Whoops NEXT

Last autumn/winter they had some really nice stuff. It was the first time in my life I'd ever bought myself stuff in Next. Also bought some nice cropped jeans there this summer. Looked at the autumn stuff online and it is horrific. Cheap looking, mumsy, 'orrible.

Fimbo · 27/07/2010 10:20

It's been down the pan for years. It was fine in the 80's and yes I did queue up for the sale then but the quality was better. Preferred the shops back then too as they were much smaller.

domesticsluttery · 27/07/2010 10:21

I had my A/W directory delivered over the weekend, and I haven't found anything much that I like. I used to buy lots from there, both for me and the kids

This is the first time in about 10 years that I haven't bought a single item in their sale too.

nomorebooze · 27/07/2010 10:24

Thought over the last several yrs i was getting old! i personally think its getting worse!!!!!!!! glad its not just me

TheCrackFox · 27/07/2010 10:24

It was good 20 yrs ago. But now, it just seems to be badly made, badly cut, over priced tat.

DarrellRivers · 27/07/2010 10:25

I agree with Fimbo, it went down the pan in the early 1990s

Whoamireally · 27/07/2010 10:26

Yep, thought it had gone down the pan years ago for womens' clothing (altho' I am sitting here in a pair of Next cropped jeans from last year but only because I can't get into anything else ). Sizing very very strange on me,sometimes need to order 2 sizes bigger than I technically am. Cannot get my head round why people queue up at 5am for the sales, personally find it all aimed at mid-level office workers. Great if you want a black and white striped pussy bow blouse and a polyester pencil skirt with a fishtail back, not if you want anything nice.

I do like some of the little girl's bits though - pretty and quirky, good attention to detailing, and wash well. Having said that, there are very very few of DD1's 'Next' bits that have lasted well enough for me to keep them for DD2.

sue52 · 27/07/2010 10:44

Agree it was good for awhile in the 80s but has gone to pot now. Very frumpy and boring.

LouMacca · 27/07/2010 10:54

Agree. I popped in a couple of days after the sale started for a browse, I wouldn't entertain buying anyting even with 50% off.

Also when you do see the odd nice thing in there everyone else is wearing it! Think I have bought 2 items from Next over the last two years.

SerendipityAlways · 27/07/2010 10:59

Also have you noticed that a lot of their clothes are sized strangely/inconsistenly,
I have 3 pairs of next shorts, in size 8, 10 and 12!! and I haven't changed sizes in the last 10 years!! Also their clothes tend to become very baggy after just a couple of wears. I bought a pair of "faux linen" shorts there in early July and they have become too baggy to wear after the first wear - was thinking of going back and complaining but might be too late now. Just poor quality generally and so frumpy too!

pagwatch · 27/07/2010 11:03

Next went down the pan in about 1990.
It has been shit for a whole generation. There are young women who have never lived in an era of decent Next clothing, their memories are sadly filled with the shite, badly cut crap that they parade every season.
It's tragic

mrsflux · 27/07/2010 12:03

dh bought some of their work trousers last month.
one wash later and they bobbled all over! this was the machine washable ones so not my fault!

kids stuff is ok but some of it is very chavvy. i'm not keen on dressing a toddler like a tiny teenager!

treedelivery · 27/07/2010 12:07

Completely agree with pagwatch. As usual.

The childrens tops are like tissue paper. I got some from Frugi and couldn't believe both fabrics could be described as cotton. Lots of the girls clothes look like teenage clothes that have been downsized. Not nice.

The womens clothes are odd. There will be 2 or 3 nice things, and the whole of your town will be wearing them.

traceybath · 27/07/2010 12:23

Well there is the odd nice thing but you do have to look quite hard.

AlaskaNebraska · 27/07/2010 12:45

normally YES
but this season a LOT better
LOVE the black wool shorts in tehre and some of the shoes are COOL

MrsBadger · 27/07/2010 13:11

the only good thing is that their 'little girl' stuff now goes up to age 6

androbbob · 27/07/2010 13:23

Used to buy most styff from there, now only get the odd top for the kids and only if reasonable value. Prices are excessive for quality of clothing and agree that if you see a nice top you then see 10 other people wearing it!

Now I need to know where else to shop instead!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/07/2010 13:28

Next is vile, has been for as long as I've been buying my own clothes, so approaching 20 years.

AlaskaNebraska · 27/07/2010 13:45

haha well have just ordered the firs adult things there for about 2 years
one being these boys

stressheaderic · 27/07/2010 13:51

I've just cancelled my Directory after 5 years. Haven't seen much I've liked at all for a while. Their little girls stuff is nice but fades in the wash something terrible. Prefer Mini Mode at Boots.

harassedinhants · 27/07/2010 13:52

I agree with Fimbo, it did used to be great in the 80's, but these days I think it's distinctly average and expensive for what it is. I also find the young girls clothes (dd is 4) are really grown up for the age.

I'd never queue for the jumble sale although did pop in and got a nice a pair of shoes half price. They have the nice odd bit, and I occasionally buy jeans there, but on the whole it's not for me.

ninah · 27/07/2010 13:57

never liked next stuff and haven't seen anything to change my mind
miss selfridge was my 80s mecca

HavingAnOffDAy · 27/07/2010 13:58

I haven't bought anything in there for ages. The clothes seem to be a mixture of slutty and middle aged. I like to think I'm neither (on a good day anyway )

Used to buy stuff for my DD in their sale when she was 'baby' sizes but lately the colours & quality seem just as rubbish for the kids stuff as they are for adults.

I did buy some tea towels in there last week though

deaddei · 27/07/2010 14:41

I preordered about 6 weeks ago from the a/w preview catalogue, as it was 15% off.
And have sent everything back, bar school trousers for ds.
The sizing has changed- normally a 14 bottom and all trousers were big. And I haven't lost weight (if only)

I buy jeans as have long legs, but generally v. disappointing.
