Real Fur & Astrakan Advertising on Mumsnet

CommonSenseSuze · 19/09/2010 00:15

On another thread there's a discussion about whether the clothing company La Fille Unique goes against the Mumsnet campaign about letting 'girls be girls' and not be portrayed in an 'adult' light.

I thought it was worth also highlighting the fact that this company appears to be selling products which have real animal fur on them: www.la-fille-unique.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=fur

They also sell an astrakan coat (astrakan is generally made of aborted lamb foetuses).

Not nice things to dress our children in! Angry

I've contacted Mumsnet to ask them to sever ties with this terribly unethical company. Please do the same??? :)

Please help! :)

Actually, the fur is made from the wool of lambs less then 10 days old. Not aborted/terminated.

Ewe · 19/09/2010 09:07

I have to say I don't necessarily see why taking money from a business like this is a problem, Mumsnet also link to sites selling leather and meat to eat.

They will probably stop advertising anyway when they realise nobody is buying anything from them and they only had the high traffic due to one thread, pretty much nobody here has an interest in buying that kinda stuff.

It's only advert, don't click and don't buy it. Don't think it is anything to do with LGBG campaign to be honest.

GypsyMoth · 19/09/2010 09:12

oh fgs!!!

when will all this silliness end??? get a grip!! we are adults and buy what we like!!!!

Alouiseg · 19/09/2010 09:12

I removed myself from Sheer Luxe mailing list a couple of days ago when they were pushing previewing Matthew Williamsons AW10 fur range, I was incensed.

While I eat meat and wear leather there is something so unpleasant about the fur trade and I do think that it's very different. It's more about cruelty than sustenance.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 19/09/2010 09:26

Wiki indicates that both newborn and fetal lamb pelts are usedhere

ugh

I agree that MN ought not to be associated with the fur trade

oh, Suze, as it's a Sunday you may not get a speedy response from MNHQ

CommonSenseSuze · 19/09/2010 10:51

Ewe, nothing to do with the LGBG campaign - just mentioning the other thread.

dragonfly, yes, let's "get a grip" and not give a damn about any suffering - it's for fashion after all. Hmm

I've just received some messages from other MN members with their support. Please post on the thread too, if you can. Thanks!

Morning all. And thanks for your comments - we'll take a look at this.

CommonSenseSuze: you have mail!

CommonSenseSuze · 19/09/2010 10:56

Howtheserenity, how do you know that the astrakan sold by this company isn't from aborted lambs?

Bear in mind that lambs are killed, not sheared, for astrakan.

poor mnhq... the company isn't advertising its furs on our pages... some people like to look hard in order to take offence.

PacificDogwood · 19/09/2010 11:04

What Aitch said.

CommonSenseSuze · 19/09/2010 11:26

HelenMumsnet, I don't seem to have mail...

OP posts:
HelenMumsnet · 19/09/2010 11:31

Oops, sorry, CommonSenseSuze Blush I thought it was you who'd mailed us earlier - but it was someone else. Many apols

HowsTheSerenity · 19/09/2010 12:45

I don't. But I did an assignment on this for a subject at uni. It is not financially viable to kill the lambs in utero. There is too much risk to the mother sheep. They do kill them as soon as they are born though.
I do not like it any more then you. I do not agree with it but I see no difference between these coats and leather shoes, sausages or jelly. If it was en endangered species then....

Maryqueenofchocs · 19/09/2010 19:05

was there not a thread recently on AIBU about a lent astrakan coat....if i'd known the above I would have given very different advice....ie, fgs give the foul thing back..Grin

BoojaB · 19/09/2010 19:44

That is vile. Yes, commonsensesuze, I wholeheartedly agree with you! :(

Mumsnet HQ please stop carrying advertising for La Fille Unique immediately! In fact, do you have a policy against promoting companies that sell real fur?

Astrakhan is utterly hideous. There's absolutely no excuse for killing animals for their fur. Angry

Aitch · 19/09/2010 19:46

oh for god's SAKE.

nameymcnamechange · 19/09/2010 19:47

Sorry, mnhq, I really don't like this. The little models in makeup doesn't sit comfortably with me either.

BoojaB · 19/09/2010 19:50

Aitch why post on this thread if you're not interested? For god's SAKE.

Aitch · 19/09/2010 20:04

because i am interested. i just think you are being ridiculous.

katerum · 19/09/2010 20:09

another vote here for common sense!

Aitch · 19/09/2010 20:11

do you mean common sense or commonsense? because they are not necessarily one and the same.

ohfuschia · 19/09/2010 20:11

That is repulsive, I agree with commonsensesuze, grim grim grim.

BoojaB · 19/09/2010 20:13

Aitch, why are you interested?

Aitch · 19/09/2010 20:15

sorry, don't understand the question. if you mean why am i interested in a bunch of handwringing princesses demanding that a business get rid of an advert for a company that WHEN YOU GO INTO THE LINK AND SEARCH turns out to sell something that is not illegal then i refer you to my earlier posts.
