Real Fur & Astrakan Advertising on Mumsnet

CommonSenseSuze · 19/09/2010 00:15

On another thread there's a discussion about whether the clothing company La Fille Unique goes against the Mumsnet campaign about letting 'girls be girls' and not be portrayed in an 'adult' light.

I thought it was worth also highlighting the fact that this company appears to be selling products which have real animal fur on them: www.la-fille-unique.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=fur

They also sell an astrakan coat (astrakan is generally made of aborted lamb foetuses).

Not nice things to dress our children in! Angry

I've contacted Mumsnet to ask them to sever ties with this terribly unethical company. Please do the same??? :)

hmm you see Aitch has a point

the line was drawn (wrt Nestle)

discussion about various companies' advertising, yes

demanding withdrawal unilaterally without thinking through isshoos, no

BoojaB · 19/09/2010 21:20

Who's not thinking through the issues?

Fur trade = insane cruelty. 'Nuff said!

It's not as if this is revolutionary thinking. The majority of shops in the UK have a fur-free policy including every single department store except Harrods. It's not exactly rocking the boat to expect a ban on advertising companies which sell fur.

katerum · 19/09/2010 21:24

AYE!

pastaplease · 19/09/2010 21:26

Well said, Bojab. Next stop Harrods then is it?!

I'm glad that commonsensesuze started this discussion but it's made me so sad to have a look online at how fur is 'produced'. It really is awful. I can't understand why anyone would want to hurt animals like this. It should be illegal all over the world!

CommonSenseSuze · 19/09/2010 21:30

Don't worry, as soon as I've heard back from Mumsnet HQ I'll let you know what they say.

I can't see that it would bother anyone if they decided not to advertise companies selling real fur.

:)

It would be illegal re. domestic animals.

people are waking up though, we dont see much fur these days now folk are better informed.

its primitive, and unnecssasary in places like the UK.

CommonSenseSuze · 20/09/2010 23:13

There's a Facebook group dedicated to boycotting La Fille Unique because of the sale of fur!

I'm going to join!

Still haven't heard anything from Mumsnet HQ on the matter...

I wear rabbit and really can't see how it differs from my leather boots....

paisleyleaf · 20/09/2010 23:26

Aren't they the company that asked us to upload pictures of our DDs onto their website recently?

CommonSenseSuze · 20/09/2010 23:30

On their Facebook page they ask for photos I think.

Yes, I'd love a picture of my DD next to an astrakan coat made of lamb foetuses!

I am with Aitch.

If MN refuse advertisers because of objections by a few posters then they will soon have no advertisers left. And without advertisers, no MN.

They have to draw the line someplace.

I don't like fur coats and would not buy one but do not see the problem with this ad.

CommonSenseSuze · 20/09/2010 23:32

I hardly think they'd have no advertisers left! It's proper that they should listen to their members views.

OP posts:
MmeLindt · 20/09/2010 23:36

Yes. And they do listen. But it has to be a majority of the mnetters who object.

How about they ban this company and animal libbers then say that they should not take ads from companies who sell leather. Or test on animals. Or use gelatine in their products.

CommonSenseSuze · 20/09/2010 23:38

It's not uncommon for companies to have a ban on advertisers which sell fur. Many of the big fashion mags do, for example. As someone said previously all the UK department stores have fur-free policies except Harrods.

It'd be odd for Mumsnet not to drop this advertiser on the grounds that they sell real animal fur.

Good news!

La Fille Unique has now decided to take out a fur-free policy!

I'm surprised that I didn't hear from Mumsnet though - not one email. Disappointing.
