, and what the lesson showed me was that less is definately more, and i am now hardly ever using foundation - just feels too heavy.

superv1xen · 24/09/2010 10:11

either the loreal studio secrets one in a round jar, or the avon Magix one (i slightly prefer the avon one as it is also SPF 20 and i am obsessed careful about protecting my skin)

moragbellingham · 24/09/2010 16:32

L'Oreal one is good but I would use it under foundation as it's quite dulling to the complexion.

YSL Teinte perfection I wear on it's own and love it.

sue52 · 24/09/2010 16:43

I use the GOSH one under tinted moisturiser.

Faaamily · 24/09/2010 16:57

I use the Nars one.

It smells lovely, is SPF 20 and helps foundation go on really smoothly. I mix it with a cheapo foundation to make a tinted moisturiser, actually Smile

You have to pay for an advert.

I have been using the smashbox one. it is very good

southeastastra · 24/09/2010 19:17

i like smashbox too, try to get some samples to try

vespasian · 24/09/2010 19:18

Sorry I misunderstood I use it under foundation.

Arbonne you apologised for breaking the rules and then advertised again.

TraceyArbonne · 25/09/2010 01:10

Vespasian, if you wouldn't mind taking a look at some of the other posts in the thread (e.g. Scuttlebutter, Faaamily, moragbellingham, mavornia) they are recommending their preferred products and saying why they like them. You personally recommended Smashbox. This is called network marketing or "word of mouth" referrals. I recommended Arbonne's primer and gave the reasons why I like it, just like the posts above. Nowhere in my post did I say how to get hold of these products. So quite how you classed my post as 'advertising' and not the others bemuses me! (By the way, I won't be logging back onto this thread so leaving a reply is futile!)

yousaidit · 25/09/2010 20:37

Thank you everyone.. are there any of the above that might seem more suited to paler skin that can be a bit blotchy at , ahem, certain times f the month?

How lazy am I? I'm even asking you to help me make a shortlist! Grin

the smashox one i use just makes make up go on so much better, but i use it with the skin illuminator if i want to sparkle a bit (like you do) Grin am pale too

dingdong3 · 25/09/2010 21:18

I have used a few of them and my favourite is still Estee Lauder. Go to the EL counter and ask to try them-there are three different types of primer.

I know you may think Shock at the price but per gram, it's cheaper than the L'Oreal one, which IMO is nowhere near as good.

Can't remember the details on the EL one as I foolishly bought the Laura Mercier one last time and am still waiting to finish it...too ££££ to not finish but it's really not as good as the EL IMO. I remember thinking with the EL one that I would have almost gone without make-up but I defo can't say that about the others.

www.johnlewis.com/102246/Style.aspx

This is the best primer I have ever used, I don't wear foundation or concealer at all and use it to even out the shine and reduce any redness from old acne scarring or sensitivity.

It is expensive but a pumpful covers the whole face and the my current bottle has lasted a year used regularly.

It has a lovely sheen to it that helps your skin to glow, lots of people have asked me what I'm wearing and converted to it too.

If it is too expensive, I know that the big department stores do 10 - 25% off days on the run up to xmas and so it might be cheaper then?

If you don't want to spend as much, the bobbi brown and mac ones are supposed to be very good too.

yousaidit · 26/09/2010 20:27

The estee lauder loook interesting..

Brik, your link isn't working and I can't work out from the jl website which one you're recommending?

RipMacWinkle · 26/09/2010 20:50

I'm interested in this too so am checking out all of the links. Currently using the Loreal one under mineral makeup but finding it a bit greasy on my skin.

btw, yousaidit Brik's link takes you to a product called Guerlain Météorites - Base Perfectrice Pearls, 30ml for £40. HTH

Bishoplyn · 26/09/2010 21:12

Hiya! I like this one. I can often pick it up cheaply in an Outlet Store close to where I live.

Bishoplyn · 26/09/2010 21:15

This one is good as well. You can sometimes get it cheaply from QVC

BrikSchittHawse · 26/09/2010 22:07

"Try this now"

moragbellingham · 26/09/2010 22:25

Bishoplyn - I'm not able to get Prescriptives in any form here which is a shame as I loved their traceless range.

And found out yesterday that the YSL teinte parfait stuff is now discontinued.

Bishoplyn · 26/09/2010 22:40

Hi,Morag. I live in Northern Ireland - sorry to confuse you with my American link Confused

Here is where I get the Prescriptives primer.
