I want to buy my wife underwear

It's our wedding anniversary next week and I would like to buy my wife underwear. I have no idea where to start. Can I buy online, I don't really want to go into a shop.

I know what bra size she is but have no idea where to start and how I manage to risk not getting it horribly wrong (too sensible vs too slutty).

She is always on here so I reckon you lot could give me a shove in the right direction.

Go for soft and sensual fabrics, nothing with nasty itchy embellishments. Steer clear of black and red, or purple and black combinations. Don hardhat. :)

ethelina · 10/08/2010 21:26

I would take her shopping if I were you. She gets to choose exactly what she likes and knows you will like. You can treat her to lunch afterwards.

Brownie points all round. Wink

DuelingFanjo · 10/08/2010 21:32

Don't get thongs! Unless she's really into that kind of thing.

Does she like fancy underwear?

yousaidit · 10/08/2010 21:35

What Katy did next or kiss me deadly, trendy retro stuff, if black is too vampy nude stuff is nice, could get knicks, metal clasp suspender belt and a sheer cami top?

CheapHawaiian · 10/08/2010 21:36

Check the size in her current underwear, and the brand of her favourite. Then go to a department store and ask an 'older lady' for help. They are experts at this and you won't be made to feel out of place.

And keep the receipts - just in case.

BertieBasset · 10/08/2010 21:36

La Senza do lovely stuff, not slutty, well not very slutty Wink but then I like red/black/purple combinations so may be best not to listen to me.

Have a look at her fav underwear and that should give you an idea of the style to go for. Just avoid anything with bits cut out

CHOOGIRL · 10/08/2010 21:39

Sorry fruitstick I think anniversary+underwear = marmite. Could go either way - love or hate.

I personally would prefer to buy my own underwear, but I am not Mrs Fruitstick and you asked for advice on where to go, so I would suggest here

You need to go rummaging in her knicker drawer. You need to know sizes for both bras and knickers, and check what style of knickers she goes for for her 'good pants' (not the every day stuff).

What's your budget?

fruitstick · 10/08/2010 21:41

yousaidit - i'm not sure I'm that brave. that looks like advanced underwear buying to me.

Agent Provocateur is the way forward

CheapHawaiian · 10/08/2010 21:45

try this

MissInterpret · 10/08/2010 21:45

DH got me Elle MacPherson as a surprise and they were great. Comfy and sexy.

Think ethelina might be onto something - take her with you? I'd like that. Would spice up the anticipation of wearing them later!

angelfire · 10/08/2010 21:48

Rigby and Peller
Agent Provocatuer
or
The Dressing Room if you live near Bath

oooh I love some of the stuff they do in marks and spencers but then I like bright colours

maybe take her with you otherwise raid her underwear drawer and washing basket and write down the size of the stuff she actually wears (if anyone looked in my drawer there's several different sizes so check the stuff you know she wears) and the colour of any other stuff she has that she's bought herself so you know what kind of colours she likes. some women like red/purple and black and some don't.

Gay40 · 10/08/2010 21:58

I wouldn't even bother buying her underwear. Cliched, stereotypical and boring.
There's got to be something better, sorry.

isthatporridgeinyourhair · 10/08/2010 22:02

Does she really want underwear? What about something more original?

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 10/08/2010 22:03

My DH has only only on a couple of occasions given me underear and got it compeltely wrong. I think he did the "she's about your size" thing to the shop assistant who I suspect was a willowy size 10!!!

So be very afraid when you give it!!!! And do make sure it is returnable!!!

But, I agree with itsonly, lunch and jewellry, which is what I went for last year!!

Ronaldinhio · 10/08/2010 22:08

some nice cos underwear in the style section of the s times this weekend

cruelladepoppins · 10/08/2010 23:32

What ethelina said.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/08/2010 23:40

jewellery much better IMO

PurpleKate · 11/08/2010 00:07

Please don't buy her underwear, unless its her idea.

May be it's just me, but underwear or clothes or jewelry would never appear on my top 5 (or even 10) best anniversary or birthday presents.

What would appear are:

  1. Spending the day together as a couple - with child care already organised.
  2. Something I have already said I would like (if only I could justify spending that amount of money on myself!)
  3. Something beautifully wrapped - posh paper, ribbons, etc. - by his own fair hands.
  4. Lots of small (possibly inexpensive) presents- I love opening lots of pressies.
  5. Something that shows he's put a lot of thought into it. Best pressie I ever had was a rocking chair - because he thought I would like to sit and rock our newborn baby while I was feeding her - it was such a lovely thing to get me - make me all emotional just thinking of it now.

Now your missus may really be into posh undies, jewelry or designer clothing, in which case ignore my ramblings!

HTH

FellatioNelson · 11/08/2010 08:04

You are brave OP.Confused Buying underwear is destined to go tits up, if you'll pardon the pun. Besides, bras are notoriously difficult to get right, even if you know the exact size it's no guarantee it will fit properly. If underwear is really what you want to get then take her for surprise shopping trip and choose together, and give her the chance to try on and show you. somewhere like Rigby and Peller at Bluewater?

Jewelsandgems · 11/08/2010 08:29

I agree op. I would not want underwear bought for me, but would like something I had said I really liked. For example, I lost my cherished monte blanc pen a few years ago and if there was a present I wanted, it would be a replacement.

Or even something little from tiffany.

Or a beautiful new winter coat (no expense spared)
