so, have long boots with heels over skinny jeans really had their day?

This comes after reading another thread about boots.

I have just bought some black knee high boots with a low (2") heel. Amazingly they fit over my chunky calves Grin. Even more amazingly they come in a size 9 so I can actually wear socks with them (double Grin)

Tried them on with skinny jeans and and a knitted tunic, it looks fab. Tried them on with skinny jeans and my swingy wool coat, it looks fab.

Just in case my mum is reading: they are actually very practical as they will stop the bottoms of my jeans getting wet when I'm doing the school run. Oh, and they were a bargain, reduced from £70 to £30.

Bearing in mind that I live in the sticks, where people aren't that fashion concious, will I get away with them? Or will everyone point and laugh...

is everyone too busy pointing and laughing...?

Ah, you'll be fine- the look has been 'out' a while, but you can work a 70s mum look by tucking jeans into boots and that's is so hot right now Grin In reality, it is a look that will endure.

If you feel great in them and they look good, why worry?

miche8 · 17/08/2010 16:33

i dont think the look is 'on trend' but your be fine, just dont stand near any 20 somethings.

domesticsluttery · 17/08/2010 16:43

70yr old mum, now there's a look I could work...

Oh sorry, you said 70s...

They do look nice, and a lot of people here wore them last winter. We're more M&S than Missoni in these parts Grin

Oh dear i had no idea it was out ... so what's in then for mid thirty year olds with limited budgets ?

domesticsluttery · 17/08/2010 16:49

This mid thirty year old with a limited budget will probably be wearing the aforementioned knee high boots with skinnies.

I think flat and mid calf is more "on trend". It isn't a look which suits me though.

OP posts:
Celery · 17/08/2010 17:26

Flat or mid-calf with what though? Still with skinnies, or with something else? Help! I'm not fussed about being "on trend", but I don't want to look totally out-dated either.

miche8 · 17/08/2010 17:27

I'm certain its calf/mid calf boots this year and fairly flat.

Biker boots are on trend but i know dp will laugh at me.

traceybath · 17/08/2010 18:05

Sorry probably me that said its a bit liz macdonald Grin

I think flat or flattish knee highs are ok but think heeled just look a bit odd now. But hey - thats just my opinion.

Heeled knee-highs look good with the midi full skirts that are in all the glossies this month though.

domesticsluttery · 17/08/2010 19:04

There is still much tucking in of jeans into heeled boots going on at Next though, which is where most of the mums at the school gate shop, so I'll probably be seen as a style icon.

I'm not keen on midi skirts either, they remind me of 1980s school teachers! But then I remember swearing that I would never wear skinny jeans and that soon changed...

OP posts:
Celery · 17/08/2010 19:11

Midi skirts? Is that calf length? Meh.

I can do calf length flat boots. Was just unsure as to whether it was now totally uncool to wear skinnies with them, and if not skinnies, then what?

I love my Top Shop Martha's with converse, but need boots for warmth in the winter. Martha's and Biker boots (jeans on the outside)?

partyhats · 17/08/2010 19:59

Its not the height of fashion but you can get away with it. Heeled boots would look good with the full mid length skirts around this winter. I will be wearing mid calf boots with skinnies. I am also on the lookout for a nice pair of ankle boots too to wear with skinnies, wondering if Ican get away with something like this. would prefer leather though.

domesticsluttery · 17/08/2010 20:04

Mine are similar to this but not quite as expensive...

I don't think I've ever been the height of fashion. I think if you live in a rural area you stand out a lot more than in a city if you slavishly follow trends.

I just aim to look reasonably presentable!

So what boots should we be wearing with skinny jeans? (With link please, as I can't keep up with boot style terminology)

howdidthishappenthen · 17/08/2010 20:14

Oh no! This is my absolutely staple look for winter. With flat boots, mind. Does this make a difference? It's cut throat cutting-edge fashion around here, so pls, don't be kind if I 'need to be told'..

Caz10 · 17/08/2010 20:21

Ooh where do you live howdidthishappen?!!

It seems a shame to put biker boots under something...are they not allowed to be on the outside?

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 17/08/2010 20:25

Never liked this one, though did do it a bit. Bit principal boy for my liking.

howdidthishappenthen · 17/08/2010 20:58

Midway between Kings Rd and Brompton Road in central London. Even a trip to the newsagent for milk is a catwalk here. Normally I quite like it, but now I'm worried that for all of winter 09/10 I was committing a terrible fashion faux-pas.. (although not very worried, admittedly. I do have other things on my agenda..)

LetThemEatCake · 17/08/2010 21:50

cor, I wish I lived in a part of London that was claws-out fashion conscious. I don't have nearly enough places to wear my outfits, not without odd looks anyhow.

tethersend · 17/08/2010 23:22

Don't worry howdid, you'll be fine on that side of London... Aren't they still wearing upturned collars and bootcut jeans over there? Wink

I live in uber trendy east London and it's a bloody minefield Grin

aquavit · 18/08/2010 12:21

Jess Cartner-Morley nailed (last Sept) why long boots and skinnies look a bit passe.

Also, I think you are right about principal boy, gherkin, but it's also a pitfall of the high-ankle/low-calf boot with leggings or opaques, isn't it? - especially if the top half is a tunic-like dress.

I am so glad I live in a town where all you really need to worry about is not dressing in the manner of one of the student tribes...

domesticsluttery · 18/08/2010 12:39

Passe for Jess Cartner-Morley 12 months ago is probably the equivalent of just coming into fashion now in the sleepy rural village where I live Wink

Excellent, if anyone points and laughs I shall just tell them I'm channeling high end fashion (in high street bargains) Grin
