I really need to stop smoking. I've stopped every time I've been pregnant, so I clearly have the willpower somewhere, but I can't now.!

I smoke at least 18/22 fags a day the smell makes me feel sick, the taste. I've read Allen Carr's no smoking book but here I am.

I'm desperate to do it this January the 1st and give up for good I'm planning to do it cold turkey like last time, however the one thing I hate is the anxiety and cold sweats I get when I get to around day 1/2.
I can't sleep I feel almost like I'm having an hours long panic attack it's awful.

Anyone want to join?

Me please, I will join you. Long time lurker on mumsnet not much of a poster. Really want to give up the fags. Have smoked for a long time and like you OP have managed to stop while pregnant so i know i can do it. So fed up with the taste, smell, the way they make me feel and the wasted money🙄. I smoke around 7/10 a day and im very predictable in my timing. Im sitting here now after being outside for one and the smell of me is horrendous. I know how bad they are for me so now is the time.
I can see the damage on my skin especially around my eyes, im hoping in time the puffiness will reduce, i also have a wheeze which is only going to get worse.

Going cold Turkey but will need lots of support.
Goodluck x

SassenachWitch · 30/12/2020 23:14

I’ll join you. Have also managed to stop for 2 pregnancies, so I know it can be done.

I haven’t set a date yet, as whenever I do, I feel too much pressure and fail 🙄 so it won’t be January 1st, but definitely within the next 2 weeks.

I’m thinking of vaping, I don’t think I can go cold turkey.

Good luck both

peakygal · 30/12/2020 23:14

For weeks I've had myself all psyched up to quit Jan 1st but now I feel I don't have it in me. I'm not a very heavy smoker but I want to quit. I don't enjoy it anymore so feel that should be the big kick I need to quit. Best of luck to you all 🤞

OppsUpsSide · 30/12/2020 23:16

Me!
Also stopped for pregnancies, but then started again.
Allan Carr worked for me for about a year, then I started again.
Have had enough now, my DC are old enough to know and hate it.

Iwantmynameback · 30/12/2020 23:23

Goodluck to everyone, I have read the Allen Carr book aswell ages ago but it went in one ear and out the other...maybe i just wasnt ready. My DC are old enough aswell to know but I never smoke in the house . Its going to be extra hard with new lockdowns (im not in UK) coming into effect. Not going to be going into work either with new restrictions so i know i will be struggling with all that and feeling the pressure. I will enjoy my last few tomorrow eve.

MarbleTrack2 · 30/12/2020 23:38

Me too!
Been planning to stop for quite some time - stopped for pregnancy as well - so know I can do it
Figured 2021 must become a better year than 2020 and don't want to start the new year as a smoker

Glad I found this thread 🙂

ParkheadParadise · 30/12/2020 23:59

Good luck everyone

I smoked 20/30 a day for years and years. I didn't want to give up.
My DH hated it and was always trying to get me to stop. I smoked through my pregnancy with dd2, although I didn't find out until I was 5months then I suffered a bereavement so I kept on smoking
A random text from the doctor about quitting smoking changed my life.
I used the patches and mints. The first couple of weeks were brutal. I actually cried on several occasions because I missed smoking🤣. As the weeks went on it got easier (never kept a packet in the house) I started walking with a friend. I never walked anywhere before. After 3 months we were walking 6miles every day.
I'm 4 years smoke-free now and so much healthier. I can smell someone smoking a mile off and it stinks😂
If I can do it, anyone can.

Timeforabigchange · 31/12/2020 00:37

So glad I've found this thread!

I've been feeling like an absolutely terrible person! I've managed to quit a couple of times before for a year or two but always end up going back to it. I quit when I was pregnant for almost a year but started again last month due to stress of baby's health and isolation (I know, not helpful).

She's now 4 months and I feel so guilty every time I go outside for one so I'm done. Finished my last one tonight and I'm not buying any more.

Good luck to everyone ☺️

sobsanta · 31/12/2020 00:41

I'm joining you but I started this evening. Finished my pouch of tobacco and opted to switch to the vape pen I've had laying around here since my last failed attempt (three months cigarette free in 2019). I am around three hours in on the vape and not struggling quite yet. I'm a heavy smoker - think 40/50 rollies a day. It's ruining my health and bank balance.

Time for a change.

stoneysongs · 31/12/2020 16:52

Me 🙋‍♀️
I stopped yesterday as I'd finished a packet so currently 26 hrs in. Already feel like my breathing is easier but I do want to kill everyone (poor DH) 😬

I have smoked on and off for years, this time I started again in September having stopped for a year or so before that. I have two preachy teenagers who would be extremely pissed off if they found out I have been smoking, and I'm fed up of stressing about them finding out. Plus I can only smoke for a few weeks and then I really start feeling it physically. I think the first 72 hours are key so fingers crossed 🤞

Immediate challenges are drinking tonight and again on a family zoom tomorrow. Especially tomorrow because the kids tend to leave us to it on our regular family zooms and I usually pop out for several cigarettes through the evening.

pinkpetal2 · 31/12/2020 19:37

Hi everyone I've downloaded the app and I'm ready at midnight to stop I'm nervous about it already it's not going well just yet 😂.

@singingstones Well done you how are you feeling now about it? Any big symptoms? For me it was the anxiety. Couldn't sleep at all.

@Timeforabigchange I feel the same too I hate picking up my baby knowing when he's snuggling in me I must stink of bloody fags!

@ParkheadParadise I so hope I can get to that level 4 years must be bliss and I bet you've saved loads too.

@MarbleTrack2 @OppsUpsSide @SassenachWitch
@Iwantmynameback Right if we can give up a hole 9 months we can bloody do it again. God give us strength first though Grin

OP posts:
stoneysongs · 31/12/2020 20:08

@pinkpetal2
I feel a bit tired and a bit tearful. I have stayed in my pyjamas today so that it's more of a faff to get to the shop. That did work when I had a wobble just now, it gave me time to think about what I was doing. I've kept to myself mostly today because I am so irritable. But this is all temporary and the most important thing is I haven't smoked. 30 hrs done. The temptation to cave in is very strong though! I keep thinking it's no big deal if I just smoke tonight and tomorrow night and then stop "properly".

SassenachWitch · 31/12/2020 20:16

Is anyone planning on saving the money they’d usually spend on fags? As in, still taking it from your purse/bank and putting it aside.

I smoke quite expensive ones, so could potentially put aside £12.50 a day without noticing.

I’m thinking at the end of each month, I can reward myself using some of the £375 I’ve saved, maybe half on me and half in my savings account.

I’m actually quite embarrassed to admit I waste nearly £400 a month on bloody smoking!

ParkheadParadise · 31/12/2020 20:42

@pinkpetal2
I did save a fortune. I went clothes shopping on a regular basis, although I did put weight on, to begin with.
It's weird because it's 4 years and I hate the smell of smoke BUT I still get the occasional craving for a fag

Timeforabigchange · 31/12/2020 20:58

@singingstones well done for making it through today. I had my last one last night so now on 21 hours. I've had a few bits to do today but avoided all shops. I just keep thinking if I cave tonight then I've got to do the first day all over again. The hardest part is nearly over!

ParkheadParadise · 31/12/2020 21:07

Well done @Timeforabigchange and @singingstones
After the first couple of days, it will get easier.

stoneysongs · 31/12/2020 21:13

@Timeforabigchange
Well done, we've got this 💪
Hoping to be asleep fairly soon and then I should be at 40+hrs when I wake up 🤞
(Thinking about having to go through the first bit again definitely helps, plus I have been snacking rather enthusiastically 😳, so I know I'll feel doubly shit if I give in now.)

Timeforabigchange · 31/12/2020 21:24

@singingstones we have so got this! I always find the first 48 hours the hardest so you'll be pretty much there.

I've been snacking a lot today too. I can see myself piling on the pounds (on top of existing baby weight).

stoneysongs · 31/12/2020 21:43

@Timeforabigchange
I always excuse the snacking as the lesser of two evils and if it helps me to give up smoking then it's worth it and I'll worry about losing weight another day. Which is all fine as long as I do stay off the fags! I will try to snack a bit less tomorrow.

Good luck to @pinkpetal2 and everyone else starting tonight or already started, how's it going for you, @sobsanta?

Ticklytoes · 01/01/2021 13:34

I’m in, I’ve needed to join this club for years!
4 hours down.

Doublechins · 01/01/2021 14:08

Ooh can I join too? So I started smoking 22 years ago at a very young age. Have stopped for 4 pregnancies and also switched to vaping twice for about 3 months each time so I know I've got it in me.

I had planned on going back to the vape but I didn't get to the vape shop before tier 4 closed it 😞

Had to have a covid test this morning so we are self isolating until I get the results (possibly longer). I have 3 fags left and can't go to the shop for more so I think I'm just going to go cold turkey. I do have vape liquid in the Cupboard if I struggle though but not any I really like or with much nicotine in.

Good luck everyone

TreeFella · 01/01/2021 14:21

This thread has come at just the right time for me! I've stopped as of a few days ago, deliberately not thinking about how long it's been in an effort not to make a big deal about it!

I really enjoy smoking and its definitely a stress relief for me... I will struggle. I'm giving up for the health benefits and because of the smell. I want to be able to walk up my street, or even a flight of stairs ffs, without getting out of breath.

I've gone cold turkey. Can't cut down, I won't stick to it! My boiler broke last night and I was so tempted to go to the shop for some baccy but I didn't. I do feel a bit proud of that! I've been smoking for almost 30 years, gave up for pregnancies but always went back.

Good luck to us all.

Timeforabigchange · 03/01/2021 00:35

How's everyone doing so far?

Iwantmynameback · 04/01/2021 12:40

I have to admit I'm really struggling today, im feeling stressed, weather is cold and icy and we are stuck at home due to more covid restrictions. DH went back to work today and my kids are being really good. I keep telling myself that smoking wont make the ueasy feeling im having about covid go away..it won't make the world any better. I will do another 5mins small steps. Sorry for the doom and gloom. Hope everyone is doing ok.

SassenachWitch · 04/01/2021 13:55

I haven’t quit yet Blush

My vape is on charge at home, I did buy cigs on the way into work this morning.

Do I cut down or go straight to the vape? I’m undecided.

Good luck everyone.

@Iwantmynameback you’re doing great Flowers
